The overlord has been ridding the world of people who can use the Breath, but one woman and her daughter have taken upon themselves to rid the world of the overlord.
This book has its share of surprises. In some ways it is written in the tradition of swords and sorcery, but there are no heroes here. Just an man past his prime, once a leader, now a drunk, with too many ugly things in his past. His wife, who just wants things to be normal for her daughter in ways they weren't for her, their daughter and their son. A son given up for dead a long time ago.
Everyone does what they need to do, and it's not always pretty.
The plot had something going for it in a couple places, but most of the time it was simply an example of why some books don't get published by people other than their authors.
Pros: Strong story. Intricate magic function, and very interesting. Sturdy characters that have notable growth, and they are relatable.
Cons: Repetative. The author has favorite words that are overused and often in the same sentences and passages. Makes for clunky reading. Numerous loop holes, but not too large or distracting. The largest downfall to this story was the extreme number of POV jumps. It jarred me from the story numerous times, and I felt that the story could have been stronger following only two characters.
Overall I did enjoy the story. I would recommend it despite my irritation with certain aspects. Also note that the author does an amazing job reading the audio version.
