Interestingly the focus switches to two rival stand up comedy pairs.

It's finally time for Wara-Ko to begin! All the contestants are waiting in line and Onizaki overhears Azemichi and Taiyo saying that they're going for number one! He silently admonishes them in his head before we meet Wara-Ko's emcees. This volume was very different from the previous two, since it focuses heavily on the performances of Azemichi and Taiyo's competitors, so most of the volume is seen through the perspective of show's emcees and Sprechchor. In fact, Taiyo and Azemichi don't appear in this volume until the end when they perform their act. The main players of this volume don't perform until the second block of Wara-Ko. In the greenroom, Sprechchor overhears Azemichi and Taiyo practicing their Eco-Bag Routine which only proves to them just how naive the boys are. After the first block ends, the contestants in the second block are put on stand-by and during this break, we hear the audience members talk amongst themselves on who they think is going to win. Most think that Sprechchor is going to take the cake, but it seems like the audience is already bored of them, no matter how good they are. Since Sprechchor is so popular, most people have seen their routines and know exactly where it's going from the start. When they go on, it starts out as a pretty typical manzai routine with Onizaki as the funny man and Jun as the straight man. It's their old reliable, but halfway through the routine they flip the script. Suddenly, Onizaki is the straight man to Jun's funny man and they reveal that every routine they've done up until now has been set-up for this routine. Before we see the end of their act, we transition to Jun and Onizaki's backstory. Before going into high school, the two decided that they wanted to be comedians and win the Wara-1 Grand Prix, but because of Onizaki's physique, he gets scouted for the Baseball Team. He starts getting bullied by his upperclassmen, which leaves him no time to practice comedy with Jun. Seeing just how horribly his friend is being treated, Jun challenges the rest of the Baseball Team in a fight over Onizaki. Jun says that if he wins, Onizaki gets to quit the Baseball Club, but gets his butt kicked. Fortunately, Jun filmed the fight and used it as blackmail against the Baseball Team to let Onizaki quit anyway. Jun promises Onizaki that whenever they go on stage, he'll smack his elbow in hopes of weakening it, so there's no way he can play baseball again and says that they can be the best comedy duo in Japan if they stick together. We get to see the end of their set, which is a huge hit with the audience. They know for a fact that they've won this competition and while walking off stage, they hear Azemichi say to Taiyo that they're going for number two. Next up is Kirameki Confections, also known as 'the Stage Crushers'. Two years ago, the only reason why Sprechchor lost the Wara-Ko was because they went after Kirameki Confections, which is the same stage order that Azemichi and Taiyo are in this year. Their routine starts out as a general manzai act, but quickly devolves into something else. It becomes a slap-stick manzai combo and it makes a killing. Since their act is so different from regular manzai, it completely ruins audience expectations for the next group and causes a drought of laughter. The only reason they haven't won Wara-Ko is because they have the same routine each year. The audience reaction is huge and Onizaki overhears Azemichi telling Taiyo that they're going for number three. We also get to see Kirameki Confections backstory. Basically, they were teaching kids about exercise, but one of their students got sick and needed surgery, but was too scared to go through with it. Wanting to make him smile again, they make a deal with him, saying that if they win Wara-Ko, he has to get the surgery he needs. That was three years ago and even though they've never won Wara-Ko, the boy got his surgery anyway and is now happy and healthy, but they are determined to win, so they can keep their end of the deal. Their set ends and Azemichi tells Taiyo that they're going for number sixteen and Onizaki finally confronts them about resigning themselves to last place before they've even performed, but Taiyo reveals that they haven't been talking about which rank their aiming for. Since the last time they performed, Azemichi and Taiyo made sixteen separate routines to choose from based on how the audience is feeling. They head on stage as the final act. Unexpectedly, their routine is a hit with the audience. We see that they increased the density of their jokes by putting all of the setup at the beginning of their routine and just as their wave of laughs is at a crescendo, Azemichi forgets his final line. Oh, my God! My heart dropped when I realized that Azemichi forgot his lines. As soon as I finished this volume, I had to look up when the next volume comes out because I needed to see what happens next! I still think the fact that this story is in the manga format takes away from a lot of the joke's impact, so I really hope this gets an anime.

Comedy routines & backstory.
That's it.
That's the book.

The senpai from the previous competition have their backstories shown (hazing's bad y'know), and the surprise twist to their routine IS kinda refreshing since sometimes you're just used to characters being assigned their roles and them leaving it at that. But they are performers and sometimes they have to be whatever it takes to get the big laughs.
The new weirdos for this competition have...and interesting routine. Let's just say that some people are good at being tanks for punishment. Also, their tragic backstory is hilariously short and is not even their driving motivation anymore.
And our intrepid duo finally realizes that Batman's secret weapon is PREP TIME! They came up with scenario after scenario to find the right skit depending on the state of the audience after the action weirdos did their bit. Props to them, but what a cliffhanger! (not really. We kinda expected something like that to happen eventually based on the shy nerd's character)
Who knows how they'll recover from that!

As the duos go up to compete in the manzai competition, characterization and backstory are unveiled for the performers which shows the depths they are willing to go to for their routines. This is especially true of the leads, whose determination is unveiled as they witness the competition in action. This is the last volume I will log as I read the chapters available on the Shonen Jump app, and I am excited to see where this story will go as it has been an absolute joy to discover.

You know when you're reading (or watching) and a character gets introduced and there's this instant feeling of "That one. That one's my favorite." Yeah, I got hit with that right about page 10 and I don't even know the character's name.

But we're kicking off the Wara-1 Koshien! (Manzai Championship) The one to watch is Sprechchor (we get their backstory so enjoy some feels) and the one to fear is Kirameki Confections. Good luck, One-Way.

this series is so fun!! it's really interesting to read about how another culture views comedy, how jokes are set up/told, and what is considered funny to them. i imagine this was extremely hard to translate, and the jokes don't always land, but everyone's having such a good time, it's hard not to love them.

I didn't like this one as much as the first two books in the series. It seemed more concentrated on the different comedy performances, but none of them were funny to me. I don't think it transfers well into text.

solid decent, still not grabbing me like other niche performance style manga have yet, but I'll give it one or two more at least
