A Midnight Masquerade

Rate this book
At the Midnight Masquerade, hearts and affections may be revealed . . .

In this collection:

A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns
Arthur, Lord Claremont finds himself unexpectedly in need of an heir, but loathes the idea of putting himself publicly on the Marriage Mart. When a masquerade provides the opportunity to survey the crop of eligible ladies whilst in disguise, he cannot resist. Phoebe Cartwright was forced to live with her aunt during her mourning for her father. Unfortunately, it was during the Season when her cousin was to make her debut. Fearing competition, her aunt tries to keep her hidden away. However, when her cousin becomes ill, Phoebe finds herself pretending to be her cousin at a masquerade. Arthur finds his ideal bride at the masquerade, but appearances can be deceiving.

Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson
A duke’s ultimatum carries power. James Holbrook and his fellow lords in London have one more ball before they must tow the line and find wives, wealthy wives—One more chance to be frivolous, to flirt, to outrageously flaunt themselves about without a care until the dawn when they can never do so again. With masks on, everything will be done in complete anonymity. And even though James has reservations about such a jaunt, he agrees to at least keep the others’ secrets.

Meredith attends the ball with great trepidation. How will she see through the duplicity of the marriage mart and find a man sincere enough to marry her for who she is? She doesn't expect to. And she doesn't expect to fall for one at her first ball, without even knowing his name. How will the two navigate the ensuing weeks of secrets, misunderstandings and prejudice to eventually fall in love without their masks on?

Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon
When Charles Ballam returns from war, his former commander, Doughty, is determined to see him happily wed—the least he can do after Charles maimed his hand saving his life. The first attempt leads to a humiliating spectacle involving Charles’s injury. He’s loath to ever attend a ball again. Doughty convinces him to try a relatively new, scandalous method: lonely hearts advertisements.

Mr. Amesbury doesn’t approve of such things, but that doesn’t stop his daughter Clarissa or her companion, Mary, from reading them secretly and then strolling past meeting places in hopes of finding the individuals mentioned in them. When an advertisement with striking details appears, Clarissa is certain that the man behind it is one she could have a love match with. She answers, suggesting they meet at an upcoming masquerade. But identities aren’t what they seem, and her future happiness—or spinsterhood—may rest on the man who placed the advertisement . . . or on his mate, who assumes his identity. Instead of being the man of her dreams, he may be nothing more than a deception.

About the author

Elizabeth Johns

Like many writers, Elizabeth Johns was first an avid reader, though she was a reluctant convert. It was Jane Austen's clever wit and unique turn of phrase that hooked Johns when she was "forced" to read Pride and Prejudice for a school assignment. She began writing when she ran out of her favorite author’s books and decided to try her hand at crafting a Regency romance novel. Her journey into publishing began with the release of Surrender the Past, book one of the Loring-Abbott Series. Johns makes no pretensions to Austen’s wit but hopes readers will perhaps laugh and find some enjoyment in her writing.
Johns attributes much of her inspiration to her mother, a retired English teacher. During their last summer together, Johns would sit on the porch swing and read her stories to her mother, who encouraged her to continue writing. Busy with multiple careers, including a professional job in the medical field, author and mother of small children, Johns squeezes in time for reading whenever possible.

A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns 2.75⭐️ A cute Cinderella story that was in need of a smarter heroine and a less abrupt ending.

Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson—DNF. Anachronisms, a weird premise, and the author’s failure to grasp the peer system did me in.

Masquerade a la mode by Annette Lyon ⭐️⭐️⭐️
The best of the lot. Liked how the author slipped in references to William Hogarth’s Marriage A-La-Mode series. Still, the storytelling was a little flat and the hero bland except for his self-pity. I skimmed most of the story.

I love this Georgian collection! Each novella was well written and from three authors whom I have read several of their books and keep going back for more! I loved how they all talked about the clothing and the wigs and social structure and the different social engagements of the time! I'm so grateful for these collections, no matter what era they're written in, because I know I can count of the content being clean and books I can happily share with anyone!

~A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns~ 5* ~
I loved the intrigue and "deception" that played out during this novella's masquerade. These two characters in finding each other multiple times really played into serendipity! I loved Arthur's mom and his friend so much! They were great advocates of his in finding Phoebe! And the fun connections and twists and turns in this one kept me turning the pages quickly and smiling while doing so!

~Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson~ 5* ~
This one was fun as the two main characters were able to meet each other with no expectations of being anything other than themselves. And that they were able to fall in love without knowing the others' social status or monetary value. There are some mishaps, some that had me laughing, and others had me hoping all would turn out for the best for these two! I really enjoyed it. Especially when our heroine overhears this group of Lords talking about solutions to their problem of having ultimatums from their fathers to marry for money. Delightful and one I will be returning to!

~Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon~ 5* ~
This one was fun and definitely a storyline that was a little more unique in the characters reading the loney hearts advertisements in the newspaper. Oh the scandal!!! *shocked face* Clarissa and Charles both try their luck and play a little switcharoo on each other. I loved how it all played out. *sigh*

Content: Clean. All three novellas were delightful and had nothing more than some kisses. No language or violence.

I received a copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

A Double Masquerade:

Awe this was such a cute masquerade/Cinderella vibe story!
Super short, and quick but still adorable!

We love a confirmed bachelor who falls for the under appreciated cousin of a girl in her first Season. And the masquerade just made it extra exciting!

Loved his mother’s hand in it too! She was a sweet character.

Their Masked Secret:

Cute story showing that love is all we need! Money, & status don’t always mean happiness.

Again, loved the masquerade scenes! And their first meeting before they knew who each other were. And when they found out.

All cute!

Masquerade A-la-Mode:

Sweet story of seeing someone for who they are, not their looks, title, or money.

I loved the advertisement bit and the connection the characters had over a story.

Loved their meetings and the ending was cute!

Overall, if you’re looking for some super fast historical romances with a fun masquerade twist this is it! They were short, sweet, and made me wish to attend a ball.

Three marvelous stories.
This anthology has three stories you will not want to put down. The first A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns, tells the story of Phoebe, an orphan, forced to live with her aunt, uncle and cousin, Fanny, who appears to almost be her twin. Fanny is now coming out and her parents are aspiring for an excellent match, when Fanny becomes ill. With the first ball of the season, a masquerade, in days, Phoebe is recruited to secretly attend as Fanny. All goes well until she catches the attention of Jonathan the Marquess of Claremont. What will happen if he discovers the ruse? Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson is second. James Holbrook (Jamie to his friends), the second son of a duke, Had been given orders to marry and marry for money to save the estate from his father’s mismanagement. Meredith or Merry, who’s father died protecting the Queen, has been given a title and large dowery in his honor but she wants someone who cares for her not titles or money. When Jamie and Merry meet at a masquerade they are drawn together but do not discover the other’s identity. As the season progresses will they be able to discover who it was who captured their attention that night? The last is Masquerade A-La-Mode by Annette Lyon. Clarissa and her maid entertain themselves by reading the “Lonely Hearts” notices in the paper. Soon they find themselves trying to determine the writers of the ads by visiting the businesses mentioned. Charles Ballam is back from the war but does not feel comfortable in society. He has a secret that drives most people away as soon as they discover it but his best friend insists and soon, he is attending functions trying to keep his secret hidden. When Charles and Clarissa see each other from a distance at a masquerade they are attracted to the other. However, before they can meet, they are separated. When they do meet his secret and misunderstandings keep pushing them apart. Can they overcome the challenges in their way? Three wonderful stories you are sure to enjoy. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

A Double Masquerade (5 stars) was my favorite of the collection, with Phoebe in the background of her cousin's Season while she finishes her mourning, a bit like Cinderella in how she's treated. The swap for the masquerade is fun for Phoebe since she gets to wear the beautiful costume she helped design, and participate in the dancing incognito. The banter between her and Arthur is sweet and sincere, and I loved that they are a perfect match for each other. I also appreciated that they were able to get to know one another in a natural way in the days that followed, strengthening the foundation of their love.

Their Masked Secret (3 stars) features the famed Vauxhall Gardens as the location of its masquerade, with Jamie being pushed into finding a wealthy bride, and Merry wary of fortune hunters. The premise was set up well, but I had a difficult time connecting with Merry and Jamie's insta-love during their little adventure. The ensuing hunt for identities afterwards was anticlimactic, but it was humorous to find them at odds with each other and then later so sappy.

Masquerade A-la-Mode (4 stars) had an entertaining twist- the couple finds each other through a newspaper advertisement! Charles is a wounded former soldier, and these heroes always melt my heart. His friend makes it his duty to see him happily wed, and they get a bit creative in their methods. Clarissa and Mary are both likeable ladies, and I enjoyed their friendship. They push societal boundaries a bit by reading the ads and looking for real love stories to unfold before them. When both sets of friends meet up to discover if there is potential for romance, their own stories unfold, but not in the way they anticipated!

Another wonderful collection from authors that I love.

