This is the prequel to the Star Wars Rebels 3D animated television series. Unlike the Clone Wars which premiered on Cartoon network and continued on Netflix, Rebels was on Disney XD and was thus geared more towards children. This has lead to Star Wars Rebels being criminally underrated in Star Wars lore, because the characters and the Ghost starship are absolutely amazing. The former Jedi Kanan Jarrus and the Twilek master pilot Hera Syndulla are lovers who act as parents to Kanan’s 15 year old Padawan Ezra Bridger and 16 year old Mandalorian Sabine Wren. Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios, a former Lasat Honor Guard plays the role of eccentric uncle, and I’m not entirely sure where Hera’s beloved droid Chopper fits into the family dynamic but he is awesome! This novel is great for adult fans of the show because the plot is complex and it deals with mature themes that would have been glossed over in the television series. This is also one of the few Star Wars novels to take an in depth look at the economics of the Galactic Empire and how captains of industry sought to curry favor with Emperor Palpatine.
When Kanan met Hera…a meet cute in a galaxy far far away…
A New Dawn: Star Wars by John Jackson Miller tells the origin story of how a former Jedi padawan in hiding and a twi’lek rebel scout crossed paths…and how it changed their lives forever…
Set an unknown number of years before Star Wars Rebels…the action is set on a minor mining world that is of interest to the Empire’s war machine…attracting both a Rebel spy with eyes on the baron administrator…and drawing in a local freighter pilot trying to survive…
There’s not a ton to the story but Kanan and Hera eventually meet…hit it off…work together…and realize they are gonna be with eachother for the long haul…
None of the other Rebels characters pop up (making one hope for a future story showing how others join…as well as their notable ship)…but the interactions with young Kanan and young Hera are pretty golden even if spread out…
As a fan of Rebels, this book is such a cute meet cute of my favorite Star Wars couple. I expected more Jedi action and more romance...sequel PLEASE?!??
