A sequel in name only to Heath's earlier and better "Clerycastle," set in the Oregon coastal enclave of the American branch of the McClery family, the novel follows a young actress who agrees to pretend to be married to scion Kirby McClery in order to thwart a family curse. Despite quotations from Shakespeare, which are usually not found in gothic romances, the novel is strangely uncompelling--and made worse by an unpleasant racism that exoticizes women of color--which is very surprising and distressing to find in a novel written as late as 1970.
