After twelve years of estrangement from her husband Piers and struggling to bring up their son Matthew single handed. Abby found herself thrown unavoidably into Piers company again - and found herself torn between the two of them. She could not deny that Matthew needed a father - something that was as firmly convinced as ever that Matthew was not his son. And meanwhile if there was anything Piers formidable mother could do to make the situation any worse then she was going to do it! How was Abby going to sort it all out?
Anne Mather is the pseudonym used by Mildred Grieveson, a popular British author of over 160 romance novels. She also signed novels as Caroline Fleming and Cardine Fleming. Mildred Grieveson began to write down stories in her childhood years. The first novel that she actually finished, Caroline (1965), was also her first book to be published. Her novel, Leopard in the Snow (1974), was developed into a 1978 film.
Second chance story after 12 years. H/h married and then split up four months later when h got pregnant at 18. Hero thought he was sterile because of the mumps. Evil mom basically drove her out of the district.
Idiot heroine never took money from the rich hero even though his name is on her son's birth certificate and they are still married. *sigh*
The story opens with the hero sending a letter letting the heroine know he is divorcing her to marry some sweet young thing. Heroine is also due to lose her job. Oh, and her son is a juvenile delinquent - and has been one since he found out his father isn't dead.
For some reason, the heroine doesn't want to explain that his father rejected him because he thought he was sterile. Because she thinks he'll believe that his mother was a tramp, just as father did? The kid still *knows* his father rejected him, so the pain is already there. Why not tell him the truth that his father is an idiot? It's wonky logic - but then this is Anne Mather and she needs to hang this angst over the heroine's head.
There's also a frail Aunt Hannah who wants the heroine to live with her in her cottage in the shadow of the great estate where the hero and his spider of a mother live. What could possibly go wrong? Also, the town gossips believe the heroine and not the hero (!). This is a first since it's usually the heroine who gets the blame.
So heroine returns to the district with the son for some very uncomfortable meetings with the hero that will keep that kid in therapy for the next twenty years. Eventually H/h fall into bed together and regret it. H's mother tries some last minute meddling. The son runs away. The wanna be OM doctor makes the hero jealous. It's all part of the angsty soup that will eventually bring about an HEA - when secrets are revealed and the hero finally gets that second opinion from another doctor.
The best part was the hero shipping his mother off to Australia along with the bitchy housekeeper. He also got Aunt Hannah a companion so she won't live with them at the manor. And the new school the son will go to takes boarders - so if he gets lippy they can get rid of him during the week.
LOL, these people are terrible. Hero had other women while separated. Heroine was celibate and poor and lived with an ungrateful tween for 12 years. Just what you'd expect in a vintage HP.
"I love you",she said when she was outside and Piers had wound the window to say goodbye."And i love you",he answered, looking at her mouth,so that when she turned away, she felt as if he had kissed her again.
-Abby and Piers
*** I liked reading "Season of Mists" about the estranged married couple Abby and Piers Roth who haven`t seen each other for 12 years. He sends her a letter, saying he wants to divorce her.Abby and her teenaged son Matt then goes back to Rothside to take care of her old aunt, and on her return Piers just can`t stay away from her and even decides to take responsibility of Matt despite thinking he is another mans son.
We gets loads of chemistry and jealousy between the married couple who badly got hurt by the past.Piers realizes he can`t marry another woman after succumbing to hot sex with his wife, admitting to himself that he still loves her after all this time.Misunderstandings get sorted out and we get a HEA where both Abby and Piers plan a exotic honeymoon. This book also have made me realize that i need to cut down the 5 stars i have rated other harlequins with this type of trope when i was a early teenager.I don`t like his irrational pride and jealousy that took 12 years away, and the 12 years he could have spent with his son instead of disowning him like that.Their son Matthew Roth proves to be a wonderful future hero, that hopefully will learn from his parents mistakes.
