Maisey Yates stories always depress me on some level. I guess it's the streak of melancholy - not angst - that runs through her stories. In this one, heroine is a former piano protege whose own mother took all of her money and left her with nothing. The hero hates the heroine's mother, a long-time mistress of his father, so he thinks a marriage of convenience with the daughter will (a) put his father in his place and (b) convince his grandfather to turn the running of the family business over to him.

As far as HP plans, that one is fairly lucid. What didn't work was the virgin heroine's poor-me attitude and learned helplessness. It's repeated over and over that the heroine had no life because she was practicing all the time and when she lost her career she did . . . nothing. The hero tries to convince her she can acquire other skills (inputting data in the computer) and . . . I get it she's immature - but come on. Data Entry makes her feel empowered?

The hero blows hot and cold with the heroine. He doesn't want sex to complicate their relationship, but they go to bed anyway. He feels sorry for the heroine and hates himself for that since he starts to see her having the same personality as his suicidal mother. *shudder* Also, I was tired of his mansplaining and pep talks by the end of the story.

No one gets their comeuppance in this story. Not the heroine's mother. Not the hero's father. The H/h have decided to be happy with their backstories that haven't changed at all and the heroine is writing music again. I'm sure they are melancholy tunes because life pretty much sucks in Maisey Yates world.

Once upon a time, Noelle was a girl who had everything, an exceptional talent, adoring fans, time in the spotlight. And now it's all gone. Even before her mother ran off with all of her money, it wasn't perfect. All the stress of practicing the piano, the endless tours, it all took it's toll. Not only is she broke and soon to be homeless, but she can't even hear the music anymore. For a former child prodigy, it's painful.

Salvation comes in the unlikely form of one Ethan Gray. Ethan needs her so that he could wreck revenge on his father, who never had the time for his wife and child - instead he lavished attention on his mistress, who just happened to be Noelle's mother. He now has to show his grandfather that he's happily married so that he could get the family business. He didn't count on falling for Noelle.

His first hint that thing would not go as planed was his attraction to Noelle. And when she wore the red dress, well, he was a goner.

Noelle's dress, just picture her with blonde hair:

Or maybe this picture is better, just ignore the pigeons :D :

I liked how we could see Noelle becoming more confident, stronger. Ethan was there when she needed him, he supported her wholeheartedly.

And Ethan, so wary of relationships after watching the train wreck that was his parents' marriage. He did mess up (quite badly as a matter of fact, I wanted a more groveling *sniff*), but eventually they did come together.

Both of them tried hard not to let themselves care, Ethan more so than Noelle, but that's the way it usually goes. But it's hard to keep yourself apart when you're supposed to marry someone. They did everything they could to make the wedding as meaningless as possible, going to Vegas...

Noelle wanted to pick a leopard-print dress as a wedding dress (she didn't manage that, but she did find a skirt)

But even with that their wedding was romantic.

What I didn't quite understand is Ethan's grand plan. I know he wanted to show his father that he was the better man or whatever, but fooling his grandfather that way, it simply didn't sit well with me.

All in all, an OK read, but not my favorite of Ms. Yates.

This was an okay read.I felt that the beginning of the story was a bit choppy and stilted. Can't say that I liked this heroine very much and ditto towards the hero too.The latter part of the book was better and more even. The story begins one year after her mother takes all her money and properties from her, leaving her with an old mansion that was the only thing in her name and no money. The mansion is now in foreclosure and she is being hounded by the banks. The heroine was a child star pianist and her mother was her manager.Enter the hero with a proposition, marry him and the mansion will he hers after a quickie divorce.Of course,he has a hidden agenda. His father was her mother's lover years ago and that relationship ,destroyed his mother who used to be an A list movie star. This could have been a very good read, but some how, this book just did not click for me.

I love the cover of this book and being written by one of my favorite authors, I was really excited.

Noelle, a famous pianist, abandoned by her controlling mother, who has run off with all her money, is left almost destitute and with a “dead” career.
Ethan, trying to get back at his amoral father and sometime lover of Noelle’s mother. He asks Noelle to marry him and he will help her career and money-wise. He will then inherit the family business instead of his father.

I so did not bond with the two mc’s. I thought Noelle very shallow and self-absorbed and Ethan cold and calculating.

I was kind of so-so in the first part of the book but half-way began to like it more.

