Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.

Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.

Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.

According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.

This is the best book of the entire St Clare's series, in my opinion. Mam'zelle's niece, Claudine, enters St Clare's because she was unhappy with her previous strict convent school - much as the school was unhappy with her. You can see where this is headed! Claudine comes, an irrepressible teenager, full of fun and complete lack of inhibition, which is a refreshing change from the hard-boiled and snotty British kids.

Claudine immediately makes friends and becomes one of the gang. Blyton's xenophobia shows through with everyone talking about the 'English sense of honour', of which Claudine apparently has no idea. Also, in typical Enid fashion, the French girl has no interest in sports at all. But in the end, this high-spirited French girl shows that her sense of honour and adventure is worth much more than the staid girls of St Clare's could even imagine.

Also introduced in this book is the Honourable Angela Favorleigh. A snooty, snobbish, aristocrat, Angela is also beautiful and dumb. Ah, what would we do without these stereotypes? Constantly at war with the other new girl, Pauline, who also boasts of wealth, the two keep the class amused with their extravagant tales. Both also look down upon the fourth newcomer, Eileen. And this is where this book really gets interesting, beyond the usual Enid school porn.

Eileen is the new Matron's daughter. The old one is sick and Eileen and her mother have made their home at St Clare's. Unfortunately, Eileen has problems. As do the girls. The new matron is unpleasant and targets girls who don't get along with her daughter. Eileen is both a sympathetic and antagonistic character. Her sneaking to her mother about the rest of the class annoys them intensely, but at the same time, we also see that Eileen is a scared teenager, trying to figure things out with the help of her brother.

I like everything about this book, but the Claudine scenes were par excellence!

Although like with all of Enid Blyton's St. Clare's novels (and very likely with ALL of the author’s school stories), there is indeed rather much typecasting presented (and with Claudine, with Mamzelle's niece, also ethnic and cultural based one-sidedness and stereotyping), nevertheless Claudine at St. Clare's actually and also shows (in my humble opinion, at least) some of the most nuanced and best characterisations of the series thus far (well, at least with regard to some even if not actually for all of the featured story characters).

For while Claudine for example is depicted by Enid Blyton as somehow being "typically French" and as such also with a supposedly underdeveloped sense of honour and integrity, still her often to be considered and approached as outrageous behaviour also does always seem to occur for very good and even necessary, to be lauded reasons (such as with justification punishing Angela's arrogantly offensive uppity mother by jumping in the pool and drenching her, or protecting the fourth form's midnight feast by locking Matron in a closet). And yes she is, Claudine is, equally always being depicted by Enid Blyton as someone whom you somehow cannot help but like and appreciate (even when she is acting and behaving totally inappropriately and callously).

Also and certainly, even with the negative and offensive characters inhabiting the pages of Claudine at St. Clare's, I personally (and appreciatively) have found all of them both interesting and even described by Enid Blyton with understanding and in fact considerable empathy (how, say, both Eileen and Angela's negative behaviours and peccadilloes have kind of been dictated by their oh so horrible in every way mothers, that Pauline's annoying and tedious boasting is due to her inferiority complex because she cannot handle that her family is poor and finally and of course very much essentially that material wealth and physical attractiveness do not and will never automatically mean that one is noble and honourable on the inside, with regard to one's soul and personality).

A fun (even if still rather predictable) reading experience is Claudine at St. Clare's and as such to and for me also a more than adequate and solid St. Clare's series offering with a high three star ranking, but no, not yet a four star rating for Claudine at St. Clare's, as while I have certainly enjoyed Enid Blyton focussing on Claudine, Angela, Eileen and Pauline, I also do find it rather frustrating and a trifle annoying that in Claudine at St. Clare's the majority of the regularly and always appearing St. Clare's girls (such as Bobby, Janet, Hilary, the O'Sullivan twins etc.) have been given rather short shrift so to speak, have been rendered by Enid Blyton as rather flat and pretty annoyingly cardboard thin.

“Well,” said the soft voice of Gladys, who rarely butted in on any conversation of this sort,
“well, I don’t care if my mother wears her very oldest clothes, I don’t care if she’s got a ladder
in her stockings, I don’t care if she’s hasn’t even powdered her nose—so long as my mother
comes to see me and I can be with her for a few hours, she can be the untidiest, ugliest,
poorest-dressed there—but I shall still be proud of her, and think she’s the best of all!”

