Ourselves Among Others: Readings from Home and Abroad, 4th Edition

Rate this book
Ourselves Among Others revolutionized the teaching of writing in American colleges and universities by expanding students' focus from U.S. and British authors to outstanding writing around the world. Epigraphs by Annie Dillard, John Kenneth Galbraith, Gloria Steinem, William Least Heat Moon, Alice Walker, Studs Terkel, and others introduce seventy-two essays and stories by V.S. Naipaul, Isak Dinesen, Wole Soyinka, Yashar Kemal, Nadine Gordimer, Gabriel Garcia Marquea, and others from more than thirty countries. This book's unique organization keeps the readings manageable and accessible within six thematic units, each followed by reading and critical-thinking questions and suggested essay topics. Thoroughly class-tested, this adventurous thematic reader exposes students to stimulating writing from the United States and abroad, giving them a critical, cross-cultural perspective essential in today's global society. Along with college and AP writing and reading classes, the book has been very popular and successful with ESL students.

Love this! What a great read. I've read the 3rd edition as well, and I was not disappointed with the 4th. It's such a thorough examination of world literature and also helps the discussions in my Intercultural Communications class.
