Things Go Wrong For Me: when life hands you lemons, add vodka

Rate this book
Things Go Wrong For Me (when life hands you lemons, add vodka) is a memoir of sorts, a roadmap of Rodney Lacroix's haywire life thus far. From his childhood, through the raising of his own kids, to his vasectomy and post-divorce world ... this book is more than just a culmination of outrageous stories woven into a cohesive narrative, it’s a testament for the "little guy."

In this case, literally. Rodney is 5’3”. He’s very little. Almost tiny. Bank tellers offer him lollipops. He makes holiday money wearing green stockings and fake ears.

But even though he’s small in stature, his stories and the laughs that accompany them are definitely BIG.

There's no doubt, if you enjoy snorting milk through your nose, and you're drinking milk right now ... you're going to love this book.

Things Go Wrong For Me… details Rodney’s unfortunate mishaps in life. From his childhood, through marriage, divorce, dating and a vasectomy. Described in pictures and words this is a humour book with a difference.

Things Go Wrong For Me… is an amalgamation of Rodney’s blog posts put into book form and I expect his long-term readers will be familiar with most or all of them. This book is pretty funny, very clearly Rodney does not take himself seriously. At all. He has an engaging voice and describes his embarrassing situations with verve. And very bluntly with down-to-earth language.

It is short, approaching 30,000 words, but is padded out (not in a negative way) by a plethora of drawings, diagrams, photo’s and text boxes to illustrate Rodney’s off the wall thinking, like his ‘Cyndi Loppers’, Lacroix’s idea for an improved tree trimming experience . It’s broadly broken into four sections – fat childhood, parenting crap, dating disasters, and the vasectomy diaries.

I particularly enjoyed the toboggan episode, the dating section, and a series of ‘draw somethings.’

Very funny in parts, but not for me drop down hilarious. However, humour is a relative thing. I’m sure many people would spend most of the book laughing out loud. Well worth a look.

I started following @Moooooog35 on Twitter a few months ago because someone re-tweeted something he said and he seemed funny. I like to follow random funny people. I hope some of their wit will rub off on me. Because I only pretend to be funny.

So Rodney (That’s his real name. I didn’t know he had a real name.) wrote a book called Things Go Wrong For Me and I decided to give it a read. It was on sale for $2.99, so what did I have to lose? Besides almost $3. And the time it took me to read it.

I let it sit on my digital shelf for a while because I had more important things to do. I don’t know what they were, but I’m sure they were very important.

I finally read it. And I read it in two days. I would have read it in one day, but I got busy doing other important things.

I’m sorry Rodney. Feeding my kid and going work are slightly more important than reading your book. Please forgive me.

Turns out, the book was totally worth the almost $3 and the time it took me to read it. Dude is hilarious. Way funnier than he is on Twitter. I laughed until tears rolled down my cheeks.

This memoir-of-sorts is filled with little vignettes from his life, from his childhood as a fat kid, his vasectomy, and his life post-divorce. The childhood story about the toboggan is probably the funniest. There are pictures and diagrams and really crappy drawings that add to the ridiculous humor of each story.

I really don’t want to say a lot, because if it’s unexpected, it’s totally funnier.

I didn’t know Rodney has a blog. I just knew his humor from Twitter. There is so much more hilarity to ensue.

Want to laugh until you pee your pants? Read this book with a full bladder.

What laugh a lot but still be able to control your bladder? Read this book right after you pee. Or, better yet, while you’re on the toilet. Totally makes sense.

Offended by vulgar language or pictures of male genitalia with smiley faces? Don’t read this book.

——————————————-

I bought this book with my own money and then wrote a review because I honestly really liked it. The opinion expressed is entirely my own because I’m a big girl who can make decisions all on her own thankyouverymuch.

AMAZING BOOK ... and I'm not just saying that because I edited it. There's a reason I was involved with this book, because Rodney is one of the funniest people I know. If his book was a person, it would be the second funniest person I know.

This is a must-read if there ever was one. There's something for everyone: from how to shave your pubes (read: manscape) to how *not* to ride a toboggan.

If you get nothing out of this book, at least get this: ball smoke.

This book is an extension of Rodney's hilarious blog, so if you've read and enjoyed his blog you will definitely love this book. It's amazing how you can laugh so hard at the stories of a fat kid inadvertently trying to kill himself on multiple occasions and at a grown man shaving his balls. I read this in half a day because I couldn't put it down and because PICTURES! So it's perfect for people with short attention spans AND people who like to laugh. I think that's pretty much everyone in this day and age. So basically it's perfect for everyone.

This book is hysterical... a laugh-out-loud book. I carried it around for a few days and was caught several times laughing in public. I also annoyed several friends reading things out loud and showing them pictures. Nothing is better than a good laugh, and you will get many reading this.

