This is a painful book. The sad part is that the information it contains is very interesting. Unfortunately, it reads like stereo instructions. There are sections where the authors use incessant amounts of unintelligible jargon, then realize what they've done, and rewrite the whole piece in plain English (beginning with "In other words..."). I did enjoy reading about a few of the different schools of historical thought, and they did an "almost good" job of explaining Marxian analysis. They wrote about each school in a linear fashion, and then explained how they were interconnected (how the Marxists affected the Annales, who influenced the New Left, who influenced post-modernism or post structuralism, environmental history, gender history, ect.). This order helped with understanding. If you are interested in historical theory, and can't find a book better than this one, give it a read. However - be prepared. It's what I call a "counter book" (one that you have to read while standing at the counter to stay awake).
