Is this book something one should really analyse?
It is entertaining and light, can be read fast, is in parts moving, parts funny.
Two interesting questions that come up are these
1 Why does the book feel like good writing?
2 Does anything make it special?
To the first question the answer is that Duve is simply excellent at finding apt and expressive descriptions, and she has a good sense of humour. Fun doesn’t come from saying the obvious, or from silly situations, or overstated and unrealistic events. Fun in this book comes from looking reality in the face as it is, and nevertheless seeing the comical or satirical side of events. This requires distancing: one cannot always take one’s emotions to be the most important thing in the world, and this distancing skill is lost on much recent literature and cinema.
To the second question the answer is yes. The book goes beyond being a book about love stories and a chronic lack of self-confidence, and of problems of self-image and obesity.
The book manages to offer a view of a changing society and the trajectory of many people in it. It paints a compelling picture of how masses of young West-Europeans lived through the 1980s and 1990s. It captures many generational experiences, and the popular ideas which structured public thinking, the fashionable ideas about work, psychology, family, and self which influence most people’s life-choices in every generation.
Duve has profound sympathy and understanding to the masses of people who never get to or are never able to forge their own way, who cannot question the official narrative of politics and business of how things are going, and to develop critical tools that would help them to create their own positive, constructive stories. These people become victims of the dominant propaganda of politicians and companies, of marketing, of how circles of powerful people would like others to live their lives. The obsession with looks, the idea that personal satisfaction is tied to career success, and so on are all some of the recent neolib ideological tools that the people running society at the moment use to indoctrinate people into lifestyles that benefit large global businesses. These ideas wreak havoc in Anne’s life as well.
Many people found the book too dark. I found it in some places a little light rather: when it came to some of the interesting deeper issues, there were a few which were accepted as part of life with a shrug and not explored in sufficient detail. This is in line with the protagonist's, Anne’s, lack of control over her life and her inability to deal with complex issues, but nevertheless it would have been interesting to see how things develop, even if Anne cannot understand how events unfold. Still, there is no lack of humour, and a hard-earned but gratifying conclusion, without sugar coating, but offering and ability of further development for Anne.
The book is not Bridget Jones: the Jones story is one where the heroine overcomes many difficulties and achieves a happy ending. BJ is a retelling of an old love-story trope in an updated outfit of the public image of the average girl of the mid-1990s. It is bound to end well. This is not a Love Song does not offer easy resolution: it treats real problems as real, not as fairy tale ones that can be wished away. People have to live with themselves and others, even if those selves and those others aren’t always easy to deal with, attractive, or pleasant.

In seiner Radikalität und seiner Ehrlichkeit so herzzerreißend traurig, dass man von der Geschichte der jungen Frau tief erschüttert wird und dennoch die Schönheit des Lebens nicht aus dem Blick verliert. Das Buch ist in keiner Weise komisch oder eine Unterhaltungslektüre und anders, als das Cover verraten soll, geht es auch nicht vorrangig um Gewichtsprobleme und Diäten.
Anne Strelau ist anders als alle anderen. Sie ist sensibel, schüchtern und sucht nach nichts mehr, denn nach Anerkennung von einer Gesellschaft, in die sie niemals wirklich zu passen scheint. Es geht um große, bedingungslose Gefühle, die man nur empfinden kann, wenn man sich von Logik, Besonnenheit und Disziplin nicht länger zurückhalten lässt.

В аннотации написано, что книга - романтическая комедия, но мне не стало смешно ни через 100, ни через 300 страниц. Книга о ненависти к себе и утрате своего я, замене его желанием быть стройной.
У главной героини проблемы с едой. Её РПП тянется из детства и затесняет собой возможность нормальной социализации. И как на зло, за жизнь ей не попалось ни одного адекватного психолога.
Зато попалось много мужиков. И даже одна фантазия. Однако из-за фиксации на весе, в ней не осталось ничего, что на самом деле должно было двигать к этим мужикам. Было только желание обладать статусом "меня все ещё хотят". А это звучит скорее грустно, нежели смешно, несмотря на все нелепые ситуации в отношениях.
Интересно было прочитать про подростковую культуру Германии 90-х. А ещё про то, насколько токсичной может семья. Собачку жалко. И героиню, которой эту собачку не купили и даже не отдали после, тоже.
Резюме не будет. В книге его тоже нет. Лишь множество заметок на полях, через которые можно подумать, а на что ты готов для поддержания самооценки.

Wunderschön!
Dieses Buch sind 280 Seiten pure Realität; alles fühlt sich unfassbar - oder doch gerade fürchterlich fassbar - an. Man erkennt sich in Anne wieder und es schmerzt, aber tröstet einen zu gleich.
Auch das Ende passt zum Gesamtwerk. Es hat mich für einige Tage sehr nachdenklich gemacht ich kann es jeder Frau wirklich nur ans Herz legen dieses Buch zu lesen; eins der wenigen Bücher, die mich sehr stark im Herzen getroffen haben; absolute Empfehlung!

Interesting read, but a bit depressing. Not a single upbeat note to be found anywhere, life for the heroine is just a huge valley of tears in a world that couldn't care less.

