James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.
Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.
Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.
Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.
More fun featuring the famed cartoon fat cat. Of particular note is the Tubby Tabby's version of Clement C. Moore's "The Night Before Christmas"; as a longtime lover of holiday humor, that one definitely made me smile.
3.5 stars. Garfield's tenth book and it was still going very strong at this point (i.e., no jumping the shark or mailing it in). Very funny and certainly appropriate to enjoy with your kids. Recommended!!
An original reader of Garfield, since a child in the late 1970s, I've been slowly re-reading all my old Garfield books and enjoying every minute of it. This 10th book which dates from 1985 shows the Garfield pretty much as still drawn today and each strip still brings a smile to your face. There are some great Christmas strips, visits to the vet long before Jon married Liz, and interactions with the mailman. Most of these strips aren't dated at all still bring a smile and any fan of the series will enjoy this book!
This book has a special place in my heart. It was the first Garfield book that I had ever gotten that catapulted me into the world of this tabby cat. I have been reading all of my Garfield books lately and this one still manages to make me laugh. It never fails to make me smile.
It was fun to read the comic that appeared in the newspapers on my birthday in 1984 in this book. Garfield was one of the first comics that I started reading as a kid. Still gave me a chuckle today.
Ah, yes! The hilarious, "Where were you guys raised, in a barn?" one. I laughed super hard when I read it as a kid, and now my kid laughed super hard at it. 😂
Going through this one there was only one that I really found boring. It was the Christmas story special. (Didn't even read that one.)Believe it or not I figured out why Garfield is so popular. It's not because of the hilarity of it all but rather it's the way we are able to relate to Garfield and Jon. It's the way their logic and the scenario's feel realistic like it can happen to you. I love the art design. (I'll probably say it every time but why do the walls sometimes shift color half way through a scene.) It doesn't happen as often in this book but it does.) Something I really like is how they are organized. I really like how they are all laid out in certain times. The farm clips are put together and the return from a vacation are all put together. I like the comic strips and I find them enjoyable and I think they just might have been getting better with each new book that was released.
Garfield Makes It Big book originally was published almost 20 years ago. Boy, how time doth fly. With a movie about to hit the theaters, Garfield has proved that he is around to stay.
Garfield is a character that many of us can relate to, as most of us do not weigh as little as we would like. Is he the kind of pet any of us would want to have . . .NO! But does he entertain us with his wit and humor. Oh, yes! Jon is the most understanding per owner in the world. I know I couldn't handle having a cat like Garfield.
So, if you are looking for a few chuckles, pick up Garfield Makes It Big for some good, clean fun.
Garfield makes it big: Jim Davis has once again used his expertise to charm and captivate our minds in his explosive 10th collection of comics. His wit and humor make America's favorite fat cat come to life, now more gluttonous and hilarious than ever before. My only complaint is that the Sunday strips are not printed in color, but overall this is a wonderful arrangement of comics.
I loved Garfield when I was in middle school. I had several of these collections, and I read them all again and again.
I'm giving three stars based on the way I felt about the book when I read it the first time (or should I say the first 10 to 15 times?). Now I can't imagine reading any one of these books one time.
I can barely believe how many of these collections exist.
