We're coming up to the end of the initial series. In this volume, Yugi has to deal with the most serious rock 'em sock 'em robots since Real Steel, Anzu deals with an explosive romantic problem, a soul-sucking game threatens Yugi, Jonouchi has another encounter with his old gang and the king of the card game bishies (at least as far as this original series is concerned. Following games are a whole other ballgame) appears.
I kind of wonder what was going on as this part of the series was being originally created. I feel like the growing interest in the duel monsters aspect of the series had to be rising, jsut based on the timing, but this volume almost seems to be trying to get desperately back to the magic of the first few volumes ... with varying results.
The fighting robots story feels like a retread. It has aspects of the tamagotchi story, the sneaker story ... a few others. I feel like it's trying to show how much stronger Yugi has become, but when his other self comes to the forefront constantly, it's hard to know what to attribute to Yugi.
The amusement park story with Anzu is pretty cute. Well, except for when the bombs start going off. But it's some cute characterization stuff.
Next up is the dragon cards. The most notable thing ab out this is a truly interesting (yet in retrospect it should have been obvious) use of the series' main conceit.
The gang story is a lot less intense than the earlier one -- that happens when you trade out your lethal stun guns for the truly terrifying weapons -- yo-yos. But it does give us one of the greatest lines in anything ever:
"You don't aim yo-yos at people! You aim them at the ground! Think about that ... in the hospital!"
(Seriously, "think about that ... in the hospital" is still regularly referenced between my sister and I when someone is doing something dumb.)
And finally we get to say hello to new transfer student Bakura. He's friendly and popular with the girls and loves games, which lets him fit right in with Yugi's gang ... but there's something off about him. Unfortunately for our heroes, that something weird is evident to us, but not to them, as they visit his home to play, essentially, Dungeons and Dragons with miniatures and everything. That, however, is a story for the final volume.
