Stepping Lightly: Simplicity for People and the Planet

Rate this book
While the voluntary simplicity movement has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, it is still often stereotyped as being mainly concerned with a thrifty lifestyle. But simple living has much deeper implications than just cleaning closets or selling off a second car. In "Stepping Lightly," Mark Burch considers the deeper rewards of voluntary simplicity for individuals, and how the practice of simple living can be an essential part of the solution to our social and environmental problems. Thoughtful and eloquent, this book will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in committing themselves to stepping lightly into a more sustainable future.

This is a book I originally had to read for school that I skimmed. I went back and re read it and I enjoyed it a lot. I thought it had some great things to say about living simply without guilting you about your carbon footprint, which stops the the text depressing and hard to read. One of my favourite parts about it was how it talked about living simply in variation. This was super optimistic for my to read because it gave me a lot of information about anti consumerism and climate action. I loved the personal stories in the book paired with the academic side to it. The writing style is light and easy to pick up at any chapter. Would definitely read again.

This was a really interesting book with lots of good ideas and insights. I read it over a holiday weekend and I think that I will have to go back and read it again, much more slowly and carefully.
