This book is written for undergraduate students who are preparing to start writing a dissertation or other large paper in the fields of media or cultural studies. It does a good job of introducing the main areas of interest in these fields and providing the most common research methodologies used. This gives students a broad view of the field, and they can choose the research method and topic that appeals to them the most. Each chapter has a recommended reading list, so once students choose what they want to research, this book points them towards other books that might be useful in their research. I highly recommend this book for undergraduates in these fields. Graduate students can probably skip ahead to more advanced texts, but it could still be useful if you haven't decided what you want to research yet.
This book was given to me by a friend. I found much of the information useful, even though the book's focus was on media and cultural studies. I really appreciated the sections on content analysis, surveys, and archive research. Very easy to understand and written for the student. I learned a lot.
Not the best or greatest, but a solid intro to media and cultural studies and how to do your paper in this field. Good summary of the methods, though I missed examples of good interview questions, and what to look for in those.
i have the Indonesian version of this title. Newbie-friendly and thorough - an unspoken encouragement for first-time media/cultural studies researchers. quite good translation by Yogyakarta's Bentang publisher (Santi Indra Astuti)
