Yu-Gi-Oh! #6

Yu-Gi-Oh!, Vol. 6: Monster Fight!

Rate this book
When Yugi beat Kaiba at a card game, little did he know the consequences: a trip through Kaiba's "Death T" — a theme park of death — and a series of evil spells against Yugi's family. It doesn't help that Kaiba's little brother also has a score to settle.

The Good: More monster duels, more suspenseful moments, more of Yugi's alter ego...this is just what we've come to expect from this franchise. Even the ending left me breathless for the next installment. It's pretty much good stuff, except...

The Bad: Why must Téa/Anzu be used as eye candy? I know she is the lone female, but, putting her in a tiny bikini is the exact opposite of what they should be doing: showing that she has what it takes to keep up with the boys.

Content Concerns:
Sex: Someone is called a pervert; a guy's reaction to seeing a girl in a bikini. 4/5
Nudity: A girl in a bikini; shirtless guys. 3/5
Language: Symbols are used to imply swearing. 4/5
Violence: Fantastical monster duels and a real-life fight. 3/5
Drugs: None. 5/5
Frightening/Intense Scenes: A kid is attacked; the ending is rather suspenseful. 3/5

Conclusion: For the most part, this is Yu-Gi-Oh! as I've come to expect it...which is a good thing.

Score: 4/5

We're coming up to the end of the initial series. In this volume, Yugi has to deal with the most serious rock 'em sock 'em robots since Real Steel, Anzu deals with an explosive romantic problem, a soul-sucking game threatens Yugi, Jonouchi has another encounter with his old gang and the king of the card game bishies (at least as far as this original series is concerned. Following games are a whole other ballgame) appears.

I kind of wonder what was going on as this part of the series was being originally created. I feel like the growing interest in the duel monsters aspect of the series had to be rising, jsut based on the timing, but this volume almost seems to be trying to get desperately back to the magic of the first few volumes ... with varying results.

The fighting robots story feels like a retread. It has aspects of the tamagotchi story, the sneaker story ... a few others. I feel like it's trying to show how much stronger Yugi has become, but when his other self comes to the forefront constantly, it's hard to know what to attribute to Yugi.

The amusement park story with Anzu is pretty cute. Well, except for when the bombs start going off. But it's some cute characterization stuff.

Next up is the dragon cards. The most notable thing ab out this is a truly interesting (yet in retrospect it should have been obvious) use of the series' main conceit.

The gang story is a lot less intense than the earlier one -- that happens when you trade out your lethal stun guns for the truly terrifying weapons -- yo-yos. But it does give us one of the greatest lines in anything ever:

"You don't aim yo-yos at people! You aim them at the ground! Think about that ... in the hospital!"

(Seriously, "think about that ... in the hospital" is still regularly referenced between my sister and I when someone is doing something dumb.)

And finally we get to say hello to new transfer student Bakura. He's friendly and popular with the girls and loves games, which lets him fit right in with Yugi's gang ... but there's something off about him. Unfortunately for our heroes, that something weird is evident to us, but not to them, as they visit his home to play, essentially, Dungeons and Dragons with miniatures and everything. That, however, is a story for the final volume.

Volume 6 of Yu-Gi-Oh was quite interesting. The first chapter was definitely insane with Joey being on that game show, and Dark Yugi causing the show to go bankrupt lol.

And the next chapter that had the Monster Fighters was pretty cool, I kinda wish some of these games that the characters play were real, monster fighters seems like it would be fun.

The chapter with Yugi and Anzu on a date was kinda cute, and funny with the fact that Anzu kept trying to put herself in danger to bring out Dark Yugi.

The Evil Dragon Cards and the whole you lose and you lose your soul as well was insanity I hope Yugi locked that up in a safe spot where no one can ever play it again.

Joey and Yugi fighting Joey's old gang was kinda cool, I like the way Dark Yugi out smarted the henchman.

The final chapters with the transfer student was weird and his pendent being similar to Yugi's was crazy and he had an evil split personality that put people in comas and trapped their souls in game pieces. Insane.