Great angsty story. Hero and heroine were married and in love but their marriage didn't last due to his evil mother. She made hero believe the child heroine expected was not his and that his young wife was a cheater. Twelve years later they meet again and they can't fight their feelings.
Pretty good, pretty angsty. It fits the bill if you are looking for a book where he really done her wrong in the past and continues to treat her like crap when they meet again 12 years later. But of course he can't stay away from her and you know that if she had come near him at any time in the last 12 years the exact same thing would have happened. He was a moth to her flame and always had been.
Well written. Vintage Anne Mather really can't be beat.
Abby (the poor girl) and Piers (the rich man) fall in love, get married, and are happy together until his mettling family finds a way to break them up. Now 12 years have past and they have not seen each since but they are still married.
Trouble forces Abby home to her aunt's only to run into Piers and his new woman. Still feeling the burn from their parting Abby really wants nothing to do with the man that believes her child is not his. But the child has other ideas and in between getting in trouble and trying to get close to his dad, the passion starts burning.
Abby really tries to hate Piers but he keeps getting in her way and soon Piers' truth comes out leaving them both doubting what was true or not.
Learning the truth brings them both pain and love.
Was a good well written read. These older romances are just full of sweetness and charm.
I love this book! It’s crazy I know, but it made an impression on me as a newby, very innocent teen 40 years ago. So it has a special place in my heart. I was so happy to find it when I started reading HP’s recently after a 25+ year hiatus. However, I wasn’t on good-reads right away, and never wrote a review. So, after a recent comment on one of AOU’s pages, I decided to reread so I could do just that.
The story was written in 1982. Which if this is real time, that means the events in the story started 12-14 years before when it would have have been the late 60’s. This is a time when dna/paternity testing was not something you heard of in everyday conversations.
I guess you also didn’t seek 2nd opinions and you let your mummy tell your grown ass what to believe.
Here comes the characters: This book comes complete with an asshole hero, evil MIL, bratty, juvenile delinquent 11 year old son, self sacrificing, bullied heroine who at times has a spine; an elderly aunt who sees and knows truths but lets the main characters hash it out; a local, widowed doctor who will make someone a great husband(just not our h), and a young chippy ow, that we hear about but never meet.
Here comes the trainwreck…choo, choo…. SPOILERS ARE COMING….IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW DETAILS THEN 🛑 STOP 🛑 RIGHT NOW!!!!
Once upon a time, our hero 24ish Piers needed a secretary to work at the manor house as he recently became lord of all after his father’s passing. Mumsy is still alive living in the home with her Igor of a servant Ms. James. . He hired 16 year old Abby, our heroine to handle the paperwork. (Ah, he had noticed her about town before and found her to be a tempting wench). At 17, she decides to go to a local dance with a boy her own age(Tristan). Tristan’s father was going to pick them up after the dance, but wouldn’t you know it the H was passing by and saved the father an extra trip to the h’s house(and her getting a goodnight peck on the cheek by Tristan) After this incident, things heat up between the h and H. He, full of hocked up desire, takes her virginity in a meadow(with her consent) . It hurt. She asked if it was ok for him. He wanted to show her the earth could move for her, so since he was only 24 he was able to do a repeat performance right away. With the edge taken off, he did a much better job pleasing her. It sounds as if they are lovers for a little bit, and then he marries her. MIL already had a proper, good wife picked out for him, so she is not pleased with this little guttersnipe. She makes innuendos about the h and the local boy Tristan. The H saw with his own eyes her and Tristan coming out of a barn, with the h wearing hay as an accessory. When it is found out that she is pregnant 4 months into the marriage, the H adds 2 and 2 together (with mumsy’s help) and determines that is wife who he has sex with daily(it says that) has cheated on him. Why? Because mumsy had him tested before his wedding to see if the mumps had affected his potency. According to the senile dr who did the testing it was found that the H was indeed sterile(of course he didn’t tell his bride to be that!) He makes his accusations. The h leaves town for London, leaving her elderly aunt (who raised her) alone in a town where gossip travels faster than a speeding bullet. (No need for phones here!) Shortly after she leaves town, the boy Tristan leaves as well for parts unknown, making the H feel even more satisfied with his conclusion.
