The energetic dogs from Geisel Award Honor Book See Me Run are back in another adventure in this Guided Reading Level D book. These dogs like to dig—and dig—and dig! But when their digging disturbs gophers, racoons, and an angry bear, they have to run! The beach is a new place to dig, but what could be in that treasure chest. . . ? Pirate's treasure? No . . . it's full of pirate ghosts, and they have to run away again! Finally, the dogs find a new spot—and something that likes to dig as much as they do. Bright, cartoonish illustrations bring this story to life, full of energy and action—adding detail and humor to the simple text to support the story. This cast of mischievous dogs is sure to win your heart as they play in the dirt and chase each other through the pages of this early reader. The award-winning I Like to Read series focuses on guided reading levels A through G, based upon Fountas and Pinnell standards. I See A Cat and See Me Run, two books written and illustrated by Paul Meisel, received the Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Award from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association. Potty training can be a challenge. YOU POOP HERE by Paul Meisel can help lessen a child's fear of using a potty: Elephants poop in the grass. Fish and alligator poop in the water. Where do you poop (and pee)? In the potty of course. In a starred review SLJ said about You Poop Here: "An excellent first purchase for anyone looking to expand their potty learning collection, and an ideal complement to Taro Gomi’s classic Everyone Poops." Paul Meisel is also the author/illustrator of My Awesome Summer by P. Mantis (Holiday House Publishers) which was named by the AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prizes as a 2018 finalist for best books of the year in the Children's Science Picture Books category. My Happy Year by E. Bluebird (about Eastern Bluebirds) and My Stinky Summer by S. Bug (about brown marmorated stink bugs) are two other books in this Nature Diary series. Other books that Paul Meisel wrote and illustrated are: See Me Dig, See Me Play, Anna And Samia, and Good Night, Bat! Good Morning, Squirrel!
My 6 year old is struggling to read and so our weekly trips to the library have been searching for appropriate books for beginners. I can't tell you how many books we have picked up that our a "level 1" and there are so many words that he struggles with. I really loved the repetition of this book. He was able to sound out words he didn't know and there were a bunch of words he already knew. It made him motivated to read it over and over again and really built up his confidence. He also loved this crocodile that appeared on every page and would giggle pointing him out. I can't wait to read the other book See Me Run by Paul Meisel.
In another wonderful early reader by Paul Meisel, See Me Dig, a group of dogs likes to dig everywhere. But digging everywhere makes everyone mad! Especially the treasure chest full of ghosts. This is an amusing read for beginning readers age 4 - 7 who are starting to sound out more difficult sight words.
So silly and sweet. Makes those early reading times bearable with its humor and illustrations. Mr. Meisel also makes my daughter feel more grown up with because there is a plot to this one. Thank you.
This is a delight! Such simple text, but major plot twists and turns. A plethora of exciting illustrations of dogs, bears, pirate ghosts, AND construction equipment makes this super appealing for the very beginning reader. Highly recommended for ages 4-7.
Dogs, grumpy bears, a sneaking alligator, ghost pirates, buried treasure, and an excavator. It's the perfect book for new readers and mischief-makers. Paul Meisel's books are popular in our house because the stories are action-packed and the illustrations are funny.
A fun & easy read book about dogs digging. When my sons first started reading I looked for interesting and easy readers to help them love to read. This is really easy with short sight words and an engaging story for early readers.
This is a fun book for early readers, especially since it has a fun story line and easy words. Dogs like to dig, but their digging isn't always appreciated. Cute story and illustrations.
Another good early reader book with predictable text and illustrations that support reading. The page with the ghosts might not be what all families will support.
Following in the footsteps of his success with See Me Run, Meisel creates another great book about our great four legged companions ~ the dog. A large group of dogs are digging holes all around the forest. The other animals are mad and run the dogs to the sandy beach. Observant readers will see hints of foreshadowing in the illustrations. As the dogs dig they begin to uncover a treasure chest. When the treasure chest has been completely uncovered and opened, the dogs are scared away from the gold inside by the ghosts of pirates who have been protecting the hidden bounty. As the dogs run away, one stops and decides to be brave in order to scare the ghosts away. Again, observant readers will see the dog is not really the one scaring the ghosts away, but large excavatar behind him. Who also likes to dig. A fun read for lovers of dogs, pirates, and construction machinery. Theme associated with this title include the following: animal (fiction), early readers, and humor.