A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns ~This fun story was my favorite. Arthur doesn't want to be seen in public as actively seeking a wife and decides attending a masquerade ball is the perfect way to check out the eligible ladies without anyone being the wiser. Phoebe finds herself at the same ball pretending to be her cousin Fanny who's confined to bed with measles. When Fanny is no longer ill and Arthur comes to call, he wonders why her disposition is so different--it's like she's a different person than the one at the masquerade ball. With a little help from his mother Arthur finally gets his Peacock (aka Phoebe). Arthur and Phoebe are so adorable together and I loved Arthur's mother and his secretary/friend.

Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson ~James (aka Jamie) is ordered by his father to find a wealthy young woman to marry to save their estate. He attends a masquerade ball with friends as a last hoorah before they have have to be married. Meredith (aka Merry) is new to having a title and money and worries how will she know if a man truly cares for her or just her money. I liked that because of the masks and not telling each other information that would give away their identities Jamie and Merry get to know each other with worrying about their social standing or her dowry.

Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon ~Charles is back from the war and his good friend is determined to help him find someone who will make him happy and he talks Charles into placing a lonely hearts ad. Clarissa thinks she's found her love match when she reads the ad and it's arranged to meet at the upcoming masquerade ball. With Charles, his friend Doughty, Clarissa and her companion Mary all wearing masks and pretending to be each other there are mistaken identities and miscommunications. It was fun to see the couples meant to be together gravitated towards each other even though they were pretending to be their friend.

Go back in time to the Georgian era with pannier dresses, gloves, bonnets and powdered wigs. Each novella is a complete story. You can read the stories one at a time or the whole book at once--it's up to you. These are sweet romances with just kisses.

A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns

Phoebe and Lord Arthur Claremont are so cute. Phoebe goes to a masquerade as her cousin. Lord Claremont goes to find a wife. I liked watching them try to figure out who each other were and falling in love.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson

Jamie and Meredith’s story is adorable. I really loved the proposal scene at the end. Super romantic.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Masquerade A -La-Mode by Annette Lyon

Charles and Clarissa
Charles lost part of his right hand. They meet briefly but then decide to use advertisements to find each other. This leads to crazy confusion. Very cute story!

I listened to the audiobook version and thought the narration was good.

This collection was one of my favorites! Masked balls, secret identities, and romance of course.
Jen Geigle Johnson set up such a cast of young men all under orders from their fathers to marry and marry a fortune by the end of the season under threat of disinheritance. I now want all of those stories!!! I was delighted with the one happy ending she wrote, but I’m curious about all of his friends now.
I adored Arthur and Phoebe in A Double Masquerade! They had loyal friends and a fairly honest relationship. I loved seeing their romance unfold!

This was a very enjoyable trio of stories, as the Timeless Collections always are. I loved Elizabeth John's Double Masquerade with Phoebe having to stand in for her look-alike cousin. She still enjoys herself and is able to find a match to make her happy. Jen Geigle Johnson's Their Masked Secret involves Merry and Jamie, both seeking love and not just a mercenary match. I especially liked that the men all wore matching disguises and wondered what happened with the rest of them. Annette Lyon's story involves advertisement answering as well as a masquerade. Clarissa and Charles AND two others may find true love despite miscommunication and some switching around.
Overall very good, clean romance, definitely keeps with the Timeless series. You can't go wrong with these books.

What a fun collection of mistaken identity! All are set in the Georgian era around a masquerade ball but each with a unique story.
A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns has a Cinderella vibe where Phoebe pretends to be her sick cousin to gain suitors. There is a little bit of mama matchmaking too.
Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson has a group of friends needing to find wives to keep their inheritance. Although a sweet encounter and a boat ride makes a love match for one couple.
Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon starts with advertisements in a newspaper and ends with both partners switching places with friends to judge the person’s character.
I really enjoyed each of these stories. They are perfect falls reads and the perfect length for a quick but full story.

I adored this collection of stories all about secretive and mysterious masquerades.

Arthur and Phoebe had such a delightful first meet, and subsequent meetings, in A DOUBLE MASQUERADE. I love how the fox and the peacock came together in such fun and ingenious ways.

THEIR MASKED SECRET reveals a group of young lords who must find wives and they are so frivolous in their attempts. James and Meredith endure so many adventures through misunderstandings and secrets, and theirs is a sweet and entertaining story.

The lonely hearts advertisements played such an interesting and unique role in MASQUERADE-A-LA-MODE. The tangled up twisty turns were so amusing and Charles and Clarissa get swept up in the chaos.

These novellas are sweet little diversions and it was so much fun to dive into a world of secret identities, balls, romance, and more.

