Wanna do things you never thought to your body… Kleio Wilkins has just finished a fourteen-year bid– At least that's how it feels. After years in an unhappy, unsatisfying marriage, she's looking forward to the cool, fresh breath of freedom. Before she can inhale, however, in walks Ariel Ellis. He's everything her ex wasn't and more, breaking down insecurities she thought she'd long overcome. Could he be the freedom she's been longing for?
I'm just a girl in love with literature. My love affair with romance novels started with I was 13 and has flourished into an obsession. I've always been a writer. Even when I was a little girl, I always had a pen and a notebook poised to let something out. You Make Me Better is my first project that will be published and I am STOKED. My goal is to write stories surrounding positive black love, with a little humor tossed in.
So, HotBox, lets talk about it. I’m going to preface my review by saying, I loved this book. I loved the characters, I loved the chemistry between Kleio and Ariel, and I loved me some Jeremiah. Once again, AshleyNicole has given us an unproblematic couple and y’all know those are my jam. That just added an extra level of love to this book. After 14 years of hell, Kleio has finally freed herself from her nightmare of a marriage. She’s livin’ life like she wants and doing things on her own terms and this, of course, requires a celebration. While she’s out livin’ it up like the newly single woman she is, she meets Ariel. I know we say this a lot in our reviews but, Ariel really was everything Kleio didn’t know she needed. She didn’t have the easiest life growing up and, unfortunately, when she was finally able to get away from her horrible azz parents she ends up with Bryan. So, at the age of 34, Kleio finds herself experiencing a lot of firsts with Ariel. When it came to relationships, he opened a whole new world she didn’t even know existed. It was sweet and sad at the same time that she had to realize this so late in life. Ariel was a breath of fresh air. He was kind, loving, patient, attentive, a good listener, a great lover, and most of all, affectionate. All of the things Kleio never got to experience with her parents or ex-husband. I loved how easy going their relationship was and how they fell in love so organically. The only blip on their love journey was that damn ex-husband of hers. Bryan deserved all the smoke for the shyt he pulled. He was a manipulative and toxic narcissist who got off on gaslighting Kleio and his kid when he couldn’t get his way. This man was a horrible individual who took mama’s boy to a whole new level. For someone who could care less about his wife when they were married, he was big mad about the divorce and refused to accept they weren’t getting back together. This is where I take issue with this book. I had a huge problem with Kleio’s lack of action regarding Bryan’s behavior with Jeremiah. There were all kinds of red flags waving in Kleio’s face, and it felt like she just stuck her head in the sand and ignored them. He was weaponizing her child against her and harming Jeremiah’s mental health and Kleio didn’t seem to be as bothered by it as I thought she should. When she found out what Bryan was doing, her response was to let karma take care of him. Not only that but, she still allowed him to keep Jeremiah a whole week afterwards. That made absolutely no sense. No mother would’ve let that happen. Given the gravity of the situation, Kleio and her lawyer should’ve been sitting in an emergency custody hearing demanding temporary full custody until Bryan agreed to go to therapy. The way his behavior was escalating throughout this book, he definitely needed to be sitting on somebody’s couch seven days a week. With no confrontation between the two of them, it felt like there was no real resolution with the problems Kleio and Bryan’s were having. There's no way she can effectively co-parent with this man. Especially, since he was still pulling the same shyt. The same goes for Kendra’s snitchin’ azz. There should’ve been a phone call, a text, or something with Kleio cussin’ her out. Why was she so upset about their divorce?!!! I feel like that should’ve been addressed as well. HotBox was a really good book. It was sexy, funny, the characters were loveable, and the sex was hot. I loved that Kleio and Ariel worked with Rook and Jaylen at their individual companies. Y’all know I love catching up with our faves. I could’ve easily given this book five stars. I wanted to give it five stars but, there was too much that wasn’t fleshed out properly. However, I’d still highly recommend you add this book to your TBR.