The book opens almost 12 years later, H is not quite 30 yet and her son is 11. She has never taken any money from the H, and her son for 10 years thought his dad was dead. When he reads some letters sent by the aunt he realizes his father is alive and his mom is a big fat liar(or slim attractive liar, since it is an hp and she is the heroine). The boys, trust was broken, so now he is acting out all over the place and becoming a grade a juvenile delinquent. He looks older than his 11 years and his mom has her hands full. She has several things occurring at once…she will be losing job at the end of the month, her son is in trouble, Piers sent a letter letting her know he is divorcing her, and her aunt is ill and the Dr. thinks she needs to come to convince her to go to an old persons place.
She decides to take the train to her old home. After departing the train she sees Piers and thinks he is there to pick her and her son up. Then she realizes he is picking up his young chippy, Val. She is 23 to his 37(he thought the h was young when he married her and she was only 7/8 years younger at the time!) Anyhoo, the juvenile sees his mom’s reaction puts 2 and 2 together(his math skills are better than dear old dads) and runs to daddy telling him he is his son. It was an uncomfortable drive to the Aunt’s house with the 4 of them together. I’m sure after dropping off the soon to be ex and “son” the fiancée had a few words. But seriously, why did you get engaged to a man who hadn’t even started divorce proceedings…oh that’s right he is rich.
The hero goes to the aunt’s next day to terrorize the h and tell her he can’t wait til she Dies Goes and hopes to never see her again…divorce is still on(except sexual tension was alive and kicking and he almost kissed her).
The heroine was going to stay but it will be too difficult with daddy married to chippy and her son grumbling that it is all her fault he doesn’t have a relationship with good ole’ dad! She goes back to London. Son gets in trouble with the law shoplifting. It so happens that the hero is in town and checking in on the h and her son(no mixed signals here). The hero ends up taking responsibility for the heroine and her son to avoid serious charges, so here the heroine goes with her son back to the aunts.(but of course the hero denies the son is his and has no interest in the heroine, pull the other one….)
He introduces the son to mumsy and wants his young chippy to get to know the boy(it is your son you ass!!!)
In the meantime the kindly Dr. is showing interest in the h…the hero doesn’t like that, but he throws up the impending divorce and soon to be wife all the time at the heroine. So I have one word for him Shh!
Now the H has decided that her son(his too🙄) should go to his fancy boys school. So, the h goes with him to check it out. She approves and he takes her back to the manor house for lunch. She doesn’t have much of an appetite, and the H is grilling her about how she managed as a young, single mom.
.. “You had no need to be desperate,’ Piers exclaimed savagely. ‘For God’s sake, Abby, the money was there. Why didn’t you use it?’ ‘For another man’s child?’ Abby found she could be cruel too. ‘Oh, come on, Piers, I had some pride left. You were not going to deprive me of that as—as well as everything else..
She is like it’s time for me to go, but he insists they need to do some more talking, reach some civility, and maybe become friends…… .. “Friends!’ Abby was incredulous. ‘Not a month ago, you said you hoped you never saw me again!’…………………………………………..
“All right,’ he moved his shoulders carelessly, ‘perhaps I spoke recklessly. Perhaps I didn’t mean it.’ He paused. ‘Perhaps I resented the fact that you could still get under my skin.’ Abby’s lips parted, but no words came. She could only stare at him silently, her expression eloquent of her disbelief. ‘W—what?’ she got out at last. ‘What did you say?’ ‘You heard me.’ Piers spoke with some self-derision. ‘Yes—pathetic, isn’t it? After all this time I discover that I still want you.’ ‘You’re crazy!’ Abby made for the door, intent on putting as much space between her and Piers as possible.”(I couldn’t agree more Abs!!!!)
