Even if it was published in 2012, nearly 6 years ago, the YALSA was ahead of their time specifically with the technology based references they were using in this book, which admittedly was very refreshing.... The book not only focuses on: importance of summer reading, outreach/marketing, displays, programming (both staff run and passive) and evaluation….BUT...it also focuses on why the teen audience is so important, including teen space, reader's advisory to teens, and going out to the community to meet and know our teens.... it offers up a lot of creative ideas for programming (not just traditional book groups and craft programs) but other cool stuff THAT has been done and been successful after-hours and themed varieties like Harry Potter, LOTR, SW's, Percy Jackson, Marvel, etc. The book is more geared towards singular libraries, smaller branch systems that don't have an established regular SLP or don't have the funds as it does offer up suggestions for garnering prizes, community business outreach and grants...
It told me how to set it up but not what to set up. I'm still looking for a book that takes into account all that research that says to keep reading programs about reading and how to set up a culture of reading in the summer reading program.
