At first I thought this book was going to be filled with gory scenes that most stories of this genre had. I'm glad I was mistaken.
I really enjoyed reading it. I like it because it has a great sense of mystery, a touch of adventure, paranormal stuff and factual research all rolled into one novel. While there were a few rough spots, the novel—as a whole—proved to be a splendid read and kept me highly entertained. A good page-turner!
Note: I received this book from the author and have written my honest opinion about it. This short book review for this novel has initially been posted on Shelfari and on a virtual book retailer.
I really enjoyed this book, the story was unique and the characters were very well written and you could connect with them. I would thoroughly recommend it. However, the one thing that let this book down for me, was the formatting/kindle. Now this might be an issue of the kindle but it really did let the book down. For example, there were line breaks every two or three lines much of the time, though there were some longer paragraphs. Now if bob was speaking at the end of the three sentences there would be, Dianne said for example. But then there would be a line break and then whatever Dianne said would be written. For much of the book I had to go back and reread the sentences because I was getting confused as to who said what simply because of this. The at other times the sentence would jump to a line break then have a couple of words written. Editing wise, I think it really does need some work, in one place Dianne went to Baker and Bob was called Wilkinson which seemed a bit odd. However, although this did detract and let the book down it was still an incredibly interesting read. The story focuses on ideas which go into the German history. But the twist is intriguing and the story is incredibly well written. I would recommend this book simply for the story. Hopefully the editing issue gets resolved because the book really deserve to be read and the author has done a very good job.
Disclaimer: I received an e-copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I found this book to be really interesting, and it was definitely different from anything else I've read. We've all heard rumors and stories about Nazis, Hitler, what they were really planning, etc., but this story actually delves deep into what I'd like to call the mythos of that time and beyond. Jane Wilkinson, journalist, stumbles upon some crazy happenings while in Germany for an architecture book, and that's only the beginning. It gets a little "out there" at times, but I couldn't wait to keep reading more about Vril, the Thule Society, and so forth. There's supernatural aspects, history, a little romance, conspiracy theories, and the list just goes on and on. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next one, because I want to see how the story continues, considering there's a little cliffhanger at the end. Great concept!
"The Vril Codex" by Ben Manning is an unsual and to me a highly original read. While the main protagonist is a widower and tries to overcome his grief with a work trip to Berlin, the plot edges into paranormal area and sheds light on some supernatural cult around Hitler and his hardcore followers. I have read quite a few stories and articles about it, all handled as rumours, but their existence is so persistent that the plot - speculative conspiracy as it may be - sounds very plausible to me. The book is well written and held my interest throughout. The most pleasant aspects of the book are that the characters are so real and believable, more dimensional and that the storyline is far from flat, as I find so often with books in the genre. I found it a compelling and fascinating read.
The Vril Codex is a great read. I think you will enjoy it as much as I did. Jane and Bob are likable characters with an interesting dynamic. When Jane goes to Germany to start a project on the architecture of Germany she sets in motion a series of events that will forever change her life and her beloved's. Bob follows Jane to pick up where she left off and attempts to uncover the secrets Jane left behind for him to investigate. This book takes the reader through a suspenseful journey of secret Nazi subculture and Satanic ritualism. The story is multi-dimensional and thrilling.
Ben Manning wrote a story with a tightly knitted plot!
With a touch of romance, tragedy and loss the story takes the reader to Berlin.
Modern Berlin is a hubbub of the arts with a progressive youth that is in stark contrast with the Berlin of Nazi German. The contrast should be stark and in certain aspects it is though the true ethos of the book lies in the fact that we as a people have not learned our lesson.
Conspiracy theory and secret societies abound this book is reminiscent of Dan Brown. Detail and a workable hypothesis adds a level to the plot while psychic abilities and curses overlies the detail to add ever more to the story.
This is a book that I would not have passed by in a bookshop. And I would not have been disappointed.
What I loved the most about this book is the fact that the author includes several plot lines interwoven and make it work expertly in one continuing page turner. The fact that the author did all this whilst building up characters shifting from modern to gothic is a testimony of his research and his surety of the subject of the book.

Jane and Ben are not just husband and wife, but soul partners. They have a special connection that nothing can break not even death. Jane is a well known journalist and photographer. She goes to Berlin to start a book on the wonderful sites and architecture.
Jane has become fascinated with an old mansion, dark Gothic looking with Gothic towers and a English style giant gate. Jane is soon caught up with the mystery of what goes on behind the dark walls. What secrets does it hold ?? What happens when Jane is intrigued and wants photo's ?? Getting inside the house is not as easy as one would think and once Jane opens a door it unlocks a series of events that changes everything . . . . .
The Vril Codex is a wonderful read ! I was caught up with the history of Germany. Secret societies, cults and a little voodoo is all any reader needs and this one has it! Also can not forget the romance and the thrill rides it will take you on.

This work takes place in modern day Berlin with flashbacks to 1930s nationalism. The religion of the Thule Society led by Helena Hister sets the backdrop for the paranormal interaction of Ghosts, Demons, and revitalized old maniacs. I don’t want to give any more spoilers but rest assured, Nazis enamored of the cult of Thule are responsible for pretty much all of the worlds ills.
I enjoyed the construction of the story though at times the pace felt almost pushed. Editing really does need another pass for misused and missing words if nothing else. There are moments when Helena is monologuing that could be built out to bring the reader a larger understanding of how Vril empowers her goals. This is not my normal genre but I will give it three units of satisfaction.