Content: mild romance

"A Double Masquerade" was cute. I liked the storyline.

I could hardly believe "Their Masked Secret." I think the plot itself was okay, but there was absolutely no relationship development--it went from Merry having (very valid) concerns to a complete 180° without more than a passing comment. It was ridiculously unrealistic.

Masquerade A-La-Mode was probably my favorite of the three stories in this book, and I liked learning about artwork I hadn't heard of before. I did think that Charles was more self conscious than I'd prefer in a hero, but Clarissa seemed okay with him. I liked that it was about regular upper class, not peers.

Content: I don't recall any profanity. No sex.

I will update after each story.

A Double Masquerade by ElizabethJohns- 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
The plot was a very creative, interesting, and the characters were well-written. Nothing complicated, but entertaining.

The Masked Secret by Jen Johnson- 🌟 🌟 🌟
Typical plot of hero needs a big dowry and heroine wants to be loved for herself not her dowry. It had promise, but a little dull at parts. The ending came quick and was a bit too mushy and over the top.

Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
Sweet story with likable characters. Implied happy ever after.

Book and audio review!

About: Three novellas that take place at a Masquerade (hence the title folks). All so incredibly enchanting with that air of mystery and it’s a great addition to the Timeless Series.

Characters: Strong female characters and men who have that brooding yet wanting to get married for love vibe.

Authors: these authors all paint a perfect ballroom where the reader feels just the right amount of believable intrigue without one of the characters being a complete dolt. (I’m looking at you A Cinderella Story ) Each a unique tale about taking a chance on what’s behind the mask.

Narrator: Kim Bretton reads this book and she has such a lovely accent. It’s easy to listen to because the authors really do a great job walking us around the room and meeting the characters.

Take away: Some novellas leave me with an unsatisfying conclusion . Each of these stories left me with that little sigh of contentment for the HEA.

What you should do: Attend the nearest masquerade ball and find a corner to watch the drama unfold. It will be worth it. Grab some snacks.

I received a complementary audiobook but a positive review was not required

These three novellas were easy to read and completely delightful! I loved each and every one for different reasons. A Double Masquerade was enchanting! I loved how the two fell for each other and didn’t even know who the other was. Phoebe was so sweet and good, her character was the kind you cheer for. Their Masked Secret was fun and funny all at the same time. I wasn’t sure how this one would pan out when all of the gentlemen were being forced to marry and for money. Meredith wasn’t sure how to know who to trust when there were men out there just wanting her for her money. Their Masked Secret was delightful and a feel good story. Masquerade A-La-Mode was a unique take on the masquerade ball. I really liked the different perspective that Lyon took with a character returned from war with a deformity. It really showed depth of character in the story and trying to overcome what the ton would say about such a thing. If you love regency novels or masquerade balls then this is the book for you! I received a complimentary copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed the newest collection in the Timeless Romance Anthology Collection! These collections always have a fun theme the stories are centered around and I loved the theme of a Masquerade ball in this one. The hidden identities, meeting, and falling in love while dressed up at the ball was just so much fun and made for some unique plots. One of the things I love best about the Timeless collections is getting introduced to new authors, which I had the pleasure of doing here. These stories can be binged in one sitting or read individually between other books. All three of them are quick and sweet, well written stories.

Double Masquerade was my first book by Elizabeth Johns. Phoebe had to stand in for her look-alike cousin. Phoebe was super sweet and I love how she is able to find her match at the masquerade ball. This one was so much fun!

The Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson: This was another new author for me and this one was my favorite of the three. It gave off all the Cinderella vibes. Jamie was being forced by his father to marry for money but he only wanted to marry for love. He spends the masquerade ball falling in love with Merry. Merry wasn’t sure who she could trust after hearing several gentlemen at the ball talking about how they needed to find a woman with a large dowry. The story had such a beautiful feel good ending.

Masquerade A La-Mode by Annette Lyon. I have read a couple stories from Annette before and enjoyed them so I was excited for this. This one involves answering an advertisement and a masquerade ball. I loved that this one had a disabled hero who had returned from the war, it brought so much depth to this story. There was some miscommunication that happened up until the very sweet ending.

All three of these stories were sweet and clean and very romantic. Highly recommended to lovers of historical romance.

A Double Masquerade

This is a delightful Cinderella-esque remake. I'd never read anything by Elizabeth Johns before, and am thrilled to have read this! Fox and peacock, indeed.

