For every reader who’s bought into the idea of working harder, doing more, smiling bigger, or running faster to get more out of life–and then faced disappointment, fatigue, or the unnerving unexpected, award-winning author Jane Rubietta offers relief and irresistible promise .
Her fresh approach to fifteen of Jesus’s familiar but too-often forgotten invitations in the New Testament remind readers of His promise that: Life can be better, more sure and satisfying, more beautiful, and truly tasty–not just someday, in heaven, but here and now .
With humor, unforgettable experiences, and gracious encouragement, Jane plumbs Scripture to bring alive these invitations of help, hope, and the refuge of Home. She takes readers on an exploration of the fifteen times in Scripture that Jesus invites followers to come–for relief, light, help, hope, and even breakfast. Jane then offers engaging ideas and tangible things readers can do to draw near to these promises.
Come Closer is an invitation to a richer, more spiritual life–an invitation that will open readers’ eyes to the love and feast God intends every soul to experience.
Jesus resurrected Lazarus with the words, “Come forth.” He called His disciples to “Come, follow Me.” Another Scripture encourages us to come to Jesus if we are weary and heavy-laden.
In Come Closer, Jane Rubietta examines these and other circumstances in which Jesus beckons us to come. Each chapter outlines reasons to come to Jesus: for abundant life, for healing, for help, for acceptance—just to name a few. Rubietta probes like a skillful surgeon with scalpel in hand, prompting readers to dig deep and identify what things in their lives prevent them from coming to Jesus.
Rubietta gives refreshingly vulnerable glimpses into her own struggles. She dares readers to no longer be satisfied being “dead women walking”—in bondage because of past hurts, disappointments or fear—but to come to Jesus and receive healing and renewed zeal for life. In addition, she urges women to develop life-giving relationships that will help them in their journey to wholeness.
Each chapter begins with a stanza or two from a familiar hymn, and concludes with meaty reflective questions. Rubietta invites the reader to an “interactive time with Christ”—what would He say to you as you search your heart in response to the questions, and what might you say to Him? I encourage the reader to pray aloud the heartfelt prayers included. They, too, will prick your heart and inspire you.

This book is me on paper. I resonnated so much it was scary. Especially as she talked about the crushing ways of perfectionism and the hard wood floors story. Oh, it made me want to be more flexible!
