Thy Kingdom Come

Rate this book
This collection of sermons arises from the culture of an active parish life as a part of its usual worship routine. With over sixty sermons spanning Pre-Lent, all forty days of Lent, and the Sundays after Easter, this book now serves as an excellent daily devotion for both pastors and parishioners.

Distinctive in his preaching style, Rev. David H. Petersen fluidly interweaves the words of Holy Scripture with his own, immersing us in the text and applying Law and Gospel with sharp insight. As Luther explains in his catechisms, preaching the Word brings the kingdom of heaven from Christ, through the Holy Spirit, to the individual, always pointing us to Christ and Him crucified, died, and risen.

Like God With Us for Advent and Christmastide, these Lenten and Easter season sermons as devotions were incredibly convicting and soul-stirring. The journey from Septuagesima through Pentecost is as humbling as one would expect, but the hope that resonates, even as we take the spiritual walk to Calvary with ours sins on Christ's shoulders, is comforting because always we are waiting for the certain return of the Alleluias and the Easter resurrection joy. Pastor Petersen has been granted a gift with words and I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to expose my heart and soul to the preached words the Holy Spirit has given him.

David Petersen is one of the finest preachers in the Church today. This collection is a wonderful devotion for (Pre) Lent through Easter.

Like drinking from a well springing up in the disciplines of lent. Thank you Pastor Petersen for staying true to the timeless confessions of the catholic faith and for shepherding the hearts of readers with the profound distinctions of law and Gospel that allow us to wage war against the devil, the world, and our own sinful flesh. This will be read over and over.

What began on Ash Wednesday culminates today, on the Feast of Pentecost, at least in the Church Year and in this marvelous collection of Rev. Petersen’s faithful sermons! I have loved including each and every one in my Lenten and Easter season devotional life. Every bit as good as the Advent/Christmas/Epiphany collection (“God With Us”), I can’t recommend these books enough. Thanks be to God for the faithful preaching of this pastor and all pastors who cling to God’s Word as their sole source of truth and guidance.

Sermons by Pr. Petersen from the third Sunday before Lent (Septuagasima) through the Feast of Pentecost. They are often times raw material -- a mix of theology, Law, Gospel, and human broken-ness. Ranging from two pages (most of the time) to five pages (uncommon) these sermons are a perfect devotional for the season of pre-Lent through Pentecost. Comes with a helpful Scripture index in the back.

This book is similar to the pastor's book for Advent and Christmas, called God With Us. It actually begins before Ash Wednesday, with three readings that use some words that I had never heard of before. And honestly, that is one of the pieces of this book that is slightly off-putting to me. I find it mildly pretentious. Nevertheless, there are a lot of really good readings in this volume, that are, I suppose, mini-sermons that were actually preached at gatherings. From Ash Wednesday until Easter, there is a reading for every day (occasionally two). And then from Easter Sunday until Pentecost (which was yesterday, as I'm writing this), there is one reading per Sunday. At the back of the book, there are several additional readings for other minor festival days, most of which I missed, so I just read through those last night after I had finished the reading for Pentecost.

The reason I cannot bring myself to give this book five stars, as I did the Advent/Christmas book, is personal. Petersen allowed some what I would call bigotry to surface in his reading on "Thursday of Passion Week" (and right there is another issue I have with this book . . . "Passion Week" in this book comes before Palm Sunday, after which the readings are designated as "Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday," and so on . . . that's very confusing to me). I know he is LCMS and they are opposed to ordaining women as pastors for reasons that are understandable, but I do not agree with their reasons. In this particular reading, Petersen literally compares ordaining women to homosexuality and fornication! I literally almost threw the book in the trash when I read that. But I'm not one to "throw out the baby with the bathwater," so I kept on and found further inspiration in other readings.

However, there are at least a couple other readings where he seemed angry about things, and that was also bothersome.

Overall, though, the book is worth having and readings. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in seasonal devotional readings from someone who has pretty wise insight (except for that one thing).
