(Arabic: جوزيف ميرفي) Joseph Murphy was a Divine Science minister and author.
Murphy was born in Ireland, the son of a private boy's school headmaster and raised a Roman Catholic. He studied for the priesthood and joined the Jesuits. In his twenties, an experience with healing prayer led him to leave the Jesuits and move to the United States, where he became a pharmacist in New York (having a degree in chemistry by that time). Here he attended the Church of the Healing Christ (part of the Church of Divine Science), where Emmet Fox had become minister in 1931.
In the mid 1940s, he moved to Los Angeles, where he met Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes, and was ordained into Religious Science by Holmes in 1946, thereafter teaching at the Institute of Religious Science. A meeting with Divine Science Association president Erwin Gregg led to him being reordained into Divine Science, and he became the minister of the Los Angeles Divine Science Church in 1949, which he built into one of the largest New Thought congregations in the country. In the next decade, Murphy married, earned a PhD in psychology from the University of Southern California and started writing. After his first wife died in 1976, he remarried to a fellow Divine Science minister who was his longstanding secretary. He died in 1981.
Overview: Another feel good motivational self-help book that is almost similar to the same author’s most popular book: ‘The power of your subconscious mind’ The best part of reading this book is that the chapters are so nicely segregated hence it is easier to simply leave it at any point by bookmarking it and continue it from there sometime later on, not sure how many would understand the significance of this feature but for people like me who likes to read very occasionally, this kinda segregation is something that’s very much useful for us. Another best part of this book is that every chapter has a TL;DR in the form of ‘points to remember’ so you don’t even need to read this book in full. And the worst part of this book is that the content is almost repetitive and at times it feels really awkward to even believe the paranormal stuff that it entails in some parts, not knowing if the book is really non-fictional or should we ignore those parts as hallucinations by the author considering just those parts as fictional, it’s hard to say. And there are verses from Bible spread all over the book, not something that most non-christians would prefer. But, overall, it’s a good read for those who needs dosage of motivation every now & then.
My Notes & excerpts from the book: "HOW HINDUS WALK ON FIRE WITHOUT BEING BURNED" About how hindus walk on fire in a trance state
"you are not selling your age or gray hair; you are selling your talents, knowledge, abilities and experience, which you have gathered through the years. Age is not the flight of years; it is the dawn of wisdom. A good point to remember also is that all the water in the ocean will not sink even a small ship if the water doesn’t get inside it. Likewise, all the problems, challenges and difficulties you may have cannot sink you as long as they do not get inside you. It was Shakespeare who said: Our doubts are traitors And make us lose the good we oft might win By fearing to attempt . —MEASURE FOR MEASURE" Good one
"there is a universal law of action and reaction. The action is your conscious-mind decision and the reaction is the automatic reaction of your subconscious according to the nature of your decision." Action/reaction - conscious/subconscious
"There are tremendous powers within your subconscious mind. If you are seeking a solution to any problem under the sun, gather all the information you can regarding the solution. In other words, try and solve it with your conscious mind, and then when you come up against a stone wall, turn your request over to your subconscious mind with faith and confidence, and you will find that it will gather all the necessary data. After synthesizing the answer, it will present itself full-blown into your conscious mind."
"The child believed implicitly. You must become as a little child when you pray, in the sense that a child is not so critical, analytical or indifferent."
"THE POWER OF A WOMAN’S LOVE The August, 1969, edition of Fate Magazine contained the following article: In the Spring of 1968 a five-foot, 110 pound woman successfully battled a 1,500 pound car for her father’s life. Janet K. Stone, aged twenty, is the daughter of Robert H. Stone of Covina, California. He was making repairs on his car when the jack slipped and the car fell on him. Janet heard his cries and found him pinned under the auto. In an incredible upsurge of strength, she lifted the car, freeing her father, then carried him to her own car and drove him to the hospital. This young daughter’s love for her father and her intense desire to save his life at all costs seized her mind and caused the power of the Almighty to respond to her focal point of attention, enabling her to perform the herculean task that saved her father’s life. Remember, all the power of the Infinite is within you, enabling you to do extraordinary things in all walks of life." A sample story of how our potential is portrayed in critical times
"The law of averages is simply the mind of the masses of humanity, which, for the most part, believes in failure, lack, limitation and misfortune of all kinds. This mass mind is governed in great part by traditional beliefs; for this reason, it is mostly negative. This young man was down on himself, and I explained to him clearly that if he did not think for himself, he would automatically be a victim of the mass mind, which impinges on the receptive medium of his mind and does all his thinking for him, resulting in negation, lack and misery of all kinds." The law of averages
“Do the thing you are afraid to do and the death of fear is certain.” Nice proverb
bus is a symbol of sex Volkswagen logo 😂
"Marcus Aurelius said, “Our life is what our thoughts make it.” Emerson said, “A man is what he thinks all day long.”"
"When you deposit an acorn in the soil, the complete pattern of the oak is already in the acorn. The idea of the full-grown oak must exist in the seed; otherwise, it would never be objectified. The seed undergoes dissolution in the soil, and the subjective wisdom proceeds to build up the sturdy oak tree. When a psychic tunes in on your mind, your thoughts are like seeds and, your mind being timeless and space less, your thoughts and their manifestations are one in mind. In other words, your mind looks upon the thought as completed. Thoughts are things. A good psychic or medium sees the complete manifestation of your ideas before they are objectified on the screen of space." Hmm
"telekinetic energy, i.e., the ability to move ponderable objects without the usual physical contact and effort" Telekinetic energy
This book changed my outlook mentally, spiritually, emotionally, domestically.. I feel at peace and most confident. At one point, I’d given up on myself and God, but he led me to this book and I’m changed forever. I look forward to reading the next one.
It’s a must read from Dr Murphy, if you know his philosophy this books will increase your knowledge. If you are new to his work, maybe read another book.
This book is for spiritual minds and whomever has a belief about subconscious mind's miracle.. book is full of experiences and stories from different people. Definitely book is suitable for morning reads
The last chapter, How Telepsychics Sharpens the Powers of your Mind, is mind blowing to me because it deals with the possibility of making actual contact with the spirits of the departed. It kept me thinking 🤔
W kołko powtarzane historyjki o wątpliwej prawdziwości bez jakichkolwiek odwołań do nauki i badań.
Joseph Murphy to niesamowity człowiek.
Amazing read. This book contains lots of small stories of the people who used this technique in their life to get something done. Totally changed my thinking process..
Too repetitive, just hocus pocus, using fancy sounding words to convey the same idea which could be a 2-3 page article. More or less the same content of the previous works of the writer.
Pros: 1. The book strongly advises us to think well. 2. The reported technique is easy to do. Cons: 1. if I take my dream seriously, it will laugh at me. I had a personal experience. I thought, what if my dream came true? You can't rely on your dreams. 2. I wonder how the actions of people will be who are disappointed after their so-called "prayers" in this book. 3. I doubt that people will be mentally retards, after too much imagination and expectations. Because it will be difficult for people to accept reality after lengthy forced fantasies. 4. After all, this is pseudoscience, not science.
Note: Don't be impressed by the power of telephysics behind the hind festival mentioned in the book. I have been well familiar with that festival for almost 24 years. The real power behind the practitioners of the Hindu festival is persistence and long training.
