I first read this book as a Readers Digest Condensced Book...one of many in my parents' bookcase. So I was either a child or a young teen. I may have read it more than once. The story stayed with me for several reasons: I was fascinated by names, and the "hero" had more nicknames than anyone I'd ever met; the dysfunctional family story was compelling. The book had been on my mind a lot lately, but I couldn't remember the title. I found a listing of all RDCBs online and combed through until I recognized the title. Then I search for a copy online and was able to locate a used copy of the hard-cover--not listed here in Goodreads.
Shockingly enough, the book lived up to my memories. Not one hundred percent--the "heroine," who is the point-of-view-character, is annoying. The "hero" is shallow. But the things that stuck with me all these years will continue to stick with me. I'm glad I hunted down a copy.