This title is recommended for first grade, but can be appropriate for children who are reading at an advanced level. It is leveled at a D based on the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading Level and focuses on reading standards for Literature and Foundational Skills in the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for kindergarten through second grade.
“See Me Dig,” is a companion volume to “See Me Run,” a Geisel Award Honor Book. Beginning readers will enjoy this easy-to-read story of a group of dogs that love to dig, following the dogs’ antics throughout a mischievous, fun-filled day.
A group of happy dogs dig holes in the forest and are driven away by the animals that live there. Next they dig up a pirate treasure chest, only to be chased by pirate ghosts! What trouble will the dogs get into next? (And who will be the next to chase them away?)
The simple plot and spare text, combined with humorous and colorful drawings of the dogs’ antics, make this a story that new readers will return to over and over again. In other words, beginning readers will “dig” this picture book.
This sequel to See Me Run shows the canines enthusiastically digging in the forest. Their enthusiasm is met with irritation by the other woodland animals as the dogs have dug up their habitats. So, they turn their attention to a beach, where again they enthusiastically dig. Their fervent excavating unearths a treasure chest that houses, not treasure, but pirate ghosts that start to chase the dogs. The canine leader takes over and sends the pirates packing. Then they see another digger, an excavator, and happily dig alongside it. The plot is great fun and the artwork captures the actions and personalities of the canines perfectly. The detailed illustrations, coupled with easy text and short sentences, make this an ideal choice for beginning readers. It’s a must for school libraries.
My four-year-old son picked this book out from the library earlier this week.
This is an Easy Reader book all dressed up as a picture book -- That causes some confusion. We treated this book as a picture book, i.e., me reading it to a not-quite-reader, and we got a bit caught off-guard, not so much with the text, but with the illustrations.
The text, while obviously of the Easy Reader variety, is fine, if repetitive. My problem with this book was that the illustrations were clearly intended for someone older than my son. He did not like the scary pirate ghosts -- he probably will in a year or two -- but they were just a bit much for him now.
Several cheerful but determined dogs, obviously well-loved family pets, love digging. But the animals who live in the woods where they are digging are not so pleased. Nor are the pirates whose spirits inhabit a treasure chest along the beach. After one dog bravely chases them away, the canines find a machinethat likes to dig even more than they do. Fun to read aloud, this title will make young readers smile, especially at its ending. The pen and ink, acrylic, pencil, and watercolor illustrations show the great clumps of dirt flying from the dogs' paws as they do what comes naturally to them.
Cute illustrations accompany the simple text about a group of dogs that loves to dig! Digging can lead to trouble, though. When the dogs dig up some buried treasure that belongs to some long-ago pirates, they stir up the pirate ghosts. Simple text paired with more detailed illustrations will help the youngest of readers to read this book and enjoy the story. Dogs, pirates, and ghosts will appeal to many readers!
Many of us can relate to the irritation of a digging dog (myself included). This story is a fun and easy read that will have even the grouchiest digging dog owner laughing right along with the adventures these digging dogs find along the way. Bright and colorful pen and kink, acrylic, and watercolor illustrations detail the adventures and will have young readers laughing all the way!
Great book for beginning readers, especially if those readers like dogs. My Kindergartner liked reading this book. It was just enough above his level to be challenging, but not so hard that he got frustrated. It helps that the illustrations are very engaging and that my son thought the book was funny.
a bunch of scruffy dogs go digging - and get the bears angry. They run away and... find a better place to dig. What's this? Buried treasure - uh oh! it's pirate ghosts! They run away and.... find their voice.
Super cute early reader. Totally made me want to sit both my dogs down and force them to listen to this hilarious cautionary tale ("Yes, Finn, if you don't stop digging up the backyard, ghost pirates will chase you!!")
