I See A Cat and See Me Run, two books written and illustrated by Paul Meisel, received the Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Award from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association.

My 6 year old is struggling to read and so our weekly trips to the library have been searching for appropriate books for beginners. I can't tell you how many books we have picked up that our a "level 1" and there are so many words that he struggles with. I really loved the repetition of this book. He was able to sound out words he didn't know and there were a bunch of words he already knew. It made him motivated to read it over and over again and really built up his confidence. He also loved this crocodile that appeared on every page and would giggle pointing him out. I can't wait to read the other book See Me Run by Paul Meisel.

In another wonderful early reader by Paul Meisel, See Me Dig, a group of dogs likes to dig everywhere. But digging everywhere makes everyone mad! Especially the treasure chest full of ghosts. This is an amusing read for beginning readers age 4 - 7 who are starting to sound out more difficult sight words.

Following in the footsteps of his success with See Me Run, Meisel creates another great book about our great four legged companions ~ the dog. A large group of dogs are digging holes all around the forest. The other animals are mad and run the dogs to the sandy beach. Observant readers will see hints of foreshadowing in the illustrations. As the dogs dig they begin to uncover a treasure chest. When the treasure chest has been completely uncovered and opened, the dogs are scared away from the gold inside by the ghosts of pirates who have been protecting the hidden bounty. As the dogs run away, one stops and decides to be brave in order to scare the ghosts away. Again, observant readers will see the dog is not really the one scaring the ghosts away, but large excavatar behind him. Who also likes to dig. A fun read for lovers of dogs, pirates, and construction machinery. Theme associated with this title include the following: animal (fiction), early readers, and humor.

This title is recommended for first grade, but can be appropriate for children who are reading at an advanced level. It is leveled at a D based on the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading Level and focuses on reading standards for Literature and Foundational Skills in the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for kindergarten through second grade.

This sequel to See Me Run shows the canines enthusiastically digging in the forest. Their enthusiasm is met with irritation by the other woodland animals as the dogs have dug up their habitats. So, they turn their attention to a beach, where again they enthusiastically dig. Their fervent excavating unearths a treasure chest that houses, not treasure, but pirate ghosts that start to chase the dogs. The canine leader takes over and sends the pirates packing. Then they see another digger, an excavator, and happily dig alongside it. The plot is great fun and the artwork captures the actions and personalities of the canines perfectly. The detailed illustrations, coupled with easy text and short sentences, make this an ideal choice for beginning readers. It’s a must for school libraries.

My four-year-old son picked this book out from the library earlier this week.

This is an Easy Reader book all dressed up as a picture book -- That causes some confusion. We treated this book as a picture book, i.e., me reading it to a not-quite-reader, and we got a bit caught off-guard, not so much with the text, but with the illustrations.

The text, while obviously of the Easy Reader variety, is fine, if repetitive. My problem with this book was that the illustrations were clearly intended for someone older than my son. He did not like the scary pirate ghosts -- he probably will in a year or two -- but they were just a bit much for him now.

Several cheerful but determined dogs, obviously well-loved family pets, love digging. But the animals who live in the woods where they are digging are not so pleased. Nor are the pirates whose spirits inhabit a treasure chest along the beach. After one dog bravely chases them away, the canines find a machinethat likes to dig even more than they do. Fun to read aloud, this title will make young readers smile, especially at its ending. The pen and ink, acrylic, pencil, and watercolor illustrations show the great clumps of dirt flying from the dogs' paws as they do what comes naturally to them.

Cute illustrations accompany the simple text about a group of dogs that loves to dig! Digging can lead to trouble, though. When the dogs dig up some buried treasure that belongs to some long-ago pirates, they stir up the pirate ghosts. Simple text paired with more detailed illustrations will help the youngest of readers to read this book and enjoy the story. Dogs, pirates, and ghosts will appeal to many readers!

Many of us can relate to the irritation of a digging dog (myself included). This story is a fun and easy read that will have even the grouchiest digging dog owner laughing right along with the adventures these digging dogs find along the way. Bright and colorful pen and kink, acrylic, and watercolor illustrations detail the adventures and will have young readers laughing all the way!

Great book for beginning readers, especially if those readers like dogs. My Kindergartner liked reading this book. It was just enough above his level to be challenging, but not so hard that he got frustrated. It helps that the illustrations are very engaging and that my son thought the book was funny.