Hotbox for reallll!! Kleio has the best of luck leaving a 14yr terrible marriage and falling into the hands of Ariel aka Bouncer Bae! To think you’re out celebrating your divorce meet a hot guy and have a 1 night stand in the club and then find out he’s your son’s favorite teacher?!? And baby the drama unfolds from there! Of course we see why Kleio divorced her ex and how she may have ended up with him when looking at her family dynamic. It was beautiful to see Kleio enjoy herself and break free with Ariel. Ariel was tall slender and handsome with locs! I would’ve been a goner too girl! Ariel didn’t let the antics of Kleio’ ex husband stop him from pursuing her. It seemed like Kleio’s exes family could not let her go. Tbh his whole family seems odd! Kleio found her voice at end And set the record straight with her ex husband and I cheered because I felt she should’ve done that sooner! I know divorce is not easy especially when kids are involved but I was glad to Kleio kept her son first no matter what. Can’t say the same for her ex but whatever. I think the title of this book also speaks for itself cause baby they did it everywhere and then some. Lol no complaints from me! I really enjoyed this read because it was fun, sexy, funny dialogue/banter, and just a good story which AshleyNicole is known to give. Definitely would recommend this book! 4/4.5 stars!
Ashley, why did you do that? I have always loved your heroine… that is until I met Kleio. Okay, I didn't necessarily hate her. But she was super frustrating in the way she dealt with her ex-husband. But I'll recircle to that. But I loved the meeting between her and Ariel. She made the first move and it worked out beautifully. She was an AMAZING MOM. She was all about Jeremiah. That little boy was an angel, no thanks to Brian 🙄. Ok so here's my frustration with Kleio: I don't want to give any spoilers, but she wasn't very proactive at all when it came to Brian. Ma'am, how many times are you gonna repeat yourself? How many empty threats are you gonna make? Clearly this man is not getting it. He's literally manipulating your son. I'm not gonna lie, her laissez-faire attitude irked me. Yes Karma is a relentless bïťch, but someone should've checked Brian. But her and Ariel's drama-free union made up for the whole Brian situation…kinda. Arial was smart, laid back and an amazing teacher…and with locs too😍 yes please. This was a super fun read. No drama, just a frustrating ex who never got checked for jackass behavior.
Kleio just finalized a much needed divorce & she’s living her life that way she chooses—enters fineee a$$ Ariel.
Kleio had been through some weird controlling relationships in her life— the more I learned the more hands I wanted to throw. Bryan deserved all the smoke because he was trashhhhhh as a husband, coparent & father.
This book reminds me of the song Last Time by Ro James because Ariel happily did all of the things Kleio was missing out on.
Kleio & Mr. Ellis don’t care if they’re in public, they gets it IN
& I know it was eating that ex husband up because he was REALLLL stalker like.
I love that this is Older Woman/Young Man romance (5 year age gap). Ariel was patient and attentive to both Kleio & her son (as he should be). At first, I didn’t like how much space Bryan took up but I was happy to see Kleio continue to enforce her boundaries & not give her ex husband any more power of her life.
#AshleyDid I had no expectations for HotBox because as usual Ms. Ashley Nicole only gives you a few hours to secure your wig before she snatches your edges!!!
I love that Kleio did what needed to be done for herself with no regrets. Bryan needs to see someone about those mommy issues. Ariel was sexy and soooo sweet.
The storyline was unique, but relatable unfortunately even her family issues rang true for some...
#AnotherOne for Ashley Nicole!!! I loved everything about this book!
This book was a great read for me, striking a chord with experiences I've found relatable. Kleio's approach to dealing with her ex-husband was impressive and believable. My only gripe is that I wish the book had been longer. I was left wanting more of Ariel and Kleio’s dynamic, and I'm curious about how Jeremiah would handle his mom and Ariel's relationship moving forward.
Kleio is newly divorced after 14 years in an unaffectionate and stale marriage. Her Ex, Bryan is the worse, not only is he a mamma’s boy but he’s cold, self-absorbed and believes that intimacy should be had once a week on Thursdays, only in a bed, and no more than once. How could Kleio end up in a loveless marriage like this? Well her childhood wasn’t the best, matter fact her parents were hot garbage. I’m sure that the trauma her parents inflicted on her didn’t help her recognize the red flags that Bryan expertly gave out.