Their Masked Secret

This novella was so good, and I was enjoying it very much until it was nearly over. Of course, everything had to wrap up, and a novella isn't a lot of time, but it was just so sudden and kind of left my head spinning.

Masquerade A-La-Mode

This was a fun little read (that also had me looking up beauty patches, but that's totally beside the point). I always enjoy reading books that have the characters returning from war. That aspect just makes things a little deeper, I think. It was fun "listening" to Clarissa and Mary read the advertisements together and imagine what the people must look like. This wasn't insta-love like so many novellas, and I really liked that.

I love the setting of a masquerade ball. Secret identities allow for so much fun and misunderstandings. All three stories had elements that I thought would make a great romcom. You could even combine all the stories into one movie following the four couples. I think it would be very entertaining.

I especially enjoyed the unexpected twists and turns these stories took. It made for great anticipation as to how they were going to overcome the obstacles created by their deceptions and be able find their true loves. I wasn’t disappointed. All three authors are very skilled in fabricating such clever plots.

This anthology was pretty good! One of my favorite parts of regency romances is the banter, and this collection definitely has that. I also enjoyed this anthology's figurative language, feminism talk and gender-flipping, funny meddling, and fun incognito-ness of the masquerades. My only real complaint is that some of the stories ended too abruptly! You get all drawn in, and then they still don't quite feel like enough, haha.

My favorite of the stories was Elizabeth Johns'. I liked the almost-Cinderella-meets-the-Princess-and-the-Pauper-retelling (just with slighter kinder relations, thankfully), the fashion design inclusion, and the idea that finding someone both rare and refreshing yet somehow familiar means something.

In Jen Geigle Johnson's story, I enjoyed all the lively spontaneity and humour.

In Annette Lyon's story, I liked how it was almost like an entertaining regency edition of online dating meets Sleepless in Seattle and Rupert Holmes. I also related to Mary's character, liked the inclusion of a veteran with a disability, and appreciated the dialogue about just how fast and difficult old maid-ism and finding real love were back then, especially with the gender double standard in place. It was also fun to see how smart Clarissa and Mary were at reading closely between such few lines in newspaper advertisements. Although in the case of Clarissa reading Charles', you could say that her intuition was also a fate connection.

Overall, it's a very good addition to the Timeless Romance/Georgian/Regency/etc. series, and I would recommend it to fans of romance in this time period!

This anthology series is one of my favorite regency anthologies to date. Each story was so immersive and enjoyable that I devoured the entire anthology within hours of getting my hands on it.

The mystery that surrounds a masquerade is intriguing enough, but dressing up in costumes that hide your identity is always a treat, especially as we are currently in Halloween season. The freedom of dressing up like someone or something other than yourself is so fun, especially when your inhibitions lower, and things you never thought could be possible suddenly become possible. It’s in this spirit we find three entertaining stories that all surround a masquerade.

The collection starts off with A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns. I was instantly smitten with this story but really fell in love when Phoebe chose her costume, which just so happens to be one of my favorite creatures. The secrecy of the masquerade ball and how obvious fate was in the meeting between Arthur and Phoebe was nothing short of magical. Everything about their relationship is unconventional and I am here for it! A play off of Cinderella, A Double Masquerade is teeming with wit and charm as we see a peacock and a fox play a game of cat and mouse in this utterly charming novella.

Every single moment of this story was my favorite part and I didn’t stop reading for one single second. Can a fox and a peacock find love? You’ll just have to read it and find out!

Next is Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson. This novella starts out with a very cute premise and my heart instantly went out to poor Jamie. Who would ever want to marry out of duty when you can marry for love?

Jamie and Merry’s story has a lot more romantic moments that had my swoony heart going pitter-patter. Their first meeting is so sweet and simple yet at the same time holds so much fire and meaning. A very powerful connection binds them to one another, so much so that neither really understand it themselves.

This was such a wonder story that I loved it so, so much!! If I had to choose a favorite of the three I believe this would be it. It truly has it all and I fell so hard that I wish this could’ve been a full-length novel. When it ended I was not ready for the magic to end!

The third and final novella is Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon. Sadly, this was my least favorite of the three, though it still was a fairly charming read. In this novella the masquerade doesn’t start out at a ball but in an advertisement for Lonely Hearts, which is an interesting premise, especially for the time period. The author was able to work a masquerade ball later into the story in a very creative way, which I quite enjoyed, and it got better from there.

This novella had more of a sweet and subdued feel to it, which was opposite of what I was expecting, but overall it’s a cute story that I did enjoy.

I must end this review by saying just how much I love this series! It gets better and better with each volume and I am living for it. This is how an anthology is supposed to be written! It is chock full of likable characters, masquerade mix-ups, and love compounded. What more could you want?