As these two “lost” souls amble along in reaching their own “quests”, I began to feel a bit sad for them.
Sins of the fathers – as that saying says, children suffer punishment related to the father/mother’s past sins, clearly shows in this story.

Happily for Noelle & Ethan, they discover that you cannot allow the past mistakes by your parents rule your lives.

Nice and interesting storyline and I did enjoy the last chapter in the story.

This is the story of Ethan Grey and Noelle Birch. Both of them are at a cross roads in their lives. Noelle is about to lose the last thing she had left after her career as a child prodigy crashed and burned under the management of her now absent mother.

Ethan is at the point of finally taking revenge on his father for the misery his mother endured when his affair with Noelle's mother hit the headlines. Noelle is the tool he intends to use to exact that revenge and at the same time humiliate his father.

What they don't expect is the connection, even friendship that grows as Ethan's plan of an arranged marriage plays out. There is a roller coaster of emotion for both Ethan and Noelle as they both learn what they need and what's important to them and the cost of ignoring those things in favour of revenge and giving in to fear.

I was interested to read this because the hero is an Aussi from just down the track from where I live. Trying to figure out where the events in Brisbane take place was a bit of a brain twister but the Australian idiom was handled well.

I loved the story. It was standard category romance fare but deftly handled with humour and a nice touch of emotional angst. The ending was very satisfying.

Noelle was a famous child star pianist, who has just abandoned by her mother. Noelle is left homeless and poor longing for money and fame and her glorious past.

Ethan is a tycoon who wants revenge against his father because of the way he treated his wife and son. Ethan is a very damaged brooding hero. All he wants is the unconditional love both his parents denied him. His own mother even tried to commit suicide because according to her having a child, Ethan, is what ruined her life.

Their marriage is one of convenience, it will bring Noelle money and fame and it will give Ethan the company his father wants for himself. But soon Ethan breaks Noelle's icy composure, he shows her how to live life fully and Noelle shows him that revenge is not good enough to heal him. Only love will fill the emptiness he feels and even though Ethan resists he knows that his marriage is the best thing that ever happened to him and his wife the only woman he will ever want.

4.5 stars! I would have given it 5 but I was disappointed we didn't see Ethan with a baby in his arms not even in the epilogue. He was such a great wonderful hero with lots of love to give and I wanted him to have a family of his own. Still a very emotional, touching romance!

The heroine Noelle's life is on hold; her music career appears to be over, her child stardom has faded, her controlling mother has left along with all of Noelle's money, and now she is about to lose her home. She meets the hero Ethan when he comes to look at her house, he asks her to come to his office the nest day and she is shocked when he asks her to marry him. Ethan is looking for revenge on his playboy father wanting to take the family business from him but he can only do it if he is married. And marrying Noelle will be poetic justice considering his father had a very public extra-marital affair with Noelle's mother. Noelle agrees, not really knowing what else to do, and as they begin to make their (pretend) relationship known to society they also get to know one another. One thing Ethan wasn't counting on is Noelle being the complete opposite of what he was expecting, and not only does he want to help the lost, unconfirmed girl that she is, he also fiercely desires her. Noelle knows that whatever she and Ethan have between them, it is only temporary, but she wants to have everything he will give her and hopes that she won't lose her heart in the bargain.

Another really enjoyable book from Maisey Yates. The plot is enjoyable and well executed, and both characters are engaging. I especially liked the way the heroine was 'drawn', her traits that could come across as a little shallow and whiny actually fit what she would be like with her background. As the story progressed the heroine was 'finding herself', and I found that really enjoyable to read. The hero is a good character if a little arrogant, but it works.
My only complaint is that the revenge theme did feel a little flat, and I didn't like the fact that the heroine was being punished for things she had no control over. However the hero makes up for it with a nice bit of grovelling.

Overall, this is a solid and pleasing read.

This was another one of those stories based on revenge. I can't say that I was totally into it. Yes it happened and taught you a valuable lesson or at least it did the characters but realistically it did nothing for the readers. I found it kind of sad and haunting and not in a good way unfortunately. I don't know what has happened with these type of books recently, normally I can't give enough praise but FEB/MAR editions have been severely lacking.. anyone else notice this?

I'd just finished reading all 6 books in the Copper Ridge Desire series and then this one popped up and I thought - how fantastic! A Mills and Boon Modern Maisey Yates, that I haven't yet read. Oh, Joy!

