John R. Rice, the Captain of Our Team

by Viola Walden

Dr. John R. Rice was the captain of his college football team. ‘Whatsoever he did, he did heartily,’ and in later years he became, under God, what many called the Captain of the team of the independent evangelical fundamentalists. He founded and for 46 years edited THE SWORD OF THE LORD, “America’s Foremost Revival Weekly . ” He led great citywide campaigns where hundreds were saved. Out of these campaigns, local churches were founded. Some are still vibrant testimonies for the Lord in their locales. Dr. Rice truly did become a legend in his own time. God sent revivals through his prayers and efforts in a time when people everywhere were saying, “It can’t be done. " God honored his stands for truth and righteousness when such positions meant the loss of friends, financial backing and humanly influential connections. God opened doors for him when it seemed as impossible as crossing the Red Sea. You will be blessed and challenged and your heart will be warmed as you read of the tears and compassion Dr. Rice had for lost souls. So much like the Master’s heart, John Rice’s also beat for sinners. His life was consumed with a passion to win them to the Savior. And he did win multiplied thousands, and thousands are still being won throughhis works that live after him.