This is where Yu-Gi-Oh finds a formula that sticks, with have to chapter stories. Using the first chapter as set up, saves a lot of otherwise forgettable stories, as the Hirutani rematch as none of the suspense as the first one. The other bad chapter is the Anzu centric one, as it makes her a bit ditzy and overall fells weird, as her reaction during the chapter is not a human reaction to a terrorist attack.

The good comes in the end, and that is the introduction to Bakura. Here they take the time to properly introduce the villain, setting u a complicated game and also utilizing the entire cast. This is Yu-Gi-OH at its finest, and saves and otherwise weak volume.

And as mentioned again, the art is amazing.
The violence and the severity of the punishments have increased! a 15 year old, straight up lost his soul.

ACTUAL PLOT IS HAPPENING! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

Six issues in and we are finally getting more actual plot, not sen since Shadi! That's right, we've got Bakura! The first stories are nice, some good stand-outs (including Jonouchi being a badass and Anzu... intentionally becoming the damsel in distress so she can meet a hot dude), but I'm most excited for Bakura. It's cool to see someone like Yugi, but with an alter-ego that doesn't protect his friends and instead kills and steals the souls of his friends.

Me-okay ill read some more weird and repetitive(not completely bad but just old) games yami has with some random weird haired dudes.

me 5 seconds later when I realise that bakura is on the character sheet- OMG!! Look likes someone's gonna be speed reading till 3am so she can get to pag 151!!

I am so happy i cant describe how happy bakura coming in makes me. I like how the manga makes yami bakura. I hate him slightly less now. His idea of affection is very warped but its still usable.

"The bomber challenged us to a card game!! Who's a good card player? Is there a gamer here?"p.58

In Volume 6, fresh off of the completion of the 'Death-T' arc, we return to normal for a little while. Or, at least, as normal as things ever get for our heroes.

We're back to the 'villain of the week' stories each centered around a different game that 'dark Yugi' has to win in order to save the lives and limbs of Yugi and co.

By far the most absurd and therefore also one of the most iconic is a chapter where we learn of a gang that beats people up with yo-yos. But wait! This gang is under the control of the leader of Joey/Jonouchi's old gang! Despite having the least menacing premise (yo-yos? We're supposed to find yo-yos threatening?! Like, sure, you could knock someone's teeth out with one and possibly give them a concussion, but it still just seems so absurd), this chapter is the most rooted in reality, and even Dark Yugi doesn't feel much of an urge to use magic, much less a penalty game, to get himself and Joey/Jonouchi out of trouble.

The other notorious episode from this volume is the one where Yugi and Téa/Anzu go on a date to an amusement park and we get this incredibly cursed image of Yugi staring sidelong at Téa/Anzu in a bikini:
description

Now, as much as this entire sequence ostensibly only exists as fan service, I posit that this, and other such moments, actually make manga Yugi feel like more of a real person than anime Yugi does. Anime Yugi already doesn't get that much to do, and when he's on screen he's often either dishing exposition or being your stock 'naive nice boy'. At least by seeing him ogle Téa/Anzu we know there's something going on up there. Could have been literally anything else, but this is what we got, so we're stuck with it.

Similarly, we get a little bit more Téa/Anzu characterization. When a terrorist announces he's placed a bomb somewhere in the park and will blow it up unless he's defeated in a twisted game of Solitaire, Téa sees this as an opportunity to draw out Dark Yugi, who she's decided she's got the hots for, and she runs off to put herself purposefully in harm's way so that he'll be forced to save her. -- Hey, I didn't say the characterization made her look better .

Finally, in the last chapter, we get introduced to transfer student Ryou Bakura who is immediately established as canonically very hot since he is instantly graced with a legion of fan girlies who tell us so.

But our boy Ryou is a teensy bit mysterious because even though he gets along well with Yugi and co., he won't agree to play games with them even though he would clearly really like to, and there's an intriguing little tidbit about how his transfer to their school had something to do with a game gone wrong. We'll find out exactly what that means in short order --but not in this volume.