Celebrating her newly found freedom, Kleio is out for a night on the town with her best friend Yasmeen. When they arrive for R&B night at a new lounge in the area, Kleio spots a FINE and beautiful bouncer with the juiciest lips she’s ever seen on a man. On a dare she manages to finesse their way into the lounge for free with a pat down that most would pay to see. The night doesn’t end there but in the lounge’s office with said unnamed bouncer putting the final touches on the night’s celebration.
Imagine Kleio’s surprise when she and Bryan shows up at a parent teacher conference and the unnamed bouncer, Ariel who’s not really a bouncer is her son’s teacher. They both have been thinking about each other during their time apart. When they reconnect and decide to see where things go, we get nothing but 🌶🌶🌶🌶. Ariel and Kleio are getting it in wherever and whenever they can. He shows her what real intimacy and love looks like. Kleio can’t seem to catch a break though, he ex is bi-polar and doesn’t seem to understand exactly what DIVORCED means. He literally will try anything to remain a family including turning her son against her. 4.5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Bryan need his ass beat for being so bitter did the bare minimum in his marriage now he wanna act crazy. Ariel was a real man and showed Kleio how to be treated. I feel like Kleio let Bryan get away with too much.
As usual AshleyNicole brought us humor to break up the crazy! Kleio was tired of this man, this marriage and was out! She was free to live her life the way she wanted, for the first time, and she was beyond excited! Meeting Ariel on her first night out, was her beginners luck! The pat down scene was hilarious, and that back room action was 🔥! Seeing Ariel again at the school was shocking, but a pleasant surprise! Ariel! This man was all that! 😍 Although things moved quickly for he and Kleio, their chemistry was hot and the connection was authentic. He took the time to get to know her, listen to her, cater to her and make her feel special. He gave her the space to be vulnerable while she was navigating her new life, and she appreciated him so much! Kleio was used to being rejected and ignored. Having a man who was all about her was frightening, and exciting all at once! Now, Bryan! The hell was wrong with dude! He ain't want Kleio for real, he just wanted control! The passive aggressive behavior, then the unannounced pop ups, all them damn facetime calls, and altering of the visitation was crazy! But, why didn't Kleio do something about that? She was pissed when he would change ask to change his visits, but she would allow it! Even after learning how this man was poisoning your child's mind, you still allowed it? Ughhhh..... After learning of Kleio's backstory, I gave her a "little" grace. Her parents were trash! So, she wasn't able to learn some of the basic skills to know that she was being manipulated! But, then Bryan's crazy ass takes it up a notch, and begins stalking, snitching and planting more seeds into Jeremiah, to hurt Kleio! And she still did nothing!!!!! No cussing his ass out, no going over there and getting in his face! Come on momma bear, your cub needs protecting! 🤬🤯 I was glad that Ariel and Kleio found their one, but will they be able to live happily with this psycho on the loose? 😂 I really hope there is another story to wrap this up, because the ending left so much up in the air! Whew, these characters worked my nerves! But, I did enjoy the read! 👍👍
Imagine letting this sexy ass man slut you out in the best way possible in a back office of a club and then a month later finding out he's your son's teacher!??
That's exactly what happens to Kleio and Ariel. Kleio is coming off of a very toxic divorce, in fact in my opinion her ex husband, Bryan needs a major reality check and high key a restraining order.
HotBox is spicy, sexy and at tines chaotic but I loved watching Ariel and Kleio find their HEA.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a really cute story. Brian was a way bigger problem than was adequately addressed in the short story. That man was dangerous. Glad things worked out for Ariel and Kleio
Ashley isn’t very good at picking titles. Loved the book tho. Kleio was a bit too lenient on that ex-husband of hers tbh but I loved her so I’ll let it go
Ariel and Kleio were so spicy and hot to read about. I like that even with the way they initially met and hooked up, they didn't seem phased or put off by it. They had a strong attraction to one another and they leaned into and I loved it.