This one was strange. Maisey is a master (or mistress) of writing fabulous characters, building red hot sexual tension, and producing sparkling great dialogue. Most of all, I think I love her stories because they have an actual heart in them. Sadly, I struggled to engage with either of the characters for most of the book. Great premise, fabulous settings, but somehow it never came to life.

I could see what MY was trying to do with the character of Noelle, but I just found her a wishy-washy, entitled pain in the backside for the first half of the book. Yes, she'd been treated abysmally by her mother and emerged with nothing after a successful career, but she seemed unable to do anything about it. Her need for the adulation of the public was an interesting theme, but it made her a rather unsympathetic character.

Ethan was pretty okay, but I struggled to see any actual connection between him and Noelle most of the time. His behaviour towards her in Las Vegas was simply atrocious and there was definitely insufficient grovelling from him. This was an enjoyable read but it doesn't rank up there with her best like Bound to the Warrior King, The Highest Price to Pay and His Ring is not Enough, for example.

This book was terrible and I come away from having read it wanting to shove said girl (who is a grown assed woman who only acts like a child) off said pedestal.

She was a real nightmare who is useless. She literally cannot do ANYTHING other than play the piano (and make coffee at the end) she expects everything to be done for her and thinks luxury is her god given right and she keeps this attitude up for more or less the entire book. The only change being rather than expecting lattes to be served to her shes soooooo independent she can make her own!

God she was annoying. She played the poor iccle me card, mummy has run off with all my $$$ and I'm so helpless at literally everything except pianos that my world has to fall in around me and I can't afford a latte! She expects everything to be handed to her on a silver platter and loves attention, she in fact has many many OW skills and I didn't like her even at the end.

The H came across as much more sensible yet assholy for the very first part of the book then he played the poor little ignored rich boy card for his crappy revenge on his daddy. When he said he had a major in bedroom skills I thought I was going to throw up in my own mouth or launch my e-reader out the window.

In the end these 2 actually deserved each other because they were both as shallow as a puddle and equally vain.

So this was alright but they waited too long to get married and not enough involvement for his family and her mother. That all needed to be confronted but it never came to pass. If it had it would have gotten more stars. I really liked the heroine, and if the book was longer I would have liked her to have a longer period away from the hero to work out her own life. But nothing happens to the villains and it’s a let down. I’d still recommend it to be read though.

A good sham marriage/marriage of convenience romance with an unusual heroine and a flawed and damaged hero.

The hero, Ethan, is a very damaged man. His supposed motive in the story is revenge - which is never an honourable motive for a hero. But looking deeper I think he's really trying to prove himself worthy of the love his mother never gave him. When he gets his revenge it doesn't satisfy because deep down that's never what it was really about. This gave me more sympathy for him basically exploiting the heroine's highly vulnerable state at the start of the story.

The heroine, Noelle, is a former child prodigy pianist, long exploited for her financial value and betrayed by her mother once she was no longer an asset. Both hero and heroine have disastrous relationships with their parents and it's only once they find each other that they have someone to love and be loved by in return and who they can trust. This makes for a very intense relationship between, as they are all each other has now.

A very sexy romance with good character development. There's no easy fix for the characters once they are together, but a feel that they both finally have someone they can rely on not to betray them and who will give them the support and love they've been deprived of for so long.

Nothing special about the plot, it's one of those books about revenge, but it's well executed & brilliantly written.

h/H are very likeable & you have no problem identifying w/ them, both h/H POV help a lot to show their inner thoughts, their deepest feelings & their vulnerability.

I really like MY writing style, the word that springs to my mind, every time I read one of her books, is "elegant" . MY has a very particular way w/ words. Her writing is sooo elegant, it has the power to elevate an ordinary storyline into a great read.

A Nice quick read.
Noelle was a child star pianist, who has just been betrayed by her mother. Her mother stole all her money and basically left her for dead.
Ethan is a millionares son, who wants revenge against his father because of the pain he put on him and his mother with his playboy nature.
Their marriage is one of convenience, but it begins a powerful that "Lasts Forever".

I really enjoyed this! In my opinion, Maisey never fails to deliver a touching, sexy romance and she definitely upped the sexy in this one :D The only reason I haven't given it five stars is because Highest Price To Pay is still my favourite so far!

This story had a great deal of flaws, mostly on the part of both the hero's and heroine's motives and intentions, but I don't know, it still clicked with me. The tension is drawn out well, and I'm just a sucker for that chemistry.
