What is an EMT and what does he do? New readers will learn all about this important job in this easy-to-read title. Crisp color photos enhance the simple text.
“EMTs Help Us,” never defines what “EMT” stands for (”emergency medical technician”). Otherwise the book is a very basic introduction to an EMT’s job. Spare text accompanies full-color photographs of diverse EMTs providing care to a variety of victims. The very simple text is a good lead-in for pre-school or early elementary children who will be meeting an ambulance crew, or as a springboard to discussion of this community helper’s job. Beginning readers will be able to master this text with very little help.
A brief index and several titles for additional reading are included, along with a table of contents. The author lists two web sites at the end of the book for readers interested in learning more about the topic. The first web site, “9-1-1 for Kids,” opens with a catchy tune that informs listeners about when it is appropriate to call 9-1-1. It also begs the question, “Why wasn’t 9-1-1 mentioned in the book?” Even a short note that EMT’s are often the first responders when 9-1-1 is called for medical emergencies would not have been inappropriate. The second web site is to the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences. The connection between the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences’ children’s page and the topic of EMTs was not apparent.
