This unique twist to the Civil War bases its emphasis on lesser-known incidents and their sometimes tragicomic outcomes. Presented is a fascinating overview of two fighting forces that stood on the brink of modern naval warfare. Black-and-white photos.
I first read this fantastic book in high school for a research paper on naval warfare. The paper was originally going to be more broad in scope, but when I finished this book, I realized that I needed to focus solely on its contents.
It's wonderfully written and exciting. It reads like fiction. I loved it so much, that I sought it out recently on Amazon and bought an old reprint (I believe it's out of print now).
NoAs a history buff, I found it outstanding. At the rear of book, Bibliography and Acknowledgments had small print of additional materials on each chapter making the read more educational. Chapters 3, 5, 11, & 12 have some amusing and some tragic events. The whorehouse, the deadly fire and the CSS Shenandoah's 58,000 statute mile 13 month cruise, anchors dry for 8 months with no serious injury are enlightening for us buffs. Hope you enjoy.