“him. ‘All I said was that I still wanted you, Abby. I do. But—’ he let her go, ‘I have no intention of making the same mistakes again.”(Oh Piers, you really are delusional honey!)
Piers gets called away for a few minutes and the h excuses herself to the bathroom upstairs, by the old bedrooms. The H happens upon her in his bedroom where she is looking at a framed photo of the future Mrs. Piers. She drops it when she becomes startled by the H.
He then makes more digs at her. Oh, he is cruel! He is purposely messing with her. So, Abby gets some of my respect when she decides to turn it full on for the H. The H gets very hot and bothered. END SCENE👏👏(or maybe not……) The sound of the bedroom door slamming echoed in Abby’s ears as Piers’ mouth ground into hers. He must have kicked it shut with his foot, she thought, tasting blood on her tongue as her lips were crushed against her clenched teeth.”
They argue some more. It is like an electrical storm in that bedroom, and then they succumb to their mutual desires!!! After the sex they do a whole post mortem thing. He is still engaged and planning on Germany with the fiancé’. She is still hurt and doesn’t want him anyway.
She walks into the aunts house: The aunt is all like, you were gone a long time. The h is like it was only lunch. At this point, I am pretty sure the aunt rolled her eyes at the h(the aunt knew the h was pregnant at the wedding even though the h had no clue!)
The story continues. The H is away to play. The h is stuck with her surly son who is waiting for his dad to return. Then they get a .summons..Invite to grandmama’s manor. The aunt in all her wisdom is like, that lady is up to no good.
Grandmama lays it on the line. She knows that the son is her true grandson, however, she will not acknowledge it unless the h goes away and leaves the grandson behind. She, the H, and the new improved mom can provide so much more for the little cherub. The h is like no. She really tries to fight off the grandma. But grandma says if she doesn’t do what she says then they will abandon the boy and tell him he is a bastard because his no-good mom slept with the local farm boy(yeah, but she didn’t). The h has 48 hours to comply. Then the Grandma goes to work on the grandson telling him he would like it at the manor and his mom should have a life of her own. The son is wondering if the mom is feeling saddled by him. She assures him she does not. The son finally shows some loving attitude to his mom.
The next morning, the son has disappeared. The h goes to look for him. He is in the car with the H(he has returned from Germany) The H tells the son to go in the house and pushes the h into the car. He tells her he explained the truth to the son. He tells her he is no longer engaged. He hopes she will forgive him because although he has had some sex over the years, no one has touched him like she has. Oh, and he never had sex with the chippy(even though he might have had she offered) The h is warmed by the fact that the chippy is not a threat and although she has lived like a num these past 12 years, she is over it because even though he kept his sword in top fighting form, he never gave away his heart. They do some heavy kissing in the car(while the son spies through the window). The h comes inside the house, while the H goes to take care of business(she told him about his vicious mommy’s evil machinations). She tells the son, there is no divorce. The son is excited about living at the manor house, the h…not so much. Then the kindly doctor comes to deliver the news that the H’s records were mixed up! The Roth family has had this same information for weeks(that would be grandmama, the H got tested in London and found that he had very viable swimmers). The little town(who has always sided with the h, which is unheard of) has already got the gossip mill going that the h and H are back together. The doctor takes rejection like a real champ. The H comes in as the good doctor is leaving(jealousy!!). The son asks about grandmama and he tells him that she will be living with an aunt…
... “No, I mean Aunt Elizabeth,’ he replied patiently. ‘You don’t know her. She lives in Australia. I’ve persuaded your grandmother that the hot dry air will be far more favourable for her health.’ ‘Oh, yes.’ Matthew was engagingly innocent. ‘You mean her arthritis.’ ‘Something like that,’ agreed Piers, looking into Abby’s eyes.” Now one can only assume that he told his mother where she could go and the first place was probably not Australia. He is also sending the sneaky Mrs. James with the mother. If Mumsy, should come back, she will be taking up residence elsewhere;……. They make arrangements for the aunt to have a live in. They plan to go to Fiji for a 2nd honeymoon with son in tow and the h wants to do up the nursery because there are going to be some future babies! They celebrate by having sex.