Sometimes you just need a good laugh-out-loud book to read. While cruising around the blog-o-sphere, I came across the blog Mental Poo. Yes, you read that correctly. A blog that is described as "Jerking off your funny bone, one post at a time." While laughing and trying not to pee my pants at the blog posts, I came across a link in the right hand sidebar to purchase the book. I laughed so hard with this book.

Author Rodney Lacroix touches on some subjects that shouldn't be funny and turns them into a work of comedy art. I am talking about things like Chocolate Ex-Lax episodes, Sex Game Dice, and Vasectomy. Yes, he even laughs at himself while undergoing the knife in the sensitive area. While some men would cringe at a puff of smoke coming from below, Mr. Lacroix finds the humor in it. Plus, I will never look at a raisin the same way again. To understand why, well, you have to read the book.

Included in the series of topics, we also get illustrations that the author created as well. A diagram becomes a tool of laughter. I loved the chapter and pictures about the popular app "Draw Something".

They say that laughter is the best medicine and I can honestly say that I am feeling like a million bucks after reading this. Tears ran down my face and I might have received funny looks from my family while reading it. This is one book that I will be reading again when I need a pick-me-up laugh and a blog that I have bookmarked so I can continue on in his journey of parenthood and life.

Oh my gosh.
This book had me laughing from the beginning! I have to admit, I was all, "Is it gonna be THAT good? Am I gonna have to LIE because I sort of know Rodney?" (what. reading his blog and friending him on facebook totally counts as deep friendship.)
Thankfully, I did NOT have to lie! This book was hilarious! I think? When he was a kid, he was the boy version of me. Only I never shit my pants and had to ride my bike home in it. I believe I walked.
Things really DO go wrong for Rodney...but he's not bitter. Nope, he's funny as hell!
Underneath it all you can tell he loves his kiddos which is a nice thing to see as a mom.
But that doesn't mean he isn't going to get a few pot shots at em...which is okay because, frankly, they're going to give him hell as they get older.
They have his sense of humor, he says, and you know what? He'll probably deserve some of it.
Also, next time I accidentally hang up on my husband I'm going to say I ran someone over...AND I am looking for a corn cob pipe. I feel the need to ship Rodney one.

This book does need to come with a warning...

Do not take this book out to read at lunchtime in public or read it on public transport as people will look you like you are the crazy cat lady from the Simpsons - yes it does make you laugh out loud and shake your head in "amazement", good amazement or bad amazement I am still trying to figure that out.

From Fat Kid to renowned blog author, Rodney Lacroix shows people a side of his life that really couldn't belong to anyone but him. Join him on a journey of childhood, parenting, vasectomies and more.

This book made me laugh out loud and help get me through the frantic time leading up to Christmas and I am sure that I learned a lot more about Rodney than I ever wanted to know LOL

Things Go Wrong For Me is a very funny book. I actually found myself laughing out loud in parts and there are very few books that have caused that to happen. My favorite line had to do with who the Easter bunny is, but I don't want to give it away here. I read the book over the course of one day. I couldn't put it down. It's not for everyone. And it's definitely not for children. If you are an adult with an offbeat sense of humor, then I think you would enjoy this book.

Lately I have ADD when it comes to reading, but I read this one in a day. Anytime you can get a good laugh out of a book, I am all for it. The fun ride through Rodney's childhood was my favorite.

Humor is one of those subjective things that can never please everyone -- what one person finds hilarious someone else might find boring, confusing, or even offensive. I enjoy many types of humor, however, so it's hard to find a humor book that doesn't appeal to me. And Rodney Lacroix's book "Things Go Wrong For Me" is a wildly inappropriate yet side-splittingly hilarious read, one that had me laughing until I nearly peed myself multiple times.

Rodney Lacroix has a wicked sense of humor, and nothing is sacred from his lampooning -- his kids, his family life, his diminutive height, even his manhood. His stories cover his childhood as an overweight and fairly unpopular kid (including such incidents as mistaking Ex-Lax for chocolate and using his science kit to blow up a shed), his misadventures in online dating (and his creepy fake "hot girl" profile that inexplicably got a LOT of responses from desperate men), and the perils of getting a vasectomy ("watching smoke rise from your crotch is an interesting experience").

Rodney's somewhat foul-mouthed and uses a LOT of innuendo and potty humor, so do be prepared for that going into this book. Also, my edition of the e-book included quite a few pictures -- including a couple pictures of a man's, ahem, family jewels. If this kind of thing offends you, look elsewhere for your humor.

