There were some real gems in this collection. It was worth reading for the opening essay alone.

This book of scientific essays contained some very interesting writing, but didn't quite hang together as a readable anthology. The remit was too loose (err 'all science'?) to constitute a theme of any kind. Additionally, though the historial range from which the essays were taken did allow some very famous names to be featured, a lot of the older theories have now been superceded - this lends itself to disregarding a lot of the book as merely a curio.
