This book covers the increasingly complex area of Signal Integrity issues in PCB design thoroughly, but without a need for great technical depth of understanding.Section 1 is an overview of electrical engineering principles that can serve as an introductory course for someone without any engineering education, or a review for someone who has. Section 1 can be skipped for people who already have a solid understanding in EE.Section 2 covers the major causes of signal integrity problems on printed circuit boards (a) EMI, (c) crosstalk, (c) signal reflections and transmission lines, and (d) power system decoupling (bypass capacitors). Each topic is covered in depth with real world illustrations and numerous examples. Two complete chapters are devoted to examples of how high-end computer simulation software packages view signal integrity problems and their solutions.

Anybody looking for a serious book on pcb design probably should skip this book and look harder for something more specific to their needs. I think most designers worth their salt aren't going to need this book.

This book is best for maybe technician-level guys, programmers, or hardware guys who are just looking for a general idea of what's going on. There's a lot of topics covered briefly but not a lot of details aside from some pedagogical examples. There's general guidelines but I would guess that most designers already working in the industry will say, "no duh."

For a guy like me who doesn't know much of anything it's fine but it's not much help for a guy who's looking for solutions to difficult problems.

I was kind of hoping that I'd be able to learn how to check or improve PCB designs but this wasn't the right book. I actually don't think I'm qualified to say anything more than I just didn't learn anything.
