Alan Bennett is an English author and Tony Award-winning playwright. Bennett's first stage play, Forty Years On, was produced in 1968. Many television, stage and radio plays followed, along with screenplays, short stories, novellas, a large body of non-fictional prose and broadcasting, and many appearances as an actor. Bennett's lugubrious yet expressive voice (which still bears a slight Leeds accent) and the sharp humour and evident humanity of his writing have made his readings of his own work (especially his autobiographical writing) very popular. His readings of the Winnie the Pooh stories are also widely enjoyed.

Although this is definitely 'second tier' Bennett, it still contains enough charm and wit to warrant 3 stars. The plot, concerning the dispensation of one of the old 'Stately Homes of England' would necessarily be more meaningful to a UK audience, however.

Lo sfondo di questa commedia è una vecchia dimora nobiliare ormai cadente, come cadenti ne sono i membri che viene, per così dire, contesa da due possibili acquirenti. Un giovane che, agendo per conto di una fantomatica associale, "l'Opera" vorrebbe ritirarla per preservarla nella sua essenza di antica dimora ma traslocandola in una località più accogliente e l'emissario del "National Trust" il quale mira a metterci le mani sopra per conto dei suoi principali in quanto la considera "un pezzo di storia d'Inghilterra".
All'interno e, si può dire, "vittima" di queste manovre vi è l'inquilina della vecchia dimora, Dorothy, la quale lì ha sempre vissuto, in compagnia della propria cosiddetta "dama di compagnia", la quale è, in realtà, la sua sorellastra Iris che vorrebbe che quella dimora perdesse il valore metaforico di "pezzo di storia d'Inghilterra" e restasse solo una delle tante dimore. Il Trust riuscirà a spuntarla. A scoraggiarlo non varrà nemmeno il fatto che quella dimora sia stata utilizzata come set di un film "a luci rosse" perchè, come dice, molto significativamente, l'emissario del "Trust": "Non vi sono magagne che non vengano dimenticate".
La dimora verrà quindi aperta ai turisti, la gente, i quali gireranno per le sue stanze, guidati dalla stessa Dorothy, alla quale viene impedito, anzi vietato, nel farlo, di vestirsi in maniera elegante, forse per dare l'idea della decadenza della casata nobiliare, così da non intimorire la gente che verrà a visitarla. La stessa gente alla quale verrà dato libero accesso alla casa e a tutti i suoi segreti, anche a quelli che delicatezza e, ma sì diciamolo, educazione, suggerirebbero di lasciare privati.
Un testo tagliente e a tratti amaro nel quale Bennett dà una volta di più sfoggio della propria maestria nel dar vita a storie che, dietro la loro patina esteriore, nascondono messaggi profondi.

Questa piece teatrale in 2 atti del mitico Bennett è stato un acquisto fulmineo (autoregalo di un compleanno tondo) e una lettura altrettanto veloce. Narra di antiche dimore inglesi ormai decadenti, di una nobiltà che odora di canfora e vecchi ricordi, di zitelle che ripetono a ruota libera le loro tragedie come fossero ormai episodi accaduti a qualcun altro. Poteva essere più divertente? Forse sì, ma basta un ammicco dell'autore per estorcermi un sorriso, basta un aggettivo che sembra quasi buttato lì a caso per farmi emozionare. Non sarà il migliore dei suoi lavori, ma Gente si legge volentieri e, per quanto iperbolico, fa riflettere.

Lord Linlithglow era davvero un personaggio insigne? Viva la coscia vincerà l'Oscar? Ma soprattutto a chi andrà casa Stacpoole con il suo corredo di vasi da notte, la scrivania Chippendale, i mobili Adam e soprattutto la ciotola del gatto? Le tre eredi hanno il compito di stabilire il futuro di questa antica casa del South Yorkshire.

Mi è capitato di recente di vivere in prima persona una vicenda non molto diversa e sebbene nessun film sia stato girato all'interno di nessuna delle due case ho materiale per scrivere un libro potenzialmente altrettanto avvincente di Gente.

Alan Bennett sempre bravo, sempre da ottime valutazioni.

