Tempting

Una decepción, y eso le ha quitado una estrella, no por la novela en sí sino por las grandes expectativas que venían justificadas por la suculenta sinopsis.
Por lo demás, una novela más, quizás debería juzgarla menos duramente ya que es una primera novela y eso, por mucho que esté revisada, se nota.
El problema añadido es la falta de quimica total entre los protagonistas. No sé, su relación me ha parecido de lo más fría. A ella la puedo entender, él ha sido su salvador, pero lo de él... todavía me tiene dando vueltas.
Por otro lado, estas novelas en las que todo todo termina tan bien me hacen pensar en algo demasiado irreal.
En contra decir que es una novela que se lee sola, que el estilo no es malo y, si bien la trilogía anterior me pareció que la protagonista estaba totalmente fuera de contexto con sus actitudes y ciertas conversaciones, en ésta el tema está más controlado.
Pero tenemos un hombre con una evolución que no se explica, un aprendizaje que resulta de lo más irreal y una relación que no me he creído. Tema aparte lo de Rebecca y lo del abuelo....

Después de hacerme leído la saga de vencida , he confiado otra vez en esta autora pero como ella misma dice en el prólogo , fue su primera novela y se nota mucho ya que no he visto la química de la pareja protagonista como en la otra saga...'si birn te verdad que ya apuntaba maneras Esta autora , le quedaba mucho que pulir .... Por eso le doy solo un dos estrellas deseando que sus próximos libros estén a la altura de la saga vencida !

Simon Belleville es un hombre que se ha hecho a sí mismo, su pasado le pesa a las espaldas y solo vive para su trabajo y como aspirante al Parlamento; por lazos del destino una de sus tareas lo cruza en el camino de Christine Tremayne, una pobre joven en graves condiciones que habita un burdel. Desde ese momento Simon se enfrenta a su ansiado deseo como es ese puesto y el deseo que comienza a surgir por esa muchacha.
En esta etapa en la que estoy dejando de seguir un camino fijo con respecto a encadenarme a los autores de siempre, me decanté por esta novela y por una autora que no conocía, con lo que eso a veces nos provoca, esa sensación de meter la pata. Pero tengo que decir que para nada, todo lo contrario, me ha sorprendido gratamente.
Desde luego la autora tiene mucho talento, tanto para narrar de una forma en la que el lector se deja llevar por la corriente y se mete de lleno en ese Londres de 1867, en la época Victoriana, deleitándonos con una descripción bastante detallada de ese mundo, la ambientación sin duda está muy lograda y se disfruta sin lugar a dudas.
Las primeras páginas me impactaron de una manera que a estas alturas (y con lo que uno lee) creía que no me causarían ningún impacto. ¡Qué equivocada estaba! En tres páginas me desarmó y eso es difícil en mi caso. Me impactó mucho, supongo que es esa especial forma de narrar de la autora que para mí es una de las singularidades que tiene.
La historia no será nada nuevo, el hombre adinerado que comienza a sentir un profundo cariño que se convierte en amor por una joven desvalida (no tanto); lo que creo que la hace interesante (aparte de la excelente narración) son sobre todo sus protagonistas, muy reales, sencillos en sentimientos y con eso me refiero a que no hay senderos retorcidos en ellos, no sé si me explico bien, pero es como si no le importara a la autora mostrar sus debilidades, no las oculta tras secretos inconfesables y cosas por el estilo.
La trama está muy bien estructurada, cada cosa tiene su momento y lugar; los tiempos me gustaron también porque causan expectativa, eso de que la acción suceda de golpe no me gusta. Sin duda hay momentos divertidos, momentos románticos, otros de mucha emoción, tristes como debería ser.
Sin duda el cincuenta por ciento de esta historia no sería nada sin los personajes protagonistas. Christine es una joven con muchas aristas, es dulce, frágil pero también fuerte y decidida, tiene un carácter que me ha gustado notablemente. Simon tampoco se queda atrás, ese hombre luchador, fuerte y meticuloso tiene su parte romántica, sus debilidades, sobre todo ésta última la refleja la autora de una manera que me agradó. ¡Los hombres también lloran! Sí, señor y porqué no mostrarlo. Para mí no lo hace más débil sino todavía más real.
En fin, como podéis ver me ha encantado este libro y…seguro que repito con la autora muy pronto. “No se puede vivir sin amor” es una historia romántica que os recomiendo, muy completa, es una delicia leer novelas así.

