Your friend Neely, who's an amazing dancer, invites you to sign up for ballet class. Ballet seems to come so easily for her, but it's not so easy for you. If you work hard, will you ever be as graceful as your friend? Or will you follow a different beat and find a few moves of your own? The choices you make could lead to some embarrassing moments in the bright spotlight or to discoveries about the real ways in which you shine.
Into the Spotlight is a solid, mid-rank InnerstarU adventure. The dance details are interesting and won't exclude readers who are unfamiliar with performing arts, and there's a good range of interesting paths the story can take. The messages/lessons in this particular book aren't always the clearest, and there's a bit too much of telling the reader how they feel about what's happening, which is weird, but readers should still be engaged. There is one odd bit where the main character gets compared to a bouquet of "exotic" flowers--not sure how to feel about that.
Re-reading this after roughly ten years, I was just as pleased with it now as I was then, for many different reasons. For one, although I did not forget that I was reading, I felt, as I chose my story and went down one path after another, that I was really there. Second, I loved how the book indirectly showed that one little decision can lead to completely different outcomes. Third, the characters included those with all sorts of personalities and ethnicities. Fourth, the characters' names were hard to remember, but there were pictures and brief descriptions of them at the beginning, almost like a glossary. Fifth, the illustrations were gorgeous.
The only problems were that, first, the book encourages you to follow your heart. This can be good, if you follow your dreams and do what you absolutely want to do and adore. Sometimes going with the flow doesn't make you content, and often trying to fit in leads to negative outcomes. However, the Bible says the heart is deceitful above all things. Second, although the illustrations are, like I said, beautiful, they look suspiciously like American Girl dolls the publisher wants you to purchase.
If you are a Christian, you may want to discuss the idea of following your heart with your parent or child, but overall, the book was fantastic.
3.5 stars. I lose myself in the American Girl Innerstar U Choose your Own Adventure books. I’m just disappointed that the website with the other choices is not up anymore.
Yes, a little young for me, but I got this when I was doing my first dance recital and I fell in love. I could read this over and over-- and each time I get a different ending! <3
