A delightful book of bite-sized gems. Like a box of chocolates, this compilation of stories retold by the famous children's ventriloquist and television show producer is a fun compilation of tales perfect for the upcoming holiday of Easter.
From the tale of a mischievous bunny to the legend of why pretzels were invented, to the story of the history of Faberge eggs, this is a great collection. Also included are some great legends about Jesus, such as the story of the Legend of the Robin, (why the robin now has a red breast), and the Legend of the Dogwood Tree.
The author also includes a retelling of Oscar Wilde's "The Selfish Giant," which is one of my favorite stories.

Each story is designed to take one minute to read aloud, but despite their brevity, they are profound and told effectively.
Recommended during a busy Easter week when you just want something quick but that also has heart.
God bless you all.

The copyright on my book is 1990. Goodreads states it as 1993. These are short legends of Easter written by Shari Lewis. This is not a book for young children. This is for kids who already know how to read. Maybe 4rth grade & up. I know from experience it's hard to read it to a younger reader & keep their interest.
Nice illustrations.

This one is sentimental, my mother gave it to me when I was a little too old for it but certain stories really spoke to me. I've always been fascinated by plants so the story of the dogwood tree having been the wood used in Jesus' crucifixion really struck me. Now that I've been formally educated in horticulture the premise really seems absurd, the illustrations are of Eastern Dogwood which did not exist in the region at the time. The magical feeling I got from the story of Faberge's eggs has never left me and I make trips to visit a very fine collection of them at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts every couple years. The illustrations are a bit old-school but really fit the stories well and are lovely--I particularly like the rooster bragging about his beautifully painted eggs and how they will hatch the most gorgeous chicks. The designs on the eggs are still something I aspire to create myself!

My efficient mother weeded this from our home collection many years ago and I was so relieved to find a used copy to replace it! I hope to share it with my own kids some day.
