"The Contessa held out a slender hand, brown skin over bone. The IV taped to the outer wrist. Her nails were still perfectly polished except for one finger they'd cleaned off to check her colour."

I first read this book when it was published in 1979. Picked it up at the train station to pass the time on the journey. I remember enjoying this book very much at the time and a couple of scences have lived rent free in my brain ever scince.

From time to time it crossed my mind to read it again but I'd leant my copy to a collegue and never saw it again. A couple of years ago I came across a reprint which has been sitting on my bookshelf waiting for the right moment. I finally picked it up to read a few days ago and I've had a good time. I had forgottten the main story plot and most of the supporting cast so it was like reading it for the first time.