Despite some risque and inappropriate content, "Things Go Wrong For Me" is incredibly funny, and a nice pick-me-up if you're feeling stressed or down. Keep on trucking, Rodney...

I tried my best and continued to read on hoping to find some redemeening qualities in this book. I never did. The reviews sounded good and I was looking forward to a fun read. However, all I could think was how selfish & unappreciative this man was for all he's been given and what an ass he is to brag about kids being terrible (including his own) and how his favorite thing in life is to lie to them & hopes his son gets a "hot" therapist later in life when he needs one. He's simply a jerk who never has grown up nor had anything bad truly happen to him in his life. If he considers these crappy stories a bad childhood, he REALLY needs to get out and talk to people & his parents did a great job of protecting him.

Stop your whinning, grow up and get a pair! I took the bus across town at the age of 6 & walked on my own! I also had a lot more severe crap go on than be fat and have issues in the snow dude & I have more gonads than you!!!

On her podcast, Aisha Tyler has all of her guests tell a story of a self-inflicted wound. Quite often, Self-Inflicted Wounds is the funniest part of the cast, with stories of terrible awful things that people have done to themselves. (hint: Jon Benjamin's was the funniest)

Rodney Lacroix's life is one big self-inflicted wound. These stories are all detailed on his blog (Midget Man of Steel), but I suck at keeping up with blogs, only managing to check in occasionally. It was nice to sit and read a lot of his stories, particularly the ongoing and hilarious epic drama of his vasectomy.

Being short never stopped anyone from being funny. Thankfully, Rodney Lacroix only grew to a tiny 5'3". If he'd grown any taller, he might not need to compensate for his short stature with a giant funny bone.

I didn't know what to expect.
I stumbled across the fact that Rodney had a book coming out a while ago, and popped it onto my Kindle for iPad once it was released. One night, I tucked myself into bed and decided to give his book a go before falling asleep.
From the start, I was laughing so hard the iPad kept bouncing up and down. I was actually laughing out loud. His drawings, his dating profile, his humor...fun and fantastic.
He is a bit twisted in the head, yet you can tell he's a great dad and totally safe human being. A perfect combination.
I believe you don't have to be a fan of Rodney online at MidgetManOfSteel or stalk him on Twitter at @Moooooog35 to enjoy this read, but you probably will get right on that once you finish this book.
I highly recommend Things Go Wrong With Me to all my friends, and anyone else who will listen.
Get this.

Rodney, better known to his blog devotees as Moooooog35, truly marches to the beat of a different drum. He's like a cross between Don Rickles and Andrew Dice Clay with a little George Carlin thrown in for goo measure. Oops that was a typo. I meant to say "good". But it's also kinda Freudian and you'll find out why in the hilarious vasectomy section of the book.

I obtained this book for free during a Kindle promotion and let me say it was worth every penny! Just kidding, I actually would have spent money on this. How much remains to be seen. Just kidding again.

You want a good laugh? Get this book. It's got a good beat (26 times apparently) and I can dance to it.

After following moooooog35's blog with lots of laughter, I thought I'd check out his book. It was filled with more of the same, the toboggan story was one of the best. The vasectomy diary went on & on & on with entirely TMI on his nuts (pictures included) and masturbation for me. Granted, I could have just quit reading but I like to finish a book once I've started. I had read Jenny Lawson's "The Bloggess" Lets Pretend This Never Happened, and perhaps I was expecting something as funny..it was funny, but no comparison.

I've been a long time reader of Rodney's blog, so naturally I had to buy the book. So far this weekend I've been flipping through it reading stories at random ... I'd have finished it sooner but I get all excited after reading for a little bit because I keep getting up and running to my husband, book in hand, squealing, "YOU HAVE TO READ THIS PART ABOUT MOOGE! WAIT I'M NOT DONE READING!" and then take the book and run back to my the couch laughing for a while before I pick the book back up.

Fusion comic book, record of stand-up sketches and some off-colour gags in a somewhat autobiographical non-framework. I don't think I am the 'audience segment' for this book which, in my opinion, needs a lot more original funny about it in order to appeal to habitual comedy readers and a lot more story for the MOR reader. But I liked the drawings ... though I did wonder whether all the visuals were cleared for copyright.

There's no denying Rodney is a funny guy - his stories about growing up as a fat kid and the various way he mentally tortured both his parents and kids (equal opportunity pest) were hilarious and punctuated with crudely drawn, but snorty-laugh drawn (that's a term, look it up) pictures that made the book fly by too fast!

As usual with Rodney I found myself laughing like a crazy person, my kids asking me what's so funny and me having to tell them "I can't tell you". This is a must have for any man that will be having a vasectomy. What man wouldn't want the gift of big jiggling belly laughs post snip-snip?