Overall Review: A new edition to the Timeless Georgian Collection, A Mightnight Masquerade is a great collection of sweet stories all with the theme of a Masquerade ball. I love these collections because it's a great way to find new authors and get a taste of their work. I enjoyed all the stories in this collection and found each to have a unique plotline, despite the fact that they all followed the same theme. A little shorter than a novella, these three stories were well-crafted and enjoyable. This collection is a light-hearted, quick read, that can be enjoyed in one setting. And with its clean content across the broad, readers of all ages can enjoy it.

A Double Masquerade - Elizabeth Johns
Rating: 4 / 5
Synopsis: When her cousin falls ill, Phoebe is persuaded by her aunt to take her cousin's identity for the first ball of the season, a masquerade, which should make the switch easy to pull off. Phoebe makes a splash and gains the attention of many bachelors- most of all that of Aruthur Mill, a solitary Marquess and catch of the season.

Thoughts: This story gave a little bit of a Cinderella vibe, but was still original and even funny in some parts. I loved the little moments of irony and the romance between the main characters. I appreciated that both had independent personalities and loved the slower reveal of identities.

Thier Masked Secret - Jen Geigle Johnson
Rating: 3/5
Synopsis - A group of bachelors are forced by their fathers to marry a wealthy woman before the season is out. They decide to attend one last ball and have the time of their lives before the season begins in earnest. Jamie is determined to marry for love but must marry for wealth instead. He must find a wife soon, but can't stop thinking about the woman he met at the masquerade.

Thoughts: I enjoyed this one and found the plot to be interesting. This story had a true feeling of ‘instant-love’, with both characters really hitting it off during the masquerade. Jamie and Merry were both sweet characters in their own right, but I would have liked a little more of Merry. An overall cute read.

Masquerade A-La-Mode - Annette Lyon
Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: My favorite one out of the three, this story features Charles, a scarred soldier who returned home from war, Clarissa, an intelligent and romantic miss hoping to find a love match, and their loyal best friends who would do anything to ensure happiness. Things get complicated when Charles’ insecurity brought on by his scars leads him to ask his best friend to switch places with him for the masquerade.

Thoughts: I loved the premise of this read! It had great depth and good character development despite its short length. Emotional and sweet, I loved the connection Charles and Clarissa had from the start. This was also the most believable of the three in terms of not recognizing the other person and the pacing of the romance. I was totally invested in the story. Really, this is one that I would love to be made into a full-length novel.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

2.5/5 stars. Easily my least favorite anthology I've read from the "Timeless Romance" series. I thought that having fewer stories would mean more time for development, but all it meant was filler - lots and lots of excess filler.

A Double Masquerade - 2.5/5
This was contrived but not overwhelmingly so. It was okay, I don't really have much to say about it.

Their Masked Secret - 1/5
This one broke me. I have too much I need to say because it made me so unbelievably annoyed.
•Why would a group of rich and powerful men be so concerned with their "spare" sons finding rich wives? That in itself isn't weird, but they all got together to force this idea onto their children and threaten disinheritance was just odd to me.
•The first 2/3 of this story dragged much too slowly for me. I just wasn't interested in the mind games everyone was playing or the distress the main characters felt at being unable to find someone "different".
•Merry's father saving the Queen felt...a little contrived. I highly doubt the Queen of England - any Queen of England - would have "less than the usual amount of servants" as she gardened. Did the royal family even garden? Wouldn't that be beneath them? The point is the entire scenario felt unrealistic, but I'm not a historian, so I could be wrong.
•The Prince of England just casually showing up to a party? That's a hard no.
•The three creeps converging on Merry and trying to trap her into marriage came out of nowhere and suddenly that was the big climax of the entire story. I'm sorry, what? Where did they come from? Plenty of people saw one of them force himself on her and rip her dress, is that not enough evidence to save her reputation? It didn't even matter in the end, Jamie was going to propose anyway.
•How convenient that Jamie's father wanted him to be with Merry. And how convenient that Merry's basically royalty now. AND HOW CONVENIENT THEY MET AT A MASQUERADE AND FELL IN LOVE RIGHT AWAY. There are only so many of those I can handle.
•I cannot believe this ended with "and then everyone clapped". Why would you want to end your story with a meme people use to mock something?

Masquerade A-La-Mode - 3/5
Annette Lyon's writing isn't at its strongest, but this was probably the most interesting out of the three. I had fun researching Marriage A-La-Mode so I understood what Clarissa and Charles were referencing. I wouldn't have minded this one being longer, I was invested enough in both relationships and I wanted to see them develop a bit more.

