A great way to start the year: read a well-written, Scripture-saturated, and confessionally Presbyterian study of the Person and work of Christ. This little book is a helpful lay-level treatment of Christology, intended for use in personal study, Sunday School, or small group settings. Particularly well suited to recent converts wanting help to organize the biblical data concerning Christ, this book is also a helpfully accessible compendium of Christological material for believers wanting a “refresher course.” Dr. Pipa has done an excellent job in this book of weaving together historical, biblical, and systematic theology for popular audience. I heartily recommend this for use in church Sunday school curriculum, or for personal study.
Designed as a 13-week Bible study on the person and work of Christ, it's too bad Pipa's The Root & Branch is long out of print. It would be fuel for an excellent group study, but it functions just as well for personal study.
The chapters outlining the doctrinal brickwork laid against heresy can be a little dry to the modern reader, but this is all solid and important stuff. The book launches from the paradox of Christ being the "shoot and branch of Jesse" (father of King David) while also being "the root of David." Pages 9-15, on this, alone are worth the effort of tracking down the book. Also, the concluding chapters, and the chapters on Christ's 3-fold office (Prophet, Priest, King) are great; Chapter 8, "The Great High Priest" is especially edifying.
Clear, simple, sound. A really useful resource. Could be used as a great high school level study guide, but beneficial to anyone else as well. The clarity and simplicity are particularly helpful, a nice reprieve from dry, boring tomes of theology.
