Rate this book
Miss Chelsea Bellamy is desperate.

Her beloved brother is being held for ransom! Impoverished after the deaths of her parents, Chelsea doesn't have five shillings, never mind the five hundred pounds the kidnappers are demanding. With no one to turn to, she resorts to highway robbery to raise the sum.

Lord Anthony Grenville is bored.

Viscount Montrose's coach is overtaken by a highwayman—who turns out to be no man at all! Anthony hasn't been this intrigued by anything, or anyone, since his return from the war. And when he catches the flame-haired thief breaking into his London house to further fill her coffers, he comes up with a plan to rescue her brother—and resolves to seduce her into his bed!

Their passion is mutual.

Chelsea accepts Anthony's aid, but she'll never become his mistress—even if the thought of it fills her veins with liquid fire.

Orjinal Adı,A Rogue's Pleasure

Not my typical review, but this is not my usual read. However, Hope Tarr wins me over with this regency romance. A Rogue's Pleasure is, and I blush when I happily admit, a newly found guilty pleasure. I've already added several more of Hope Tarr's books to my to-be-read list. When the mood strikes, I can't wait to curl up with a chunk of chocolate, a warm blanket and surrender to the historical world the author paints. I quite enjoyed the dirty side of London. The characters are engaging and I fell head over heels for Lord Grenville. If you have a soft spot for 19th century rakes, you'll lust after him too. It was a fast paced read that had me flipping pages late into the night. I was having so much fun reading that I hated to put it down. It was entertaining, enjoyable, and delightfully romantic. Viscount Grenville is the ultimate historical bad boy of London and if I had a time machine I'd jump in it and likely throw myself on his doorstep. The love scenes were delicious and hung on the edge of erotic without spilling over into vulgarity. The language was romantic, seductive and sensual without being dirty. However, for the more prudish it might be too much and if you're longing for chaste traditional sexual restraint sometimes found in the historical genre, this is not your book. What I adored about Tarr's writing was that she mingles historical adventure and period setting with romantic sensuality. For me, this is a winning and entertaining combination. I felt very attached to Chelsea and Grenville and invested in their love story. I can't wait to read another! Besides, who can resist the new smoking cover!

Miss Chelsea Bellamy doesn’t know what to do. In the wake of her parents’ death, she and her brother, Robert, have almost nothing. When Robert is kidnapped and Chelsea receives a ransom note demanding five hundred pounds, she has no option but to turn to highway robbery. Unfortunately, one of the coaches Chelsea chooses to rob is the wrong one.

Lord Anthony Grenville, Viscount Montrose, is surprised when he and his fiancée are set upon by a highwayman. He’s even more surprised to find that the highwayman is no man at all. When he catches Chelsea thieving again, this time from his home, he offers to help her rescue her brother. He claims he’s helping Chelsea because he’s bored, but what he really wants is the beautiful thief as his mistress.

I was attracted to A Rogue’s Pleasure by its premise and beautiful cover. To my delight, Hope Tarr presented a most entertaining first meeting for its protagonists. How often do you see a Regency heroine robbing the man she’ll eventually fall in love with? Sadly, my pleasure in reading Chelsea and Anthony’s story was short-lived. A Rogue’s Pleasure moved at a slow pace and as much as I wanted to like Chelsea, there were far too many moments in the book where her intelligence seemed to have taken flight just so a certain situation could be set up. Anthony was even harder to like. I understand the plot device of having a hero engaged to one woman and then meeting his heroine. What frustrated me was that he didn’t even seem to feel a hint of guilt (or if he did it was so quickly passed over I took no note of it) over trying to make Chelsea his mistress, all the while not telling her he still intended to marry someone else. To make matters worse, he had an awful habit of making assumptions about Chelsea that had no logical basis that I could see. All in all, A Rogue’s Pleasure was just not the book for me.

A ROGUE'S PLEASURE by Hope Tarr is a delightful historical romance set in 1812 England. It is well written with the characters and plot easy to follow. The characters will steal your heart, championing their cause and wanting them to success. It has been previously published. It has sensuality, adventure, suspense, passion, deceit, desperation and a budding romance or two.The heroin, Chelsea, is beautiful, resourceful, determined, strong willed and desperate. Her beloved brother, Robert, has been kidnapped,a ransom demanded, they are impoverished after the deaths of their parents. She will resort to highway robbery and housebreaking to gain the money needed to save her brother. The hero, Lord Grenville,(Anthony), is handsome, a war hero, a Viscount, betrothed to another, and is intrigued by the lovely Chelsea, who has overtaken has carriage as a highwayman(One-Eyed Jack). He believes this highwayman to be a woman, is intrigued by her, determines to help her find her brother, and resolves to seduce her in the process. What begins as an adventure, intrigue, desperation, passion, betrayal to a betrothed turns into a love story. This is a fast paced, page turning story of love, sacrifice, and commitment. I would recommend this book especially if you enjoy a wonderful historical romance, suspense and adventure. This book was received for review from Net Galley and details can be found at Carina Press and My Book Addiction and More.