Hope Tarr’s Tempting was published in 2002 by Jove and now Hope has self-published Tempting for .99 cents. This is now my favorite book by Tarr set in the Victorian era with a Jewish hero who becomes a very rich and powerful man and falls for a poor, country girl who was tricked into forced into a brothel.
Simon Belleville blames himself for the rape of his sister by two men when they were teenagers. His sister’s mind became broken because of it and she lives in a fantasy world. Simon is a self made man of important and is the head of Her Majesty’s Morality and Vice Commission and raids brothels. On his recent raid, he finds a bruised and sick young woman locked in the attic. Christine left the countryside and came to London to find work after her nasty cousin tried to rape her. Christine was trying to find honest work, but Simon doesn’t believe it. He believes she’s been abused and possibility violated. He goes against everything and takes her into his home to recover. Something about Christine makes him want to protect her, so much so he’ll pay for her schooling so she can learn decorum and proper etiquette and perhaps get a job as a governess. But Simon can’t remain separated from Christine for long because he misses her. He takes her to his country estate where she learns the truth about the real man hiding behind a mask he shows the world.
Tempting is a must read for any historical romance fan. It has an almost old school romance feel to it with Simon being older than Christine by fifteen years and how he likes to control the situation in a somewhat highhanded manner. But Hope has a nice twist regarding Simon, in that he’s a combination of a beta-alpha whose entire protective instincts come out in regards to Christine who after all she's been through doesn’t cower in fear. The buildup of tension and attraction between these two are well done. There’s only one love scene, but WOW, it's hot and steamy.
Tempting is all about being true to one’s self. Christine isn’t ashamed from where she has come from and Simon may hate his poor roots and almost rejects his heritage, but he loves his step-father who saved his mother and his sister from living on the streets. Simon is a man with wonderful principals you can’t help but admire, and he needs someone like Christine in his life.
Tempting gets an A- from me and one that’s staying on my keeper shelf. Seriously, the price for Tempting is quite the steal. Buy it now.

Una novela con un muy buen comienzo que va flojeando a medida que avanza. Creo que no tiene la calidad de la trilogía "Los hombres de Roxbury House" ni en los protagonistas ni en el desarrollo de la trama. Algunos anacronismos me han distanciado de la lectura y los secundarios (salvo uno) tampoco me han convencido. Es un novela irregular, con escenas bonitas e intensas junto a otras que cojean mucho. El estilo de esta autora no fluye aquí de igual manera que otras de sus historias, como "Vencida". La recomendaría solo a las adictas a la romántica histórica no muy exigentes.

Me ha gustado, lo leí en un santiamén, pero me quedo con la sensación de que le faltaron algunas cosas para hacer honor a esa sinopsis que prometía tanto. Igual, me gustaría repetir con la autora, he disfrutado mucho su forma de narrar.

This was my first book by this author but it definitely won't be my last. I really enjoyed this delightful story and the author's writing style -- and the age difference (15 years) didn't turn me off either, as it sometimes does. A very strong female lead who overcame great hurdles while standing her ground. Would highly recommend this book to historical readers.