"Wir würden immer am Rande stehen, einander Kuchen schenken, die Hermann hießen, und zusehen, wie die flotten Mädchen das wahre, das lohnende Leben führten. Atemlos würden wir ihren Geschichten lauschen und uns damit trösten, dass wir die besseren Klassenarbeiten schrieben."
Nur ein Satz von vielen, weswegen ich das Buch an einem Tag weggelesen habe. Vielleicht weil ich selbst lange Zeit so ein Mädchen war, das stets unglücklich verliebt war, sich in ihrem Körper nie so richtig wohlfühlte, lange nirgends dazugehöre und stets unglücklich und unerwidert verliebt war. Die Protagonistin Anne erinnert sich daran in Etappen auf einer Reise zu einem dieser Männer. Zwar ist ihr vergangenes Leben ziemlich deprimierend, aber es wird auf eine oft sehr komische und nie kitschige Weise beschrieben. (Den Stern Abzug gab es nur für den Part im therapeutischen Workshop, den ich als sehr bemüht und zäh empfand.)
Die Zeit, in der in meinem Leben nichts so richtig passte, am wenigsten ich selbst, habe ich inzwischen lange hinter mir gelassen. Ich wünsche es allen anderen "Annes" da draußen, dass es ihnen ähnlich geht.

FAZIT - Dies ist kein Liebeslied und schon gar kein Liebesroman, auch wenn es um die Liebe geht. Im Grunde geht es um ein trauriges Mädchen, dass deprimiert ist, sich selber nicht liebt und ständig mit seinem Gewicht kämpft. Von der Grundschule bis Anfang 30 wird dieser Weg gründlich verfolgt, ehe Peter und England eine kleine Rolle bekommen. Für mich eher ein Buch, dass auf Fremdschämen, Sarkasmus und Ironie aufgebaut ist und sich um den ständigen Kampf der Anerkennung dreht. Leider wenig unterhaltsam umgesetzt.

My second book by this author. Like the first book, this one started off well, but the second half became a bit too depressing. The narrator seems to stay the same hopeless creature throughout the entire book with nothing ever changing. Perhaps that is meant to reflect real life, but it gets tiring in the end. I don’t think I’ll read this author again.

Auf Dies ist kein Liebeslied (2002) von Karen Duve bin ich gestoßen, weil eine Freundin mir erzählt hat, Wolfgang Herrndorf habe gesagt, Karen Duve sei Gott. Tatsächlich hat Karen Duve mich in ihrem Schreibstil an Herrndorf erinnert: mit trockenem Humor beschreibt sie die Absurditäten des alltäglichen Lebens und auch die Traurigkeit, die Menschen alltäglich verspüren. Beim Lesen wollte ich lachen und weinen zugleich. Außerdem meinte meine Freundin im damaligen Gespräch, Dies ist kein Liebeslied befasse sich mit Körperbildern. Tatsächlich fand ich es beklemmend und gleichzeitig nicht allzu verwunderlich, wie sehr die Protagonistin ihren Selbstwert von ihrem Körpergewicht abhängig macht.
Dies ist kein Liebeslied ist ein Roman über die dreißigjährige Anne, die ihr Leben lang unter ihrem Körpergewicht - genauer: unter dem, was ihr aufgrund der Wahrnehmung ihres Körpers in der Gesellschaft gespiegelt wurde - gelitten hat. Wir begleiten sie auf einem Flug nach London, wo sie einen Mann besuchen will, in den sie seit 12 Jahren verliebt ist. Der Roman spielt jedoch größtenteils in Rückblenden auf Annes Kindheit und Jugend. Berührend fand ich vor allem ihre Erfahrungen zu Schulzeiten. Nicht dass es noch eines weiteren Beweises bedurft hätte, dass Schulsport offensichtlich das Ziel hat zu traumatisieren (Stichwort: Bundesjugendspiele). Aber beim Lesen wurde ich einmal mehr daran erinnert, wie schön es ist, dass die Schulzeit vorbei ist.

Translated title: This Is Not A Love Song by Karen Duve. Anne is a thirty something overweight woman on a flight to England to see a childhood friend who happens to be the only man she has ever loved. Whilst on the flight Anne reflects on her life from childhood and we learn about the battles with her weight and her past relationships. Not much else to tell really. This was utter rubbish. The book is described on different websites as being funny. No it isn't, Anne is not a likeable character - more a strange Bridget Jones with no personality. Not sure which parts I was supposed to be finding funny. Perhaps the humour was lost in the translation. All I know is that the story started, plodded along without any high points and then ended. Like a flatline on a heart monitor. The book had been sitting on my shelf for a few years after buying it on the strength of Richard and Judy's recommendation. I decided to read it as a change from the thrillers/horrors that I normally read and the only high point of the book is that it made me crave getting back to my usual genre of reading once again.

Ein intensiver Roman. Hatte für mich durchaus Zeitreise-Qualitäten, da ich durch die Erinnerungen der Ich-Erzählerin immer wieder auch emotional in eigene, lange zurückliegende Erlebnisse (vor allem aus meiner Schulzeit) abtauchen konnte.
Ob es nun um die Nachteile ging, wenn man als Frau nicht ständig lächelt, oder um die Beschreibung wahnwitziger Therapie-Workshops, bis hin zu der Feststellung, dass manche Vorstellungen vermutlich besser sind als die Realität ("Daß ich mir nichts mehr wünsche, als mit ihm zusammenzusein, bedeutet ja nicht, daß ich dazu auch in der Lage wäre."), ich habe in diesem Buch vieles (wieder)gefunden, mit dem zu beschäftigen sich lohnt.

Re-read. Das erste Mal 2004 gelesen. Und dann jetzt 2016. Wie anders man ein Buch nach 12 Jahren wahrnehmen kann... Beim ersten Lesen hatte es mir besser gefallen.