Commedia teatrale di Alan Bennett di un british che più british non si può.
Una grande casa di famiglia nello Yorkshire che le due anziane eredi non riescono più a mantenere e una guerra di nervi sulle possibili soluzioni: Jude, la più giovane, vicario in una parrocchia della zona, sta facendo accordi per donarla al National Trust, invece Dorothy, la maggiore, che vive ancora lì dentro, vorrebbe mettere all'asta gli arredi (compresi dei pregiati pitali mai svuotati dell'urina degli ospiti illustri passati dalla casa nei decenni di splendore), magari vendere l'immobile in un secondo momento e intanto noleggiare alcune stanze come set di film... porno.
Fa ridere a momenti ma c'è anche molta malinconia, una sorta di resa all'imbarbarimento e agli orrori dell'oggi.
Mi è piaciuta ma non mi ha fatto impazzire perché forse non ero dell'umore adatto, e non amo molto i cambi di scena un po' surreali in una commedia ironica ma tutto sommato realistica (così come la ventilata possibilità di spostare la casa in una zona più ridente tipo il Dorset).

JUNE Alla gente non si sfugge.
DOROTHY Credevo che ai preti dovesse piacere, la gente.
JUNE No. Noi dobbiamo amarla. È diverso.
DOROTHY Ma tu credi in Dio?

finished 3.12.2024. Alan Bennett's writing is an unbelievable comfort to me. Recently, I've been spending hours on YouTube watching lectures and talks of his. Yesterday was on libraries, the day before was on private education. His articulation surprised me as it strongly contrasts to his writing, to me, in that his style tends to be a condensed and veiled scene, (the sort of scene that plays out in the window of the flat in front of yours at 9 in the evening) yet in these lectures he speaks atmospherically/warmly/directly yet sweetly.
'People' is not very warm, and the atmosphere is not very sweet. Still, it's Bennett, woven through June, Iris, Theodore, the character of Dorothy evoking the sharpest image of Frances de la Tour throughout. Delightful, witty, fleeting, piercing then retracting. Very much enjoyed (despite the obstacle of my nationality preventing me from knowing the first thing about the Trust.)

started 22.11.2024. signed first edition from san francisco books. it's been 9 years, most likely, since i first encountered bennett's writing. no amount of alan bennett and his unspokenness: curt, blunt references (between the english, between leeds natives, between his characters), will ever suffice.

Charming, dry, sharp wit, and sharp cultural/political critique. The latter might not translate outside the UK, but the National Trust satire is really about national mythology. Still, it’s a more oblique critique than some might appreciate. Like many plays this is likely much better onstage than the page, but the writing is still funny and the setup amusing. Not the brilliant of History Boys or Talking Heads, but worth a read. If you’ve not read these top tier Bennett works, run don’t walk. Talking Heads has also been filmed twice, the older ones from the 80s are on YouTube many of them, the newer ones DVD. Also highly recommend his three volumes of diaries—few people’s diaries are that interesting, funny, or literate.

Questa cosa del porno l'autore la sta mettendo un po' dappertutto ultimamente, come se in mancanza di idee migliori, il porno potesse riempire ogni suo vuoto creativo. Questa è una mia illazione, ovviamente. Per il resto direi che questo lavoro non è niente di che, a parte qualche aforisma davvero riuscito sull'Inghilterra e la bizzarra quanto divertente avversione della protagonista per le metafore.

People is characterised by Bennett's trademark northern humour: sharp, clever, occasionally arch and with considerable human warmth. It's also characterised by what in recent years has become his trademark sloppiness. Bennett wants to get certain gags in, and sometimes goes meandering off to collect every laugh possible regardless of whether the journey was worth it.

Laughs come thick and fast in the first 20 minutes, but they peter out into occasional chuckles as the interval draws near and the script's energy dissipates. The second quarter of the play needs a complete rewrite; I didn't learn much or laugh much, and my attention started to wander. It's possible that I nodded off. Whatever I missed didn't seem important because when the action really got going in the second half, it still made perfect sense.

And it's worth waiting for the second half. The making of the porn film is hilariously scripted with an Orton-like farcical energy, while the denouement is slyly satirical. Maybe three stars is harsh, but I'm getting a bit tired of Bennett publishing half-baked work and still being hailed as a genius.

*This edition includes a long introduction by the author. It's the rambling drivel one expects from Bennett these days. I would say it struggles to make a point, but to be honest it doesn't really try.
