Found the bits about the social and psychological aspects of Buddhism to be very interesting, but it was slightly harder for me to engage in the historical chapters.
A few of my favourite subjects had been: -The mindful process taken when eating meals after meditation -De-centralizing your life experience from the self and recognizing impermanence -The tea ceremony -The meditation process and how to incorporate more mindful behaviour
I enjoyed the beginning a lot, where the book talks about what Buddhism is itself and gives a brief history of it. I feel that I learned a lot from those beginning pages.
I stopped reading it soon after when the book started to list the historical journey of Buddhism through the world. Just not something I was interested in.
I've read many books on Buddhism. I don't know why I was drawn to read this book since it seemed destined to be a dummies book. I'm glad I took the chance.
I started with the book, but finished with the Kindle version so I could follow some of the links provided.
I had read many of the ubiquitous Zen books, starting in the 60s, and received my meditation training in a Theravada temple. I still did not appreciate the differences in the various flavors of Buddhism. This book gives a very nice overview of Buddhist history, branches of Buddhism, fundamental ideas and such and has broadened my knowledge of Buddhism.
My surprise was that it inspired me to read less in the coming year, meditate more and try to practice mindfulness throughout my day. I'm glad that I read this book.
This book is a great introduction to Buddhism, explaining the background, the history and the different traditions. I really liked it. It also gave me hints for further reading.