Peri masali okumak istiyorsaniz tam size göre bir roman. Sonsuz Kitaba tesekkürler bizi Deanne Gist'ten sonra Hope Tarr ile tanıstirdigi icin.... Belki çok özgün bir hikaye degildi ama kesinlikle çok seveceginiz bir hikayesi vardi Simon Belleville ve Christine Tremayne çiftinin karsilasip tanışmalari cok sıradışı oldu...Simon Kraliyetin Ahlak Komisyonunda sorumlu başkandi görevi genelevleri kapatmak idi. Kapattıgı evlerin birinin tavan arasında cok genc ve masum görünümlü bir kıza rastladı. Bir anda kendini onu hapise atmak yerine hanimefendi olması içın egitim almasını saglarken ve bunun içinde eski metresi Margottan yardım isterken buldu. Christineyi unutabilmeyi umarkende onun egitiminin geri kalanıni da kendisi bizzat vermeyi hiç planlamıyordu. Ondan kacmaya çalıştıkça kendinden tamamen uzaklaştıramıyordu. Christine kendini okula bırakan Simonun günlerce haftalarca yolunu gözlemısti ama bir türlü gelmemisti. Sonunda kendisini başından savdıgını düşünmeye başladıgında tekrar okula onu görmeye geri gelmişti. Kendisine geri kalan egitimi o verecekti. Simon geçmışinin ve kızkardesinin gözleri önünde tecavüze ugramasının yükünü omuzlarında taşıyordu. Ablasının başına gelenlerden kendini sorumlu tutuyordu. Bir fahışe sandıgı Chrıstineye ikinci bir şans vermek isterken geçmisi ile de hesaplaşmak zorunda kalıyordu. Okumaktan büyük bir keyif aldıgım bir romandı. Tavsiye ederim.

What a lovely book. The H/h characters are drawn out at a slow steady pace. Their mistakes with each other and how they handled them only made me like them more. Simon is a delicious paradox. There is plenty of backstory necessary to the H/h character but the focus is on this couple's inevitable fall into love, which is written so convincingly that even the few predictable plot turns are blithely forgiven by this girl. Such a great surprise as I bought it on a whim b/c it was only $0.99 (as of 6/8/12). A steal and I'll be happy to pay full price for more from Ms Tarr. A very good read.

I would have given this one four stars, but I really dislike rape scenes, even when it was integral to the development of the main character, Simon Belleville. The plot was interesting, a romance between Simon, a self made man with noble bloodlines and his dairy maid love, Christine Tremayne. Many complications occur and the HEA was hard to come by. The Epilogue at the end was a bit too complete...thought I'd never say that. Would have been a better ending with Simon's proposal in the dairy.

Me gusto mucho , mucho . Es de esos libros que a mi personalmente me gustan . El tira y afloja del personaje masculino en tratar de mantenerse alejado y negar sus sentimientos por la protagonista me gusta porque al final cuando caen lo hacen de una manera en que no se vuelven a levantar jajajaj . Se enamoran y cuidan lo que aman con uñas y dientes por decirlo de alguna manera . Fue una lectura muy bonita y que disfrute mucho.

Christine es muy diferente a las protagonistas de noble cuna a las que me tienen acostumbradas las novelas románticas de época, y hasta me puedo creer que se enamoro de Simón gracias al agradecimientos y admiración que le tenia.
Con Simon fue más complicado, durante todo el libro me pareció que prioriza sus interese políticos antes que su relación.
El final muy apresurado. Me parece increíble como tras años y años en los que Simon se torturó y vivió con el corazón frío y lleno de odio, de repente las dos situaciones que le provocaron esos oscuros sentimiento con su abuelo y Rebecca, se abordan y resuelvan en menos de un capitulo. También la aparición del primo, que podría haber aportado algo de aventura y drama, fue del todo desaprovechado.

Tengo que reconocer que el género romántico no es para mí: me parece que está lleno de estereotipos que son contraproducentes.
En "No se puede vivir sin amor" nos encontramos la típica historia, con una joven pobre e indómita frente a un hombre rico y atribulado, así que no sorprende mucho el argumento. Ambos tienen heridas, físicas o emocionales, que logran superar a través del amor que surge entre ambos.
El trasfondo histórico es muy suave, simplemente nos permite ambientarnos y romantiza un poco las escenas, pero realmente no aporta nada más.
La historia resulta entretenida y este es el punto fuerte del libro, ya que permite evasión sin emplear grandes esfuerzos.

A Pygmalion Variation. Found in a brothel, Christine is taken in by Simon, a self-made man with a murky past but a brilliant political future. Given elocution lessons and taught to act as a lady things appear to be going well but Christine’s past comes back to haunt her and at heart she will always be a dairymaid.

Me tomó años acercarme a este libro y no me arrepiento de nada, lo disfruté mucho.
No iba con expectativas altas ya que es el primero que leo de esta autora, solo me chocó el hecho de que hubiera tantos giros en la relación entre Christine y Simon.
Es una buena historia.