This is my first book by Hope Tarr and I love it. I haven't read a lot of historical romances, but this book is making me rethink that choice.

The romance between Chelsea and Anthony was pure drama and funny as hell. I was rooting for Chelsea to have a HEA with him even though he didn't really deserve her.

Chelsea was a very likeable character. She was feisty at times and did what she felt was necessary to survive. Other times she was very naive and got caught up in situations that she should have seen coming. I hated the fact that she felt like she had no one she thought she could depend on to take care of her. And Anthony certainly wanted to take care of her, just not in the way she really needed him to.

Despite his rakish ways, I loved Anthony. I wanted to hate him so bad, because he was so full of himself. He treated women like playthings and plotted to get keep everything in his favor. He even got pissy when his so called "services" were rejected. I was glad when he did the right thing and redeemed himself. Although I do not approve of his methods (looking the other way), he did a good job of worming his way into Chelsea's heart.

Chelsea Bellamy's younger brother has been kidnapped and she doesn't have the funds to pay his ransom. In desperation she turns to her manservant, a former highwayman, for instructions on how to follow in his footsteps. Chelsea then masquerades as "One-Eyed Jack" a notorious highwayman much feared in her area. She robs her neighbors in an effort to raise the funds needed, until one fateful night.

Viscount Montrose (Anthony Greenville) is bringing his fiancee to his estate when "One-Eyed Jack" stops his carriage. Anthony fumes as he realizes that he is being robbed by a girl and an elderly man, but has little choice in the matter. Tables are turned though, when he catches that same female trying to steal the silver from his townhouse.

Anthony is intrigued by Chelsea and is determined that he should have her- while Chelsea is determined to be a wife or nothing. In order to keep Chelsea close he proposes to help ransom her brother and sparks fly.

I quite enjoyed this story. It was nice to see a heroine try an unconventional method of survival, and not have the vapors and let the menfolk do the work. I look forward to reading more stories by Hope Tarr.

This is a previously published novel that is being re-issued by Carina Press, a very good historical novel about a woman who enters a life of crime in order to pay the ransom for her kidnapped brother. In the process she meets an aristocrat who determines that he will make her his mistress but he plans without knowing that the lady in question has absolutely no intention of succumbing to his charms, even if it means sufficient money to free her brother. There are a fair number of surprises in this novel and the on again/off again nature of Chelsea's friendship with Lord Anthony keeps the action in the novel interesting and pushing the reader further into the story. I think Hope Tarr is a very accomplished writer who knows her historicalo "stuff" and manages to bring fresh creativity into a genre that many authors don't manage well.

Hope Tarr sure does make you wait for an HEA. I wasn't sure we'd get one. Chelsea is in financial straits and has to resort to highway robbery to pay a ransom for her brothers life. I love that Tarr didn't expect us to believe that Chelsea would be an excellent thief out of the shoot. She shows just how dreadful Chelsea is and she doesn't improve in that capacity. I particularly like how Anthony, engaged to be married in a month, is not only enchanted and consumed by our heroine but is so typical Regency era in his thinking .... "I must have her as my mistress". But Chelsea isn't buying that nor is she willing to belittle herself regardless of her financial circumstances or humble birth. It's great when Anthony actually realizes how selfish he is and Chelsea sees how her willfulness/independence gets her in far too much trouble. Enjoyable read with proper villains.

I liked the beginning of the book (and its cover!), the writing is good and the characters attractive, but as the story evolved I found myself bored and disliking the self-centered and selfish hero - “a spoiled, conceited dilettante who cared only for pleasure no matter the toll”, as he himself recognizes.

The overall story was good and I was intrigued by the idea but the execution fell short. I found myself pulled in the story at times and other times I was completely bored. The characters were likeable and very predictable.

2.5 Hope Tarr is a strong writer, stylistically. But her plotting is rather thin and predictable, and her characters fairly flat. I read about half then put it aside, not willing to waste my time.

I thought the characterization of Chelsea was much deeper and stronger than that of Anthony who felt a little two dimensional to me. On the whole a diverting read.

This book was good but I hated how the heroine always needed rescuing, she could never do anything for myself.