A Midnight Masquerade (5 stars)

A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns (5 stars)

A young lady in mourning is made to go to a masquerade disguised as her cousin, who is ill. A duke, reluctantly, but under the obligation of starting to hunt for a wife, goes to the self-same masquerade hoping to find a woman with whom he can hold a decent, non-insipid conversation. He finds what he is looking for and she doesn’t feel nearly as attracted to or as comfortable with any of her other partners. But both leave before the unmasking.

They’ve each found an enchanting partner, but will he be able to locate (and recognize) her? Will she know him if she meets him? Let the hunt begin!

Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson (5 stars)

Merry meets Jamie at a masquerade at Vauxall and is instantly attracted to her, as she is to him. The problem is that Jamie, Lord Holbrook, has been commanded by his father to find and marry a wealthy woman before the end of the season. (As have the fathers of all of his friends.)

Merry has recently come into a title and a fortune and is extremely wary of fortune hunters, yet she thinks that Jamie might be the man for her (or possibly a cad). But is he her masked man?

Neither had unmasked within the sight of the other, so they have to navigate their way amongst the ton and hope to find one another, somehow.

The Regent, Prince George, steps in, plays a little game on all fortune hunters, then sets everything to rights.

Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon (5 stars)

The “Lonely Hearts” and “Once Seen” sections of the newspaper off evening amusement to Clarissa and her companion, Mary. Until Clarissa decides to respond to one. Then events develop!

Charles, with a disfigured hand from the war with the colonies, and his friend and battalion commander, John, are as close as brothers-in-arms should be. His friend talks Charles into placing an advertisement.

Charles happens to put something into his advertisement that Clarissa recognizes from literature and she replies.

It’s a lovely romance with some twists and turns along the way. This story was my personal favorite of the three. But the each had their own appeal.

Another delightful Georgian collection from Timeless Romance Anthologies! When I’m short on time, I love picking up these anthologies knowing I’ll be able to finish a well written novella in one sitting. This book delivered three intriguing tales all centered around a masquerade.

A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth John’s was my favorite! After his heir dies unexpectedly, Arthur realizes he must take a wife. Not wanting to alert the ton to his new status, he dons an elaborate fox disguise to check out the prospects at a masquerade ball. Phoebe is asked by her aunt to pose as her cousin who’s sick with measles. She dresses in a beautiful peacock costume & soon finds herself the toast of the ball. Arthur is immediately attracted to her & goes to great lengths to search her out. I loved this Cinderella like story. It was fun to see that instant attraction develop into more as they keep “bumping into each other” at various locations.

Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson is the story of James “Jamie” Holbrook & his friends, a group of second sons given an ultimatum by their fathers to settle down. Meredith or Merry is a new heiress & worries men will want her only for her wealth. Through a series of humorous mishaps, these two get together not knowing much about the other. This was a fun read with plenty of fun shenanigans.

Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon is the touching romance of wounded soldier Charles Ballam who follows his commander’s advice to place an ad in the lonely hearts advertisements. His ad catches the eye of Clarissa Amesbury who’s determined to meet him at a masquerade ball. Their meeting doesn’t go smoothly though with a few mishaps, misunderstandings, and switched places with friends. But, the happily ever after is well worth it. Charles was an endearing character & while this had a more modern feel, I enjoyed the story & romance.

All of these novellas are set in the Georgian time period & are another fabulous addition to the Timeless Romance Collection. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

“But I wish you to know, no matter what happens in the future, I shall remember our moments together. I shall guard these feelings and your goodness as a fond memory to remind me of the goodness still left in the world.”
💛
I loved imagining the balls throughout the stories in this collection- the beautiful dresses and decorations, the stolen glances across the room, and the searches for true love at the heart of them!
💛
In this collection, you will find first a story of two people who are planning to attend the masquerade, both of them needing a disguise to meet potential suitors, for two very different reasons. I really loved Phoebe and her humility and kindness despite her circumstances. I also thought Arthur made a delightful leading man, in the way he sought to seek out his "swan" and pursue her though society would look possibly look down on their match.
The second story opens up with a group of guy friends who discover they have one season to find a match before facing consequences from their fathers. Looking at the masquerade as one last hurrah, James finds much more than he bargains for- a lady who makes him actually desire to get married!
In the third story, we find a woman whose hobby is to read the Lonely Heart listings in newspapers, and finds herself the subject of one! Both her and the man she corresponds with are fearful of being seen and exposing themselves to ridicule, but if they find the courage, could they possibly have found their true love?
💛
This is a wonderful Fall read and each story felt like a perfect length to savor in the busyness of the season!