This book was so witty and funny, I enoyed every single part of the book! The story is about a French girl named Claudine, that arrives at St Clare's after recovering from "the measle", and how Angela who is spiteful and ungrateful, forever complaining about everything, changes in the end. For me, this book meant to teach you something, whether you're like Angela, you can always change if you really want to and put your mind to it. When Claudine arrives at St Clare's all the fun and the excitement is about to begin, Claudine is a smart, loyal and kind person, but generally also has a great sense of humor!
And personally I think I enjoyed the St Clare's series more than the Malory Towers series...Just a personal taste.
This book is one of my top favorite comfort books, It's one of those novels that you can't lay down, but read and read until you realise you're already more than halfway through:))

The fact that I enjoyed this almost as much at 25 as I did at 13 says a lot about the skills of Enid Blyton. Of course to a modern audience the girls can seem a tad xenophobic and class-conscious, but I'm not one to judge them for being a product of their time. It's still a genuinely funny and engaging read.

Fun memories to re-read an old childhood favourite. While the book is a little dated and very British, I still enjoyed it. Blyton always has her boarding school characters developing and improving especially in their values.

Books for children and young adults are so entertaining with different set of problems and frisky minds always working up their sleeves! Even though at that age, those seemingly trivial problems look big, with big insecurities, hidden complexes, and sometimes impulsive behavior with big outcomes, but that is also the period of learning from mistakes, of growth, of first experiences at every step. It was entertaining to read how some girls at St Clare’s grow as character and how others around them maturely handles everything as the story progresses. Altogether a fun read! Enjoyed it!

Another down to 2*'s. It's like these books were rehashes. They're the same plot lines over and over. She had obviously learned a lot by the time she wrote Malory Towers.

3.5 stars. There were more depths to the plot and characterisation and I rather liked Claudine (because she is a bit like Dahl’s Matilda, one of my favourite fictional characters of all time, though nowhere near as deep, but gosh I must say just as witty). More complex than the previous books in the series with some thought-provoking explorations on fundamental and universal themes such as love and friendship, as the author had shown more instead of merely telling the reader what to think and feel. Quite an engaging read indeed, with a couple of great lessons to learn. However, it was still a bit melodramatic to my taste – particularly and especially to that of my younger self, who had felt angry and depressed because I couldn’t fit in to the culture, politics and melodrama of my school life in the past. Painful to read at times because it was too close to home, or rather, school, where I spent the unhappiest years of my life. Nevertheless, I must admit that I found this book fun and entertaining to read – in fact just what I needed in my process of recovering from a fever. It was also lovely to relive how I survived school, graduated from uni (where I spent the happiest and so far the most fulfilling years of my life) and how all that happened enabled me now to work towards realising my dream 
Yay! I survived school, and that certainly was an accomplishment, as the round peg managed to survive the fierce trap of the square hole (pun intended). This book, with its comical and lighthearted drama, served as a good reminder of all that life is, and isn’t 

One of my childhood favourites, fifth in the 'St Clare's' series about a boarding school for girls. Old-fashioned, of course. The dialogue seems stilted, full of ‘I say!’ and ‘Look here!’ Situations are typecast (a stinkbomb ‘trick’, a midnight feast, a bit of tale-bearing…) and most of the characters are caricatured.

But I enjoyed re-reading it, realising that many moral issues are covered without preaching. Many of my values were formed in part thanks to Enid Blyton; I have a deep-rooted dislike of snobbery and cliquishness, and a horror of cheating. The shallow but good-natured Alison learns something valuable in this book, and it’s a lesson which I hope would still translate to 21st century readers.

This book was originally intended for girls of about 9-12; the main characters in the series are around fourteen in the first book, ‘The Twins of St Clare’s’ (which I also re-read recently) so they must be about sixteen in this one. They seem a lot younger than today’s sixteen-year-olds, and naive in many ways. I don’t think that’s a bad thing in itself, but it means the book is more likely to appeal to younger children, perhaps about 8-10.

Three and a half stars, really.