Kleio, even with her interesting past, was very intriguing to me. She desired to be loved and sought after and nurtured and all of the other things one loves from their spouse. Her ex, Bryan, was a complete weirdo. I didn't understand him at all. Poor little tink tink 🤭. I'm glad Kleio started to see him for the manipulator he was. It always amazes me how someone tries to weaponize another with their kids. He was spiteful and instead of just seeing how wrong he was, he tried to use their precious son. Such a loser. I hope we get an update so we can see if he gets it together or just stays lost🤦🏾♀️.
Kleio and Yasmeen are so great as sister friends. I love their bond.
Ariel is truly one of my fav male book characters. I was thinking, there has to be something wrong with him, right? Wrong. Given that, even with him teaching kids and he doesn't have any of his own and the situation with Jeremiah was new to him, he should've just told Kleio at least about him acting up in class from jump. He knew he'd messed up and was honest about why he didn't, so I guess he gets a pass 😏. I love that he listened to Kleio and didn't judge her by her past. He pushed her to move with the knowledge she now had bc of her past, and he loved all up on her to help her heal. I couldn't get enough him. Then, you add in his father, who took to Jeremiah as if he was his own grandchild; all I'm waiting on is the wedding, okay 😉.
While this had it's doses of drama, it was heavy on the hilarious tip that I've grown to love about AshleyNicole. She truly is in a league of her own.
I love that we got to see Rook in his element. I miss him and Zeneida crazy selves.
Amazing read. At this point, I expect nothing less from this dynamic author. Highly recommend.
I understand authors want to write stories about Black love with zero drama, and I commend them for it. HOWEVER! In SOME instances, there is always some form of drama that really can't be ignored, ESPECIALLY when an ex is in the picture.
Well, the author ignored ALL of it in this book. Red flags were flying all over the place but all of the adults felt the need to protect Bryan at all costs. Say what you want but that's EXACTLY what it was, when in reality, he should've had his head knocked off of his MF'n neck.
You know that saying, 'play stupid games, win stupid prizes'? Well, that's what Kleio and Ariel were doing. I'm not showing grace to ANY MF who's a danger to my child, father or not! Kleio gave Bryan way too much grace in this story, when she really should've been taking the necessary precautions to protect herself and her child. I don't understand why she didn't go to the police station and put his ass on papers, THEN to the courthouse to change the custody agreement. Like, how didn't this cross her mind? Instead, she kept giving him a pass, thinking a conversation saying the same thing, 'We are no longer together', would be enough. How many times do you have to tell someone this before you realize they aren't hearing it and more action needs to be taken? Just blatantly doing NOTHING. She didn't even say anything to his cousin Kendra, who was beyond disrespectful. The author just let her ass disappear in the wind. No phone call was made, text, pull up, NOTHING! Where TF they do that at?
Ariel wasn't any better. Negro, you are her son's teacher! When he told Kleio that the reason he didn't tell her about Jeremiah's actions in class was because he 'didn't think it was a big deal', she should've snapped TF off on him! Are you f*cking serious? My child is in your care and him showing out in school when that's never been a part of his character, is a huge ass deal sir and you should've called THE MOMENT it happened!
He never once asked Kleio if she wanted his assistance with dealing with Bryan. It didn't have to be physical, but damn, speak up on some man-to-man type shit! In fact, all he said was he hoped Bryan stopped looking in her windows. IDK, maybe he didn't want to be seen ass naked lol. It definitely would've made me think twice about him, especially since he KNEW what was going on.
I got tired of Kleio talking about Bryan and their marriage every other sentence. I would've been more interested in hearing about her job. If she didn't mention it, or she wasn't at the location once or twice throughout the story, I would've thought her entire identity was being a wife and Mom because she talked about Bryan so much. It was overkill.
It's a good beach read, or if you just want something to read in between time.
Black love for the WIN! 🤍🤎🫶🏾 we start off with Kleio celebrating her divorce with some girlfriends. She is single and ready to mingle. Living her life on her own terms. Not be failing in love with a dreadheaded teacher named Ariel. 😂 But that’s exactly what happened. Mr. Ariel Ellis walked into into her life and showed her what a real man is - in public and private. Pretty much any and everywhere 🥵🥵.
