I saw this book on the shelf of the cottage I was staying at and I had to give it a read. Fred was probably the earliest comic strips that I knew of (thanks to my father) and I sort of grew up the character.

The book tells the story of Fred (and the cartoonist who created him) through the years - and its a fascinating one. I remember growing up with Fred Bassett - from the comic strips to the cartoons on TV to even vinyl single my brother had (it had a scratch on it that ironically would make it jump just as the iconic likes "stop scratching" were delivered so it would repeated on indefinitely if left alone)

The comic strips are pretty tame by todays standards however they both capture and era as well as a way of observing the world - a lovely book and a fun reminder from the past
