It seems I've ended up with these tiny pets most of my life - why not read up on them? This is actually pretty informative.

This was published in 2006 so hamster care has changed drastically since then, but this book has the fundamentals down.

For my many followers interested in also reading this educational book on hamsters, I will point out that they called a 20 gallon tank “large” but now the recommended minimum is 40 gallons. Also, the hamster community will show up to your house and murder you if you put your hamster in a ball these days. Stay safe out there

There are too many things that I, and other books, would completely disagree with when it comes to proper care. There were a couple good ideas that I had never considered or read anywhere though.

A couple things I think are wrong are:

1) Clean the cage more often and more thoroughly than they advise.

2) There are more ways to pick up a hamster that are safer, quicker, and easier - one of which is over the back with one hand with fingers scooped under the butt. (The book warns against placing hand over the back.)

3) There are times when an adult may need to hold a hamster by the skin at the back of the neck. How else are you going to check to make sure teeth are healthy, not too long, and growing evenly, or whether the hamster may need a vet in certain situations?

There are more but I am just listing what I can remember without going back through the book. Just please read more than this one or pick something else.