What I enjoyed the most about Ariel was how patient, understanding and attentive he was with not only her but with his students. He was smooth. Bryan, the bitter ex who couldn’t let go was a stalking her whole life and Kleio was not having it. I like that she didn’t let him stop herself from being free and constantly setting boundaries between the time. Bryan was a straight trasshhhh man, husband, and father. And I’m glad he finally got put in his place. This man literally went to lengths to do the absolute most.
This is my first Ashley Nicole book and it certainly is not going to be the last. I will recommend this book. I liked that it was a older woman/younger man, teacher and student’s parent romance novel. Kleio is a strong heroine who freed herself not once but twice from a controlling relationship. Ariel is such a beautiful man inside and out. I enjoyed Ariel showing Kleio what true love looks like. 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾
Keiko is a newly divorced woman and is ready to live her life! After growing up in an oppressive home and then living with a husband who rationed emotion, she’s very enthusiastic about raising her son and finding fun in her life. And, it’s on her night out to celebrate her divorce that she meets a man (no names exchanged) who shows what passion looks like. Ariel is an elementary school teacher and recently inherited a nightclub. It’s at that nightclub that he enjoys an amazing couple hours with a beautiful woman and the thought of her makes him smile for weeks. Imagine his surprise when she walks into his classroom as she’s the mother of one of his students! They’ve communicated in the past but only by email. Now he’s wondering how appropriate it is to lust after the mother of one of his students! Keiko and Ariel are cute together and believable. You can’t help but root for them. Keiko is dealing with a passive aggressive ex who’s family is suffocating and who believes that she’s the sole reason why they divorced. Worse, he’s trying to poison their sin against her. Ariel is there to show her the affection that she’s been hungry for, while also respecting her boundaries. The sex scenes are fun and hot. This is my 2nd book by this author and I am looking forward to digging through her catalog.
Kleio is my shero. She’s been released from the shackles of an unfulfilled marriage and is ready to live. It takes strength to move on and choose yourself and she did it TWICE. During her celebration, she meets Ariel who shows her that her desires are attainable. He is patient, considerate and intentional. I love to see it! This story has a powerful message. The world is full of Bryan’s, who think that financial stability and abstaining from domestic abuse automatically makes them a good man. Yet, they constantly manipulate and control women. I guess that’s better form of abuse huh? Bryan irritated me so much while reading, I really wanted to put the paws on him. If I reviewed purely off vibes, this book would be FIVE stars because I thoroughly enjoyed this story. But, one cannot live off vibes alone. I felt that the book started off really strong but as I read on, it fell off. I really wanted more of a resolution to the storyline of Bryan’s cousin Kendra. I mean, she ran her mouth. She should’ve been handled. Also, the conversation where she spoke to Bryan concerning their sons behavior should’ve been on page. I felt it would’ve been a great chance establish more boundaries and rules moving forward. Plus, the ending was abrupt. I get to the end and said “oh it’s done?”. I felt an epilogue would’ve made the story feel more complete. Other than that, I really enjoyed the story and I can’t wait for more from Ashley Nicole.
Now I absolutely enjoyed this read from AshleyNicole. Kleio & Ariel just did it for me. I will take an unproblematic black couple over so useless unnecessary ass drama that kinda takes away from the story. Ariel was everything that Kleio needed & she didn't even know it. He was patient, understanding & let's not forget he matched her energy in the bedroom. He wanted everything she had to give & he couldn't get enough. Kleio was so burned from her ex that she thought that Ariel would extinguish those things, but he lit the match & watched it burned right beside her. Ariel was so reassuring & had no problem expressing himself. Every insecurity Kleio laid at his feet, he would make sure to wrap it in a blanket & secure her. & Let's not forget that Kleio was a bomb ass mom. She loved her some Jeremiah. She always made sure that he knew she loved him, she poured into him & she made sure to let him know their new situation didn't mean anything had to change for him as far as love goes. Now my biggest issue with this book was how Bryan kept going low & Kleio didn't drag his ass to hell. I'm all for taking the high road & giving mfs grace. But Bryan just kept trying it & the last mf straw would have been you manipulating my child to make him think that I'm divorcing him too. That's the only thing stopping me from giving this book five stars. Because one thing for certain & two things for sure, women do NOT play about they babies.
