عنوان کامل‌تر کتاب درواقع باید چنین باشد: روش مطالعه‌ی ادبیات و نقدنویسی در سه بخش شعر، داستان و نمایشنامه. گمان می‌کنم برای شروع، کتاب فوق‌العاده کاربردی و مناسبی باشد و در هیچ کدام از سه بخش کتاب، حتی یک خط هم گزافه‌گویی و مطلب بدون استفاده ندیدم (برای منِ آماتور البته). کتاب از جنبه‌های مختلفی برای من بسیار مفید واقع شد. اول اینکه نگرش من را به جزئیات و عناصر داستان از اساس تغییر داد، اینکه چگونه باید مانند یک کارآگاه از کوچکترین سرنخی بزرگترین و کلی‌ترین مفاهیم را بیرون کشید. دوم آنکه کمکم کرد از داستان‌هایی که می‌خوانم لذت و استفاده‌ی بیشتری ببرم و سوم آنکه یاد گرفتم اگر قرار باشد درباره‌ی کتابی بنویسم، این نوشته چگونه نباشد: یعنی فهمیدم مثلا در تحلیل و تفسیر حتی دو،سه خطی یک داستان، شعر یا نمایشنامه، هرگونه خاطره‌نویسی، شخصی‌گویی و بیان تصاویر ذهنی اکیدا ممنوع است

این کتاب، دیدگاه خوبی درباره‌ی شیوه‌ی نقد عملی و جست‌وجو و بررسی تضادهای متن به آدم می‌ده و برای شروع نقدنویسی، کتاب خوب و ساده‌ایه. البته به نظرم این مشکل رو داره که قدری نقدنویسی رو ساده‌انگاری می‌کنه و اینطور جلوه می‌ده که نقد یعنی پیدا کردن تضادهای مفهومی؛ در صورتی‌که فکر می‌کنم این تضادهای موجود در متن، فقط بخش کوچکی از نقد ادبی رو شامل می‌شن. به هرحال برای کسی که تازه می‌خواد با شیوه‌ی نقد عملی آشنا بشه، راهگشاست.
توی این کتاب، «نقد عملی» در سه حوزه‌ی شعر، داستان و نمایشنامه با مثال، بررسی و آموزش داده می‌شه؛ یعنی نویسنده، یک تکه‌متن از یک شاعر یا نویسنده‌ی برجسته میاره و بعد به نقد اون تکه‌متن می‌پردازه. بخش شعرش چون نمونه‌هاش از اشعار انگلیسیه، ممکنه برای خواننده‌ی فارسی‌زبان قدری ملال‌آور باشه و سخت‌فهم؛ اما بخش داستانش جذابه. من متأسفانه بخش نمایشنامه‌اش رو نخوندم.
در کل می‌شه گفت کتابی کاربردیه بدون اینکه خودش رو درگیر اصطلاحات تخصصی و مباحث تئوری‌ پیچیده کنه.

پ‌ن: ترجمه‌ی کتاب رو خیلی دوست نداشتم. به نظرم قدری سرد و بی‌روح و ماشینی اومد. البته در فهم مطالب کتاب خیلی مشکلی ایجاد نمی‌کرد.

این کتاب ظاهراً برای دانشجویان ادبیات و کسانی که میخوان مقاله‌ای تحلیلی روی یک اثر ادبی بنویسند نوشته‌شده.
ولی در کل به شما آموزش میده که چطوری موقع خوندن یک اثر (شعر، رمان یا نمایشنامه) تفکر انتقادی داشته‌باشید و به این شیوه با درک بیشتر اثر، بیشتر ازش لذت ببرید.

سه و نیم ستاره.
کتاب شامل سه بخش شعر, نثر و نمایشنامه است. قطعن اگر از بخش ۱ شروع کرده بودم دیگه نمیتونستم ادامه ش بدم! چون در مورد شعرهای انگلیسی بود که برای من خیلی ناملموسه. مخصوصن وقتی شعر فارسی این قدر جذاب و عمیقه. بخش ۲ و ۳ واقعن خوب و کاربردی بودند. به خصوص بررسی هایی که روی مثال ها انجام داده بود. اما کتاب برای دانشجویان ادبیات انگلیسی نوشته شده بود و هدفش جواب دادن دانشجوها به سوالات نقد عملی بود (که توی امتحان یک متن چند پاراگرافی میدن و ازشون میخان یه مقاله ی کوتاه در موردش بنویسن). به خاطر همین مدل کتاب شبیه کتاب کنکورهای خودمون بود و نمی‌گذاشت بهش ۴ ستاره بدم!

i'm going to give this a 2 because there were some interesting things, but overall it's a no. i usually go with a little bit of a hope when i start reading criticism but this one bored me to hell and it felt so dragged and i felt like literally everything was just a repetition of what i've read before.