The emotional angst in this story was strong with this one. The hero is an ass, but I do believe he loves the h and he was 24/25when they were together the first time. We know that 24 in men years is equivalent to 15 in women years, so seen in a different light he was actually younger than the h at the time.
The son acted like an ungrateful brat to his mom. This was actually more believable to me then if he would have been passive and sweet. 1) he was told his dad died(not true) 2) he was never told why his dad wasn’t in his life 3) his mom was very young, there is no doubt in my mind she made mistakes with him, by giving into him when she needed to say no…there was probably a lot of overcompensating on her part for the loss of a daddy figure. We actually see some of this and the H steps in to correct the son’s behavior. However, we are also given glimpses as to how the the son loves his mom, especially in the end.
The evil MIL gets her comeuppance….even though it is off page. The h is clearly the winner. Not only did she thwart the MIL’s attempts to marry off her once, but twice!!! Plus, the MIL has lost all respect from her son and has been basically banished to Australia which is almost a 24 hour flight!!! Plus, Australia is where they used to send convicts. Sweet Justice prevails!!!!
As I said at the outset, I have a sweet little spot in my heart for this one. I can imagine when I first read it I was most likely surrounded by Duran Duran and Rick Springfield posters. Ahh, the memories!!!
Once again another classic harlequin that wouldn't have happened if the people in the relationship would of shown more trust in each other, it was kind of sad and angst ridden but pretty good.
My thoughts: SPOILERS GALORE The title of my review says it all... I super skimmed reading it. Maybe it was the story but as I started reading it normally and getting into the story I began to feel bad for Abby. I mean 12 years of her estranged husband not supporting her and her son!!! And him not believing that was his son! I kinda hated him, because how could he, you know? I mean, yeah, I guess his stupid mother was evil and deceptive and yes, I guess if you thought you were sterile, of course you can't believe and all this other reasons which made Piers not think Matthew was his son, but still 12 years - that sucks 0_0 And yeah, I know he is a man so naturally, he did other girls since they were separated/estranged, (he said so in the book, but he says never the way he was with her) BUT WHATEVER!!! He still cheated!!! He should have been a man and divorced her if he was gonna do that. Eh, I guess I dont like the story. He sucks for not believing her and Abby sucks for making it drag that long. They should just have divorced each other. 12 years, man and a kid involved. It's not right they dragged it out that long. I think Anne Mather's other books were better. I'm off to read the next one. I borrowed loads of them from my library.
I know I probably shouldnt like it but I was hooked from page one in this book.. I havent read a good HP (old or new) in quite awhile and was pleasantly surprised with this book.. They didnt even talk much, were only around each other 4-5 times throughout the book, he was a jerk and the kid was a punk (Dear me I dont know what I would have did with that kid) but I really liked it.. I do think there wasnt enough with the ending. They found out the truth and the end.. I would have liked his mommy-dearest (boy was she a mean one) after the truth came out.. I would have liked a bit more interaction between Abby and Piers as well but even without it was really good.
I remember this being very angsty, but that's about all I recall from it. I adore the cover though, it's one of the few romance novel hero's on a cover I actually find attractive.
I never forgot this because it was one of the first M&B (HQ) romance books I have ever read when I was very very young at an age that I was still supposed to read children`s colored picture books. Maybe that`s why I have never forgotten this. Reread was as great as the first time. Except this time I was little disappointed with the ending. Heroine was too fast to forgive. As soon as Hero said that he found out the truth (finally after 12 miserable years for h) she was all hearts and all over him she didn't even allow him to apologize properly.
