This work is an in-depth review of the long and complex story of this intriguing site. Over 100 old maps and pictures, along with a review of 300 years of historical records from various archives provide the reader with vivid eyewitness accounts of how the Alamo looked and evolved, together with the rich human history that has taken place there. Included in the book are six color birds-eye views by the author.
Some excellent speculative overhead paintings of the Alamo and environs at different times are not the only highlights of this volume, which also includes a large number of rare photos and well written text tracing the history of the mission, surrounding lands and the town/city of San Antonio. The book also includes an index as a handy finding aid, as well as then-and-now comparison photography as well as an appendix with drawings detailing some of the archaeological work done regarding the Alamo.
I picked this book up on a recent trip to the Alamo two summers ago. I am still in awe when I see this landmark and remember the history associated with it. We did the tour and rediscovered all that the Alamo has to offer....and then I heard Phil Collins narrating the battle that took place and describing the events leading up to the Alamo and the battle that took place. Well apparently Mr. Collins is one of the Researchers and contributors to the historical site! who knew! this book is chalk full of everything you would want to know about the Alamo and even has picture diagrams!
