Sunflower Callahan was born to a Quechan Indian woman and her Irish husband. When she was 20, she was away from the house hoping to have a vision about the direction her life was to take. She went back home when she realized that it wasn't going to happen that particular day. She arrived home to find her mother raped and shot. Her older brother had been murdered and drug into their garden. Her father and eldest brother were away from home searching for gold. She buried her mother and brother then headed out the next morning to find the men who had murdered her family. She could tell that there were two men. She was hungry and smelled food cooking. Cole Fremont was wounded but caught her sneaking too close to his campfire. Sunny thought that she had found one of the murderers when she noticed Cole limping but she was surprised at his kindness once he discovered she was a woman. Cole hated Indians because they had tortured and murdered his younger brother. He was upset at himself because he was attracted to Sunny even though she was an Indian. She caught him off-guard the next day and using his gun, forced him to remove his pants so she could see the wound on his leg. She was surprised to see the injury was a bite rather than a stab wound and knew he wasn't the killer. They wrestled for the gun and he ended up on top of her and kissed her. They were distracted and didn't hear a man come upon them. He tied them up with intentions of raping Sunny but she distracted him and got to Cole's gun. It went off when the were fighting over it and the man ended up dead. Sunny was sick over it and Cole held her until she regained control over herself. They continued traveling together heading for Cole's ranch. Sunny was told that Cole's injury was from his being bitten by a Gila monster. Meanwhile, her brother, Sean, had a nightmare of his family being killed and told Patrick, his father. They returned home to find the graves and a note from Sunny telling them that she was tracking the killers. Sean left Patrick to tell the soldiers at the nearby fort and left home to find Sunny. Sean followed Sunny's trail of ribbons that she left for him. He was a couple of days behind. He almost got caught in a flash flood and ended up saving a girl named Eileen. He took her home and noticed that she seemed frightened. Sean was attracted to her but didn't let it show because of her being white and him being a half-breed. He didn't stay long due to the attitude of Eileen's father towards him. He continued toward where Sunny was. Sunny and Cole were outside having a picnic when Sean came upon them. She shot his rifle but he shot over their heads to get their attention. Sunny stopped him when he got close enough to shoot Cole and told him that he had saved her. Sean went to Cole's house to stay a few days with them. Cole figured out rather quickly that he was in love with Sunny but he needed to get his father to accept Sunny. They stayed in the Fremont home until after they had their summer barbecue. Sunny stayed in a guest room and Sean slept in the barn. Cole's sister, Nellie, helped Sunny dress for the party and fix her hair. Sunny was uncomfortable dressed like a fashionable white woman but she endured it for Cole. Eileen and her family were invited to the Barbecue and soon arrived. Eileen was ordered by her father to gain the attention of Cole. He wanted her to marry someone who could give him something back and the Fremont family was known for their wealth. Eileen was talking to Cole and was introduced to Sunny and found out that she was Sean's sister. She asked Sunny to send him outside so they could talk. Sunny was worried that she didn't want to be seen with him because he was a half-breed and so was Sean when Sunny told him that she was waiting for him outside. Eileen explained to him the abuse that she bore by her father and that she was worried about the way he had been watching her now that she was grown. Sean didn't understand that a parent could be this way. He agreed to help Eileen and take her away from her father. They set and date to leave and where to meet. Sunny overheard Cole and his father arguing over her and she decided to leave and travel back home with Sean and Eileen. She was in the barn when Nellie's husband, Buck, came in. He was drunk and attempted to rape Sunny. He confessed to Sunny that he had raped and killed her mother. Sunny had her grandfather's club with her and hit him with it. She killed Buck and took one of Cole's horses to escape. Sean had taken his things from the barn left before Sunny to go meet Eileen. She was waiting and they fell asleep waiting for Sunny to show up. Sunny decided not to stop when she didn't see Sean because she was frightened of being caught for what she had done. Sean and Eileen separated when he heard riders approach. Cole was with them and caught up with Sean and they talked. He believed Sean when Sean told him that he hadn't killed Buck. He then concluded that it had been Sunny who killed Buck and he was determined to find out why. Sean was taken into custody but told the sheriff that he didn't think he was the killer. He wanted to make sure that Sean was kept safe. He then went back to his ranch and talked to Stormy who had traveled with Buck when they separated in Yuma. Stormy told Cole that he and Buck had killed Sunny's mother and they had raped her after she was dead. Cole was sickened by what he heard and took Stormy to the sheriff and headed out to find Sunny. He got to Sunny's place and she was hiding from him until she overheard him tell her father that Sean was in jail for killing Buck. She came out and told Cole that she had done it. Cole determined that he would marry her and her being his wife would keep her out of jail. They told the sheriff and the judge that married them what had transpired. The sheriff determined to send a note to the sheriff holding Sean and set him free. Sunny was given a pardon. Eileen had stayed in town where Sean was being held and got a job until he was freed. They decided they would travel a bit before returning to the Callahan farm/ranch. Cole stayed in Yuma until his future stock arrived. He had told his father that he was getting his own place and raising stock of his own. He was going to raise ostrich's. They arrived by train and he and Sunny had their work cut out trying to see how they could herd them and get them to Cole's property. Sunny was convinced by now that Cole was ruling in love with her and that he intended to remain married to her. She knew that she would never love another man.
I enjoyed reading this book so very much. I have started reading all over again. I like seeing justice done. Couldn't stop thinking about my own great grand father and his wife. She was murdered while he and his sons were out hunting. She was the chiefs daughter.
Nothing like getting in trouble, one way or another. Hoot, hoot, here comes the big strong handsome man to the rescue, riding his big beautiful stallion. Very strong minded women.
