I have always loved anything having to do with Disney and found the pictures and the background information about Walt Disney very interesting. The book chronologically represents each decade of Walt Disneys life.
While not a straightforward biographical text, this book offers more insight to Walt’s life since it is almost completely made up of primary sources; quotes from the man himself. The editor, Schroeder, provides the main text and has worked in the Disney Company for over 25 years.
This book begins with a forward from Disney’s eldest daughter, Diane Disney Miller. In her introduction she explains growing up with a famous father who was a popular driver in her school’s car pools. Despite his reputation as a class clown, Miller remarks how her father was also “very serious” about his work and that everything he did had a purpose.
The book is full of black-and-white, behind the scenes photos of Disney from his early years growing up in Kansas City and portraits of him as a young man as he started his first animation company with his brother Roy. Hard lessons learned from being tricked by his distributors lead Disney to vow that he never again work for someone else. Each page spread is decorated with photos and multicolored quotes. In the backgrounds we are provided with sketches of Disney’s famous creations from Pinocchio to Tinkerbell.
I think this biography about Walt Disney is very eye catching and interesting. It uses an array of pictures to describe his life, as well as, descriptions about his life throughout the book. One of the most interesting things I found out about while reading his biography was that many of his life experiences and happenings were reflected upon in his Disney movies. Many deeper meanings of his characters and creations actually portrayed his real life. Walt also involved himself in EVERY aspect of his productions. From story development and the selection of songs, to scene layouts and character animation. He's an amazing artist and every child should learn about him because he is the brains behind many things children enjoy.
Walt Disney is definitely one of my Creative Heroes who's made me believe in make-believe. This visual biography is a breezy read full of photographs from the Disney archives and quotes from the man himself from his early days and then divided into decades- with an introduction by one of his daughters. It reminded me how hard work and a dream can lead to a beautiful life. How fortunate we are to have enjoyed (and continue to do so to this day) his stories, his films, and his magic!
I read this one with my daughter who was researching Walt Disney for a school project. It was fantstic. Tons of pictures, minimal writing. What writing was there was interesting. A good read for anyone interested in this amazing man, but especially great for kids who'd rather look at pictures anyway.
I have read many Walt Disney books, they are my favorite. This was a very light read, with some photos I had not seen before. It is mostly made up quotes (wonderful ones) and snip its of his life by 10 year increments starting in 1920s to 1960s. Wonderfully done. The sketches in between the writings and photos are fun.
Great biography on the life of Walt Disney...it is told mostly through photographs and actual quotes by Walt. His is a wonderful story of tenacity, determination, and not giving up when the going gets tough. Great man! Fun book to share with my kids.
Arranged by decade and includes 178 photographs which makes it a wonderful compliment to the many Disney biographies which have far fewer photos. One of Walt's daughter's, Diane Disney Miller, wrote the introduction.
This book was truly amazing I am one to sit for a long time and look at pictures from Walt Disney so this was a very good book especially for my interests. When I started this book I was seeing pictures that I have learned about but never seen pictures of.It would be great if Russell could write another book with even more picture people have never seen before! Great book - Thanks!
