John Richard Lott Jr. (born May 8, 1958) is an American economist and political commentator. Lott was formerly employed at various academic institutions including the University of Chicago, Yale University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Maryland, College Park, and at the American Enterprise Institute conservative think tank. He is currently a Fox News opinion contributor. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from UCLA.
This book is actually a collection of articles that Mr Lott wrote about (as is stated in the title) Firearms, Economics and Public Policy. The first half of the book contains articles specifically about gun rights while the second half covers multiple topics. Overall it is an engaging and enlightening read that helps reveal the bias our media has against traditional conservative values, and how that bias affects public perception in a negative and oftentimes life-threatening way. (i.e. Newspapers reporting that the good guys "subdued the assailant and held him until police arrived" while conveniently leaving out the fact that the good guys were BOTH armed and the assailant only released his weapon and gave up AFTER the good guys told him they would shoot him if he didn't. Leaving out the fact that the good guys were armed leads people to believe that they can just "tackle and subdue" a mass-murder, which almost always ends up in more innocent blood being shed.) If you want to gain a greater understanding of the facts around the case for concealed carry and defensive gun use, you should definitely read this and John's other books. There is no better expect in the field of gun control studies and his work is well worth the time it takes to read.