Good read,it was full of angsty but would have loved it if Abby would have been shown more stronger.Piers was a jerk through the story. He was forgiven way too easily, would have liked it see him grovel to gain Abby's forgiveness and love but as always i was disappointed. After so much of pain, humiliation and seperation they get their HEA.
3.5 stars. Pretty classic older Harlequin, with an unforgivable hero who is forgiven. I don't love stories where the hero and heroine waste lots of years apart -- here, 11 years I think -- and I don't like sons who are sullen and horrible to their mothers, but still, a decent read.
So hero and heroine separated twelve years ago due to a toxic mother, some impotence and cheating drama. This hero has ignored his son for 11 YEARS. This child then grows up to be an ungrateful, rude, criminal teenager who is basically verbally harassing his mother in 1/2 of the book, and wants his absentee father. Most of the story is the heroine moving homes, we barely get any interaction between hero and heroine apart from drama around 80% and bam theyre back together.
A terrible husband and child tied like an albatross around the heroine's neck to a point she wishes she didnt survive childbirth? Yikes.
This poor heroine, just getting screwed over, manipulated and guilted by EVERYONE. No one is on her side. No one wants to help her or see things from her perspective or understand her feelings. Considering what a stubborn person the hero is, its surprising that he believes what other people tell him about the heroine. Don't get me wrong his 'proof' is pretty solid, but he was dumb not to double check. But the kid was a real jerk. He never appreciates his mother and acts like a bully. Heroine is the only redeeming character/thing in this book. I'd suggest skipping it.
How everything AM write pricked my temper I don't understand. Reminds me next time to not read anything from this author. Why are all the characters simple-minded I don't understand either .
This book was a good angsty read. The relationship between the mom and 11 year old son was realistic and I like that the author showed that. Not too many scene with the main couple. The mother-n-law was evil. Didn't see OW really at all. Also thought she forgave him too easily for all those years of separation that could have been done and over with if only he and she had more sense.
The angst was good. The book started strong, especially with the meeting at the station. I had some problems though. First I wasn’t impressed with the plot. I read few books with the same motive- the H thinks he’s sterile after Mumps. Never mind that nowadays it would be resolved quickly but the whole error with the fillings at the hospital that they could admit after more than twelve years... Then there’re all those years apart. Twelve years is a long time to try to go back especially when the H was involved with someone else. If the heroine didn’t come back they would continue to live separate lives. The ending was not entirely satisfying but I liked that the mother in law was dealt with. The writing was engaging and hard to put down.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The man and wife are separated for 11 years. He is engaged to marry another woman. Really? I would think more of him if he had divorced before asking another woman to be his wife. He has denied the paternity of his son and accused his wife of cheating because he is supposed to be sterile. Um I think if he loved her he would have gotten a second opinion before he finally did 11 years later. In the end the dude tells her he hasn't been a monk while they were apart and that he would have had sex with his fiance if that was an option. So I guess adultery is acceptable if you are separated? Or is it acceptable if you are a male. Not in my book.
Shortly after they were married she found out that she was pregnant. He kicked her out and called her a cheater. He then said that he was sterile. She wasn't able to convince him and left. Now twelve years have past. She gets two letters. One from her aunt who is in need of her help. And him. He wants a divorce so that he can remarry. I didn't like the H in this book. He was a pompous jerk. He had no trust in her. Accusing her of cheating. He knew that he was her first. Now his son wants to know him. The son has gotten into trouble both at school and the law. I have read many AM stories. And this will be added to my to be reread file.
Abby couldn't deny Piers' statement. Time had certainly proven that true, but the young Abby had loved him with all the passion within her.
At that time she could not have foreseen the awful events that had led him to deny his own son. Abby had done the only thing possible: she'd fled.
For twelve years she thought she hated Piers, and then he came back into her life. Try as she did to fight it, she realized hopelessly that she was as vulnerable as ever to his attraction.
One of my all time favorites.. The angst on this one is crazy . I usually hate long separations but this one was needed for the story I guess, and it was handled very well. The fact that they were still married helped.