Wow, a non-fiction book review for once. This book was written by lecturers from my university, John Peck and Martin Coyle. Actually, I think John Peck has retired now, but Martin Coyle is still going strong. I just had him for a first year module, so I know he's brilliant. In his lectures he talks about the ideas they set forth in this book a lot, so it does make a good companion to the course.

It's also generally a good book for getting to grips with practical criticism generally. I feel it's particularly strong on analysis of poetry, although I've also had the benefit of Martin Coyle's lectures on that front. The book offers tips both on how to get hold of a poem and what to do once you have a hold of it, and describes simple ways to write a good, clear, concise essay. There are also examples of essays written by real first year students, with explanations of their strengths and weaknesses.

I also have How To Study A Poet by John Peck, which seems to have much the same kind of advice in it, so I don't think you need to read both. So far, I'd favour Practical Criticism of the two, because of the range of advice it offers, but I haven't finished How To Study A Poet, yet.

روش مطالعه‌ی ادبیات و نقد نویسی
کتاب روش مطالعه‌ی ادبیات و نقدنویسی نوشته‌ی نویسندگان انگلیسی جان و مارتین کویل است. این کتاب را دکتر سرور السادات جواهریان به فارسی برگردانده است. انتشارات مروارید آن را در ایران به چاپ رسانده است. نسخه‌ی که من مطالعه کردم چاپ پنجم این کتاب است که در سال ۱۳۹۸ هجری خورشیدی به چاپ رسیده است.
این کتاب از سه بخش عمده تشکیل شده است. در بخش نخست، در مورد چگونه نوشتن مقاله‌ی نقد عملی در مورد شعر است. در بخش دوم، روی نثر با ارایه‌ چند نمونه بحث شده است و در بخش سوم هم نوشتن نقد عملی را روی نمایش‌نامه به بحث گرفته است.
هرچند نمونه‌های این کتاب تماما اشعار و نثر انگلیسی است؛ اما بالای نمونه‌های زبان فارسی هم قابل تطبیق است.
هدف این کتاب، آشنا ساختن دانشجویان رشته‌ی ادبیات به نوشتن نقد ادبی- عملی است.
به گونه‌ی خلاصه، نویسندگان توصیه برای نوشتن هر مقاله‌ی نقد عملی این روش‌ها را به کار بگیرید. اول، خواندن و اندیشیدن در مورد نوشته و یا شعر و باهم نمایش‌نامه. دوم، بخش بندی آن به چند بخش. سوم، نوشتن پاراگراف در مورد بخش‌های جدا شده. چهارم نتیجه‌گیری و جمع‌بندی برداشت و مقاله‌ی نوشته شده.
این کتاب، رهنمایی مفیدی برای نوشتن یک مقاله‌ی ساده در مورد رمان، شعر، داستان کوتاه و نمایش نامه است.

This is an excellent 'how to' guide to Practical Criticism, covering - at diminishing length, to avoid repetition - poetry, prose and drama. The authors introduce a method, whch is to identify some central tension in the text and use the commentary to develop that thesis. They illustrate this approach with a number of exemplar readings. Along the way there are some striking observations, and I feel I emerge from the book a better reader myself. The two main traps in a Practical Criticism paper are to spend ages simply summarising the content, or conversely to ignore it altogether and produce a pointlesss list of observations of rhyme scheme and local details ('there is alliteration on line 3'). The approach espoused here will help to combat both vices and enable students - and teachers - to see a text as a whole, and then relate details to that whole in a meaningful and useful way. In the best of all possible worlds one might want something less like a formula, more free-wheeling perhaps. But students are taught methodical approaches to problems ine very other subject, so why not English as well? The mystique around literary texts is distinctly unhelpful to those having to write on unseens in timed conditions, and I welcome this book's sensible dispelling of mystery! To be read alongside the same authors' 'Literary Terms and Criticism'. Recommended.

Essential read: I was recommended this for my Critical Reading class - particularly as someone who's never enjoyed/understood poetry that much, it was a real eye opener (or should that me mind-opener?). It was so easy to apply the ideas to any given poem as a starting point. It was also split very well into sections that you can dip in and out of, so for example the section on how to formulate a response to an essay question, you don't need to read it all, or chronologically.

I remember not liking this book at uni but it came in handy often enough so 'it was ok'.