At the very end, our heroes invite themselves over to Ryou's apartment to wrestle him into submission i.e. play an RPG with them, and we finally get Dark Bakura on-screen for the first time after a tantalizing little bit of background about the Millennium Ring.

Interesting bit of lore: it's not until realizing that his current host (Ryou) knows the holder of the Millennium Puzzle that he decides to make the arrangement permanent and we get the grotesque image of him embedding the Ring into Ryou's chest. This is also where it's established just how different Ryou's relationship to the Ancient Egyptian Spirit inhabiting his body is when compared to Yugi's. While at this point Yugi hasn't gotten to officially 'meet' Dark Yugi, he at least seems to understand that whatever that's all about, the spirit of the puzzle is there to protect him and those he loves. Ryou on the other hand, not only seems horrified to discover he's been sharing his body with a ghost, but gets forcibly shoved aside and controlled by that ghost, who is not at all concerned with its host's well-being.

At the very, very end, we begin the 'should really have been in the DM anime because it would have been cool and also established the plot better' Monster World arc.

To be frank, this volume of Yu-Gi-Oh! was rather disappointing. That might seem a little harsh to some, but there really is nothing to get excited about in this book. Gangs that use yo-yo's as weapons, ancient Chinese card games with a nobody and a game of Rock'em Sock'em Robots. These meaningless standalone stories are fine, but they just don't cut the mustard for me any more. I want something more, a story with a little substance.

Thankfully, this wish was met in the volume's final chapter, with the author introducing his next major storyline arc. This game may be a basic D&D clone, but the mention of the millennium items and the stories dark twist definitely got my pulse racing. At least this leaves the reader with a little glimmer of hope awaiting for them on the horizon.

I must say, I cant wait for the next chapter! 3/5

P.S

A couple of side notes.

1. My copy of this manga was badly produced with some pages having lines of dialogue cut off by the guillotine. I'm not sure if this was a one off or if the Manga company are a little sloppy with their work.

2. At the end of this book there is a D&D mini game for readers to play. This looks really cool. I cant wait to play it!

The sixth volume of Yu-Gi-Oh sines by introducing recurring character Bakura but finds itself bogged down by barely decent stories. In Vol 6 we're treated to stories about a rock'em, sock'em type game that sweeps the school, Anzu and Yugi going on an explosive date, an ancient dragon card game, deadly yo-yo gangs, and the final two chapters introduce Bakura and his Monster World game that the last volume of the original YGO series (at least in English translation where Duelist was its own series).

The Bakura storyline is very interesting as he has his own Millennium item and Monster World is a fun Dungeons and Dragons-esque type game that we'll see played across nine chapters. Bakura is actually one of my favorite characters in YGO so I'm quite biased in enjoying his introduction. The other stories in this collection range from decent to not great. Many will find them to be a mixed bag. However I would recommend continuing on with this series as the seventh volume is quite the ride.

I know this whole thing is based around games, but yo-yo's? Of all things? That just seems ridiculous, and incredibly goofy. Also, "reusing" this particular former foe is also a choice. I was entertained throughout most of the volume, but it's impossible to take the story even a little bit serious.
Lastly, I'm not looking forward to whatever is going to happen next, mostly because it's really not that fun to read about people playing the equivalent to DnD, at least not in this format.

If there's anything to learn from Anzu. No matter how badly you want the man you love to appear before you don't put yourself in life threatening situations to make him appear. I mean maybe to her it was worth it.🤗
My favourite part of this manga is we are introduced to Ryo Bakura and Yami Bakura. Yami Bakura is my all time favourite villain and yugioh character. His introduction is so bad ass! 🖤

A pretty forgettable volume except at the end where we get the original introduction of Bakura into the series and it is pretty good. As we see unlike Yugi, which acts as a protector, this one actually likes the taunt and mess with Bakura which is a pretty good contrast between the two.
