文言和白话，实物是古已有之，名称却是近几十年来才流行的。两个名称相互依存，互为对立面：因为提倡照口语写，所以以传统为对立面，并称作文言；因为一贯用脱离口语的书面语写，所以以革新为对立面，并称作白话。文言，意思是只见于文而不口说的语言。白话，白是说，话是所说，总的意思是口说的语言。两者的内涵和关系相当复杂，以下分章节解说。