Read for the 2017 February TBR Challenge: New-To-You Author
This is a Pygmalion tale between 34 year old Simon Belleville, a man of property and experience who’s being groomed by Benjamin Disraeli to stand for Parliament, and 19 year old Christine Tremayne, a young woman who came to London to find work after a relative inherited her family’s small dairy farm. Simon discovers Christine locked away in the attic of a brothel when he’s clearing the place out as part of his duties as head of Her Majesty’s Morality and Vice Commission. Christine had gone there looking for respectable work not realizing what the place really was. She is skin and bones when he discovers her, and understanding hunger himself, Simon is moved to take her home until he can decide what can be done for her rather than to Newgate with the prostitutes they’ve rounded up. I won’t summarize the rest of the plot other than tell you that Christine is running from something and Simon is wrestling with demons from his own past. I thought the writing itself was very good. Simon and Christine are well realized, but as the story went on I got frustrated with some of Simon’s choices. By the final third he reacts to something he asks Christine not to do, but she does anyway, in a way that is unworthy of him. However, I did like how Simon’s former mistress turns out to be a friend to both Christine and Simon. After the villain of the story is dealt with, Simon has one last hurdle to overcome to bring the story back to the Pygmalion theme. Christine maintains that she can’t be with him until he can love her for who she truly is, not what he has molded her to be. Simon, of course, has to let this sink in before HEA can be achieved, but his issues by this point melt away rather quickly. This is the first book I’ve read by Tarr. I have one other in my TBR that I hope to follow up with later this year.

Victorian London was a two-sided coin, each side the opposite of its counterpart. The rich and influential on the one side and the poor and downtrodden the other, lived (if not in harmony) together in the greatest metropolis of the time; London. Pygmalion revisited, Simon Belleville, a 34 year old vice commissioner with plans of standing for parliament in the next election, meets Christine Tremayne a crude, dirty and under nourished street urchin. Move over Liza Doolittle, there’s a new scamp in town. Why he took the risk and accepted the cost of taking her under his wing is as much a mystery to him as it is to the reader. One can only assume that their common roots are close enough to form an affinity. Changing her from a street waif to a lady is more of a challenge than Simon imagined and nature soon took its course and their relationship became more intimate. Will love prevail? Will Simon win a seat in parliament will Christine prove to be an asset or detriment to his coveted position? Will she shed the fetters of a strict class world and be embraced by England’s upper crust? This refreshing romance is sure to appeal to readers of both genders. I see this as a “feel good” tale as when the last page is read the reader is left with a comforting after glow.

Me decidí a leer este libro tras echarle un vistazo a la sinopsis y tras haber leído ya uno de esta autora. Cierto que se ve cierta similitud con My fair lady pero estamos ante una novela con estilo propio que, pese a fallar en algunos detalles como por ejemplo pasar casi de puntillas por la carrera política de Simon, logra enganchar al lector, aunque algunas escenas son demasiado previsibles. Juega a su favor que el personaje de Christinne está muy bien construido, dejando bien claro que es una mujer fuerte con una personalidad muy marcada. Una novela entretenida que deja un buen sabor de boca.

First by this author and I look forward to reading more. The initial, very harsh scene put me off a bit, but the unusual background of the main character and the glimpses into the Jewish community of London, while taking only a sliver of space in the book, were nonetheless fascinating. I suspect the open-mindedness of the step-father and a few others was actually in itself very unusual and probably unlikely, but I enjoyed reading about it anyway. Likewise I'm not sure how effective the curing of trauma by trauma really is, but what do I know?

Iba con un poco de miedo con este libro. Primera novela, algunos comentarios no favorables...pero la verdad es que me ha encantado.
Tanto Simon como Christine son personajes muy sólidos y han pasado por vidas difíciles.
La trama esta bien llevado, no se hace larga y l resolución final es muy tierna.
Quizás la subtrama "misteriosa" esta poco desarrollada pero se entiende perfectamente y no se hace nada pesada

While I'm not a huge fan of having an "ex" in the picture, even as "just friends", I have to say I really enjoyed this one. Full review to follow, but 4/5 stars.
