I’ve been writing for television all my life, everything from Z Cars, through Juliet Bravo, Boon, Lovejoy, The Bill, Poirot - right up to Midsomer Murders, which I helped to establish. You can see a catalogue of my television and stage work on my website.
I also write crime novels featuring a high ranking police officer Nathan Hawk, who was 'required to retire' as we English so delicately phrase it. Hawk's a man with a fiery temper, biting wit and four grown up children he worries about, sometimes with good reason.
The author of The Dragon's Tail, Douglas Watkinson, is mainly known for his crime novels featuring the hard-bitten, ex-police officer turned private detective "Nathan Hawke". Douglas Watkinson is a longstanding script writer of screenplays for television, having written hundreds of episodes, mainly for crime and mystery series. Recent ones include "Agatha Christie's Poirot" and "Midsomer Murders". He has also written four stage plays: "Let's Do It My Way", "Caesar and Me", "The Dragon's Tail" and "The Wall".
The Dragon's Tail takes place in a clearing by a wooded lakeside in North Wales in late Summer. The action is more or less continuous over one night and the following morning, over four scenes with short gaps. The tensions and relationships are examined between two couples on a camping holiday, one older and one younger. This play has not lasted, despite its initial opening in the West End of London with a superb cast including Penelope Keith and Amanda Root.