Now that I reread these books, I realize that these books talk a lot about honor, principles, right actions, owning up, courage to face difficulties. As a child, I imbibed these values through these books. I also see a lot that I don't agree with but the core values that Blyton writes about are something for folks to live by.

I keep going back occasionally to Enid Blyton's boarding schools not just because they are a definite comfort read but also because they give me new perspectives on children as an adult, and helps me relate to challenges my daughter may face or be facing at school. For, it is undeniable that, however less we may like it, there is a lot of group-ism and mini-politics that get played out amongst children, and these books provide excellent views into them.

As an adult, I find the "good" children condescending and judgemental. There is also a distinct class separation you see that comes in this book and I enjoyed how these were handled. You had a rich arrogant girl who is forced to learn humbler ways, a poor girl who is insecure about her class and covers it up by boasting untruths and even keeping her mother away to retain her version. I thought these were handled extremely well, and the morals were conveyed very simply.

Alison emerges to me as the star of this book. How I would have liked a book completely from her perspective.. and a full-fledged novel about this girl's life :)

This is the fifth book in the series, the seventh if we count, as I do, the Pamela Cox continuation novels as worthy parts of the series. But this one was written by Enid Blyton herself.

The girls are now in the Fourth Form, but they still do not have the dignified behavior one would expect of senior girls. They still delight in playing jokes on Mam'zelle, midnight picnics and all the fun that St. Clare's can offer. They also have their internal dramas, mostly featuring the new girls. It's a pity that the regular cast doesn't get to shine more, but since they are at this point reliable and sensible girls, they are not as interesting as the new girls, always full of problems of all kinds.

Among the new girls, we get the title character, Claudine, who is Mam'zelle's niece. She is a carefree and spontaneous creature, who does and says the most outrageous things, but without any real malice in her. As sometimes happens in these books, she is a foreign girl who is rather stereotyped, but quite likable. Contrary to some commentators, I do not consider Blyton at all xenophobic. If anything, she is a bit provincial. If she had had the opportunity to know more people from all parts of the world, she would have seen they are not so different and exotic. Nevertheless, the unconventional Claudine is a delight, and always entertaining.

We also get a new girl who is ashamed of her family, another one who steals and tells tales, a pretty and spoiled rich girl, an unpleasant new matron... Miss Theobald really has a lot of work on her plate this season.

These books obviously are not Shakespeare, and they do not try to be, but I found the characterization in this one quite nuanced, with girls who do bad things out of quite understandable pressures and thoughts. And not just the new girls, but characters like Allison, who can be foolish and easily captivated by glamorous people, but also is sensitive and kind.

Always cheerful and eventful, these books are entertaining and quite good fun.

Sedikit bingung kenapa nama 'Claudine' dijadiin judul bukunya padahal dia cuma anak baru kayak biasanya. But i think the most heart warming story comes from Eileen and Edgar. I feel bad for them. Walaupun sifat Eileen gabisa dibilang baik juga. Yah intinya cerita ini cukup sedikit membuat emosi naik turun.
Berbicara mengenai karakter, mungkin tipikal anak umur segitu atau gimana tapi entah kenapa ga begitu suka Allison. Dia suka memuja, meniru atau mengekori orang-orang yang dia anggap menarik hingga di akhir cerita dia jadi sadar orang yg dia sukai ternyata ga bagus pengaruhnya. Tapi dibuku-buku selanjutnya dia tetep ngulangin sifatnya itu lagi. I don't think she has character development. But idk maybe in real life sometimes we can found that type of person.

The Enid Blyton book is about five girls Alison, Angela, Pauline, Eileen, who are English and a French girl, Claudine at school in St. Clare's. They play Tennis , go swimming and have birthday parties, giving themselves presents. Eileen's mother is the Matron and Eddie her brother. When Eddie doesn't have a job, Eileen steals money, notepaper and stamps for her brother. The Headmistress Ms. Thiebold catches both Eileen and her mother, they are asked to leave the school. Eddie gets another job and provides for his family. Eileen learns typing to take up a job. The other four girls settle in their school life at the St. Clares.

Update: DIT BOEK IS NIET VAN PAMELA COX?????? HALLO???????????? Enid ohmygod wat is dit voor betrayal