Treat yourself to the allure of masquerade balls and romance in A Midnight Masquerade, where love blooms under the veil of anonymity in these three delightful tales! These short stories are such a great way to get some reading done in short bursts and I enjoyed the running masquerade theme throughout these stories.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In “A Double Masquerade” by Elizabeth Johns, a Cinderella-esque tale unfolds as Phoebe Cartwright, disguised in her cousin’s place, captures the heart of Lord Claremont. Amidst mistaken identities, love blossoms, and Lord Claremont embarks on a quest to find the true lady who captured his heart. I enjoyed this one the most, probably because of its Cinderella-like parallels!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jen Geigle Johnson’s “Their Masked Secret” introduces us to James Holbrook, enjoying his last foray as a bachelor before needing to settle down into his duties and take a wife when a chance encounter with the mysterious Meredith at a masquerade turns his head. This story brings you Insta love, a great group of friends, and some hilarious antics.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In “Masquerade A-la-Mode” by Annette Lyon, injured war hero Charles Ballam seeks love through unconventional means—a lonely hearts advertisement. Clarissa shouldn’t love the Lonely Hearts notices but finds reading them quite diverting. When one advertisement intrigues her, she agrees to meet the mysterious suitor at a masquerade, only to discover that identities may not be what they seem. The friendships in this story were as sweet as the HEA.

I enjoyed this Georgian collection of stories. Obviously each had a masquerade playing a big role in the story but each story was different from the others.

A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns
This was a delightful story. I loved that the hero could so easily tell the difference in the cousins instead of being misled for a time. He knew where his heart was. Also, his mom was AWESOME!

Their Masquerade Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson
I saw in other reviews that I was not the only one who wondered if this could be the beginning of a series for all the friends to find their love matches. Could be fun. It might have been a little over the top to have so many icky bad guys show up at the same time but it was a good illustration about the stupidity of some of the rules of propriety in the time period. Marrying a stranger due to compromise is one of those ridiculous rules. Thank heavens for the Prince in this one....

Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon
This story was more angst ridden than the other two due to living with the personal damages of war. But once true love is found, none of it matters anymore. Sigh....

The stories moved quickly due to to the length constraints of the story so attachments formed very quickly. But even so, I was rooting for all of them to find their place beside the person of their heart.

No sex, language or violence

This collection of three short stories were fun to read. They all had the similar element of masquerade balls but the stories were very different.
A Double Masquerade by Elizabeth Johns introduced Phoebe, who lives with her aunt and uncle and cousin Fanny. Phoebe's aunt insists that Fanny be introduced into society before Phoebe, despite her younger age. When Fanny gets sick, however, Phoebe is forced to pretend to be her cousin at a masquerade ball, dressed as a peacock. Meanwhile Arthur dresses as a fox to discreetly find a suitable wife and meets Phoebe, with whom he is smitten.
Lord Claremont (Arthur) then puts his assistant to work to find out the identity of the mysterious peacock and when his mother gets involved, it becomes quite entertaining.
I loved the characters in this story and how everything resolved itself in the end.

In Their Masked Secret by Jen Geigle Johnson, Lord Holbrook (Jamie) is told, along with his friends, that he has only one more season to find a bride before his father disowns him. They find the upcoming masquerade ball the perfect way to flaunt and flirt without being known, while checking out what their options are for possible marriages.
Meredith (or Merry) attends the masquerade ball hesitantly but while she is the heir to a fortune, she would like to see if she can find someone who loves her for herself and not for her money. She meets Lord Holbrook at the ball and they hit it off really well, but is it enough to pursue a relationship when the masks are removed?
Another great cast of characters in this short story. The theme seems to be that we can all be who we want to be when our true identity is masked but what happens after the mask is removed? Do those feelings remain?

In Masquerade A-la-Mode by Annette Lyon, Charles returns from war with a deformed hand and is nervous about being in society again being less than whole. His friend Doughty, acts as his wing man to get his friend to balls and to help build his confidence again, hoping to find him a suitable wife. Clarissa Amesbury and her companion Mary find the lonely hearts advertisements in the paper entertaining and have created fun outings by staking out the spots where the advertisers are to meet. When Charles submits his own lonely hearts advertisement, Clarissa thinks she may have just found her perfect match but will he be all that he seems?
I thought this story was very sweet and shows that no matter what imperfections we have or skeletons from our past haunt us, love can surpass all.