I loved the lil catch up on Rook & Z. It's so funny to me that they are never going to get married, but they also ain't ever leaving each other 🥰💜
Man, I feel cheated!!! Didn’t see the end creeping on me..
This was a cute, no stress, no drama read to the point that while reading I finally realized that “the end” was there and it was actually done… No epilogue nothing!!! How I wished, there was an epilogue where maybe they got married, or she got pregnant, or he got to become principal and all that jazz, but the main attraction is to witness Karma visiting Bryan. Now that would have made this story perfect. That said, I truly started this story with a lean towards a 5 stars, but this ending took away everything and just left us on cold or pause. It was on the last line, before the dreaded “the end” that they both acknowledged that they are in love with each other, 🤬🤬🤬😤😤😤😱😱😱!!!! To me unacceptable…. This story was very relatable and at some point felt extremely real with the extra issues that comes with divorce… that was very well researched and written MS. AshleyNicole 👏👏👏👏
It was a great read. Certain situations that I thought would have been predictable weren’t for instance: the principal’s reaction, no fight between Brian and Ariel, I assumed Brian would attempt to kidnap her or the kid, the kid was never made aware that daddy was lying, I assumed they’d go back to court, and I just knew she was gonna get pregnant. I do wish the storyline with Brian was mo clearly resolved or flushed out, Yasmeen seemed very central to the story and then disappeared as did the cousin, and Jeremiah’s behavior turned way on and then off just like that. No nervousness or hesitancy in resuming his relationship with Ariel…. Just all in again even though visits with dad were still frequent, some loose end for me but I enjoyed it still
Overall i give this book a 3.5. I expected it to be a little bit more high heat with title called ,"hotbox". Too much time was spent on the backstory of kleio's marriage. I wanted to see more of the development of her relationship with Ariel. It seemed like every time they hung out they talked about Bryan. And let me not get started on him. He was a piece of work. I really wish kleio would have cursed him out one good time. Especially when he told their son he could curse his teacher. The end seemed kind of abrupt. I didn't expect a HEA, but at least a little more about the relationship.
“The box was hot. On fire even. I wanted to jump his bones so bad, but I was holding back. We'd get there.” Kleio deserved every touch, lick, suck, kiss, thrust, attention, affection, hour, minute and second she got after divorcing Bryan. She put up with a level of deprivation that was abusive while married to him. And he had the nerve to try her afterwards the way that he did with his miserable and bitter self. Ariel was the one who should’ve been pat down because he had the weapons to cover Kleio in every area. He filled her every need and it was wonderful. I enjoyed this read!
This was sooo refreshing but I think it was because of everything Kleio went thru from her parents to her marriage. Her epiphany was definitely her breakthrough. Like she said she already had found herself before she got divorced so she already knew who she was and what she wanted and what she would not tolerate. Her meeting with Ariel was super sexy and definitely something sooo smooth. I loved the laughs this gave me and the conversations that were had between the two. The best thing though is the way Kleio raises Jeremiah, she holds him accountable and talks to him not at him. I love black love for sure!!!
I LOVED Ariel and Kleio's story. Bryan got on my damn nerves, he was a straight pain in the a** and could DEFINITELY catch these hands 😤🤬!! I really liked how Ariel continuously reassured Kleio when her insecurities reared their ugly heads. He was attentive, caring, mindful etc…. I hope we get an update on Ariel and Kleio in the future. Please continue doing what you're doing and giving us these bangin a** stories about beautiful black love!!
The ending made the journey worth it. I was happy with how everything turned out. It felt a little slow leading up to that, though. I’m a big fan of AshleyNicole’s work. This book didn’t have the same page-turner energy that I’m used to from her. I was hoping that the story would pick up and deliver some fireworks. It was interesting enough to keep going. Overall, it was a decent read.
Loved this but AshleyNicole you ain't have to do us like that but you did LOL! I know it has to come to an end but DANG!! Anyway I loved the characters I could really relate with them. Kleio and Yasmeen friendship was awesome , Ariel was sent from above and was everything Kleio needed that horrible Ex of hers was terrible will I think I said enough can't wait to read what Miss AshleyNicole has in store for us next.
