I hope I won't be falling short of the remark if I were to say "The only book you need to read about the dark days when democracy slept".

Kuldip Nayar was one of the leading journalists of our nation(India) at the time of Emergency was holding a post with the Indian Express who covered the ground reality during and after the emergency was imposed in many of the rural and urban areas with one eye on the going ons inside of the bureaucracy of the Parliament. Here we come to know of the many characters who were pivotal to the imposition of the dark act and how and what atrocities were committed if you've been uninformed (like me) about them previously! The wheel of democracy alas had to keep on moving and one lapse of "judgement" by the power hungry people due to the seeds of fear sowed in the whole process came back to bite them, which in turn gave the wheel it's momentum. There can even be seen some acts from which parallels can be drawn at this day and age. It's a very much relevant read and "history repeats itself" is yet gonna be the phrase that one can think of after going through with this book.

Some of the quotes i liked-

- Real Swaraj will come not by the acquisition of authority by a few but by the acquisition of the capacity by all to resist authority when it is abused. In other words, Swaraj is to be attained by educating the masses to a sense of their capacity to regulate and control authority
- compromise helps and pays far more dividens than a wildgoose chase after ideals

The Judgement it's about the heady days leading to the Emergency. Interesting and informative, Kuldip Nayar writes with the insight of a journalist and an activist, a freedom fighter, who had witnessed the Independence of India.

Immensely relavant in today's time. As they say history rhymes itself. So are the tools and processes to crush the democracy. Gives you deep insight into the biggest political decision of the biggest democracy which will Shake the roots of the public faith.
Explains how can most powerful persons can catch the lust of power just by having a mild hint of vulnerability.
Looking at the tight control and manipulations over the press and independent media and critical democratic institutions in current times, it seems like we have yet to learn so much from the times of Emergency.
Must read for all the people who believe in democracy and have a love for idea of India.
This book will make you think why it's not a good idea to be simple followers of a massive leader. Not asking questions is not going to help.

good read. in my view Indira and Sanjay and his team were given little punishment for their atrocities. in any other country they would have been in jail for life.
