aang and Toph have always had their differences. But as a sacred ceremony approaches that Aang has been looking forward to continuing since his time out of the ice, tensions between the two grow as their differing opinions collide. Also, the land where this ceremony is held doesn't look the same and that causes its own issues.

What I loved 💙
I like that we finally got some closure on the whole Roku situation from the first series (The Promise). It was something that has honestly been bothering me in the back of my mind til now so I'm glad it was resolved in a way that taught Aang a lot about becoming his own person and leader in this life. I also like that we finally got more information on Avatar Yangchen. As I don't know whether or not I'll get around to the individual novels for her, I think it's important that we finally learn a bit more about her and about what her life was like in terms of it affecting the present day. I like the fact that Toph got closure after so long with her issue with authority and her parents and teaching others while also learning herself. It really explains why she ends up where she is in TLOK.

What I didn't love ❌
I didn't like the water tribe girl who gave Katara and Sokka so much grief for doing what their grandma told them to do. Like yes, I understand that the village has been struggling since the war; really, since before the war. But, that doesn't mean act like that. Whether she apologized or not, it still made me upset. Next, ole boy's Uncle?! Yeah, he got what he deserved and that's all I'll say on that.

Tl;dr ✨
Nice change of pace from the constant action of the previous saga. A bit slow at times and it didn’t necessarily grip me the same way BUT, still pretty good.

It was so fun being reunited with the gang! Overall, this was a fun read though I did feel like the conflicts were a bit much. Toph and Aang have often not seen eye to eye but I expected a bit of character growth here. I also didn't love how that water tribe girl gave Katara and Sokka a hard time - I understand but she acted extra crappy towards them. One of the things that I am really happy about? The fact Toph got some closure with her dad.

i love how these stories tackle a new challenge we face in the world today. it truly raises a kind generation of kids who read the books. for this book is was about embracing the past, but knowing that sometimes you’ll have to change to match the future. like we do in real life.

Toph is my favourite character so having her be one of the characters this comic focuses on the most?? Amazing !!!

And also, Satoru?? 👀 I would love to see more of him and Toph in the future!!

(7/143) Fight! Fight! Fight! Toph and Aang having wildly philosophical views on the same issue is the course correction I needed for these stories. I’m again blown away by the nuanced themes of nature versus modernity (pollution, over extraction), what it means to reconcile with family (Toph’s dad) and preserving culture for future generations are effortlessly woven in without seeming didactic because of the Yang’s COMPLETE understanding of these characters. Avatar Yangchen flashbacks were a highlight and I’m tempted to read her novels along with Avatar Kyoshi’s.
