Loosely based on a teenager's diary from the 1980s found in a gas-stationbathroom, Unlovable is the remarkable story of Tammy Pierce, as filteredthrough the pen of Los Angeles artist Esther Pearl Watson. This boxed set collectsthe complete, acclaimed two-volume saga of Tammy's sophomore year ofhigh school in 1989.Tammy has built a devoted following over the last several years in the pagesof BUST magazine, where Unlovable continues to be serialized on the magazine'sback page, and this beautifully produced, slipcased collection features all832 pages of her sometimes ordinary, sometimes humiliating, often poignant and always hilarious exploits. Her hopes, dreams, agonies and defeats are brought to vivid, comedic life by Watson's lovingly grotesque drawings, filled with all theeighties essentials -- too much mascara, leg warmers with heels and huge hair, etc. -- as well as timeless teen concernslike acne, dandruff, and the opposite sex (or same sex, in some cases). Unlovable addresses the mysteries of adolescencethrough Tammy's naivete; girls and women in particular will find much that resonates, but men will also relate to Unlovable'suniversal humor and wide cast of characters. Tammy's life isn't pretty, but it is endlessly charming and hilarious. This complete edition will be handsomely packaged in an irresistibly sparkly box that would make Tammy proud.
My friend Amy put it best when she said "I feel like I'm reading one of our notebooks from junior high!" It's true. I related to every silly boy crazed scenario and the young, emerging artist drawing style. The story was appropriated from a found diary, and my only complaint is that I wanted to know what happened in some situations and she was already bouncing on to the next big drama. I am going to recommend this to all my non-reader friends in hopes that they will start to love graphic novels as much as I do. Hooray Esther Pearl Watson!
I purchased this on a whim because of the interesting premise and devoured the whole thing in a flash. This series perfectly captures all of the obsessions, exaggerations, awkward moments, and intense emotions that comes with being a teen. I laughed. I squirmed. Long-buried, painful memories of my own childhood floated to the surface. I laughed some more. A unique read - glad I picked it up!
Esther pearl Watson has made it onto my list of top five favorite graphic novelists. Right up there with Alison bechdel. With a beautiful box set that includes glitter details, I am in love forever. Thank you lord for this hilarious gift.
